He didn't just play against RHP though did he? And you'd be kidding yourself if you thought that he'd only be hitting against RHP as a Cub. Strict platoons simply do not happen. He had an 88 OPS+ last year, the third straight year of significant declines in that area. That's bad.

I have every reason to believe it'd be a strict platoon, the Cubs love Reed Johnson, and it'd be the majority portion of the platoon.

Reed Johnson 2007: .236 .305 .320

Reed Johnson 2007 vs. righties: .202 .275 .237

Jim Edmonds still has value to a team trotting Reed Johnson out as their CFer vs. righties.

Cesar Izturis had value to the team that was trotting Neifi Perez out there every day.

Fukudome will need days off, Soriano will need days off. Edmonds will face relievers.

There's no such thing as a strict platoon.

His 2007 was horrible because he put up the numbers he put up while playing in 2007, not just a select group of those numbers.

Should we really think that this would be a platoon situation? I'd think Edmonds would play every day.

Different level of suck.

There's no chance he'd play everyday. It will be a platoon, but he will still face a fair amount of lefties, and he will stick suck.

Yucky...This looks close to being done by tomorrow...

From CBSsportsline fantasy reports:

edit: This was a report already stated a few pages back about how Edmonds told his agent to contact the Cubs first.

Seriously? Am I the only one noticing these things, or is it that I'm just a 12 year old boy at heart?

I didn't read the entire thread but I don't get how some of you can accept this guy with open arms. I hated this guy for years. With his dive to get gold gloves and his constant crying. It's not like he is even close to the prime of his career. Please don't let this happen. There are certain players that should never be a Cub and he is one of them.

You and I have very different thresholds for "horrible." The man posted a .261 EqA last season, where .260 is the definition of league average.

Expanded Rob Neyer comments that essentially sum up the current thoughts...

Question: If there's a decent chance that Edmonds can still hit, wouldn't the Padres have kept him for a while longer? After all, they are last in the major leagues in scoring. Behind even the Giants.

Of course it's possible that the Padres made a mistake when they let Edmonds go. Every team makes personnel mistakes. Even the smartest of them. And while Edmonds probably isn't much good any more, he's probably better than his numbers with the Padres this season (.178/.265/.233). The Cubs need a platoon partner for Reed Johnson, so why not take a flyer?

Here's why: Because the Cubs already have a left-handed bat who's probably better than his numbers this season. Felix Pie is struggling, too, but he does have the virtue of being 15 years younger than Edmonds. He's started only 15 games this season, and has played only 11 games from the first pitch to the last. It's on this evidence, apparently, that the Cubs are ready to give up on a 23-year-old center fielder who batted .362 in Triple-A last season.

This just doesn't make sense, at least not from 2,000 miles away (where I sit). Maybe there's something about Pie that I don't know. Maybe he's not willing to work on his hitting. Maybe he's taken to wearing women's underpants in the clubhouse and his teammates have the heebie-jeebies. But from where I sit, it's foolish to replace a young player who isn't hitting with an old player who probably can't hit.

Where has anybody in this thread welcomed him with open arms?

Some people are waving their torches and pitchforks; some are looking for a silver lining. I haven't seen anybody saying "this is awesome!"

Does anyone here practice Voo Doo? Anyone?

Please make a doll of Corey and every other Red that can play CF and poke them in the knees with a needle. You know Dusty would be foaming at the mouth to get Edmonds if he had a need.

"Dude knows how to win, dude..."

Far more torches and pitchforks than silver lining.

I now hate the Padres for releasing him and putting us in this situation. I hate them right behind the Cardinals and before the Yankees.

Nobody is welcoming Edmonds with "open arms", it's the simply inevitable that Hendry will sign Edmonds. 99.999999999999999999999 to inifnity% of the Cubs fans would prefer to keep Pie up and not sign Edmonds. But Hendry/Piniella has a man-crush on Edmonds....

Actually, on the Tribune poll a full 39.6% endorse the move.

Sheesh. I knew there were a lot of dumb people, but that seems way too high.

I'm usually not one for conspiracy theories, but... I don't know if I can believe that. 2 out of 5 Cubs fans are for signing him? There's just no way. I would think that the only people who take the time to read the Chicago Tribune's Cubs section are the knowledgeable fans, not the bandwagon types who think the name is a good signing. Even still, I wouldn't think the casual Cubs fans would want a former Cardinal who's far past his prime to be signed.

I call BS on that poll.

You'd be shocked at how many Cubs fans are convinced Pie can't play in the bigs.

This just made me spit Gatorade all over my keyboard. The bill will arrive shortly.
