Petersen not interested in UCLA job.Sorry Raisin. Better cross him off the list.

During the press conference, Dan Guerrero said that he - nor anyone officially representing UCLA - has contacted any potential candidate. Turns out the LA Times was speculating when they said that members of UCLA have contacted Petersen, Mooch and Leach.

We'll see what Petersen says when UCLA actually comes a knocking. I don't have delusions of grandeur but there is no doubt in my mind that UCLA football - much like USC basketball - can be a perennial top-10 team given the resources and location.

Finally, this is from ESPN the day Steve Lavin was fired - I can only hope this ends the same way the Lavin firing/Howland hiring turned out:

Pittsburgh coach Ben Howland doesn't appear interested in succeeding Steve Lavin as UCLA coach.

"I'm really, really happy here," Howland said Monday on the Mike and Mike Show on ESPN Radio, responding to various reports that name him as a potential candidate to coach the Bruins.

"I'm not planning on going anywhere. I have such a good situation here," Howland said, citing a strong incoming freshman class, a contract extension he recently signed, and Pitt's facilities.

So you have a lying basketball coach with no integrity then?

After Bill Frieder left the basketball team to coach Arizona Bo had a hastily called press conference announcing that "a Michigan Man" will be coaching the basketball team in the NCAA playoffs. He said it with spittle flying from his mouth and hand pounding on a desk. They all applauded.
Minor detail, but it was actually Arizona State, not Arizona. And the "Michigan Man" (Steve Fischer) then led the team to the national championship after they underachieved in the regular season under Frieder. I believe Fischer is the only coach ever to win a national championship before winning a regular season game.

I heard that Bowden from Clemson is going to be the next Hog coach? Is this true, did anyone else hear this?

That's the rumor. If so, I'm assuming Bowden is leaving Clemson because (1) he's feeling the heat in Clemson and (2) Arkansas is paying him a lot. It's much, much easier to win at Clemson than Arkansas; Bowden would be downgrading jobs.

IMO he's the same kind of coach Nutt was. A 9-3 good year 5-7 bad year type of guy. I don't see the attraction to him.

AP[/url]"]CLEMSON, S.C. -- Clemson coach Tommy Bowden agreed to a contract extension Tuesday amid reports he was talking with Arkansas about its coaching vacancy.

"I'm very pleased with the contract extension agreement that we reached," Bowden said in a university release.

.........................

Bowden received an extension through 2010. It did not include a raise, but hefty penalties if Bowden or the school wanted to end the relationship.

This season, it would cost Clemson $2.5 million if it chose to fire Bowden. The coach would have to pay just as much if he left for another school.

Jeepers...every coach is using another school to get an extension and more cash.

I am sure back in the 70s when the NFL jobs were being offered to Paterno, he never got a raise to stay at PSU.

Ball State head coach Brady Hoke leads race for Michigan HC job.

I'm flying back to Ann Arbor and burning down the Big House if this happens. From all the rumors that I've read, Michigan is basically looking for a "Michigan man" who's looking for "what Michigan brings" than lots of money. They're basically going to be cheap skates even though they have more money than they know what to do with.

That's how UCLA ended up with Karl Dorrell.

Wow. I think I would just go with Ron English, if this is what they were going to do.

Brady Hoke would be a pretty terrible hire. I can't decide if I'm in favor or against that.

If you say you're in favor I WILL HUNT YOU DOWN. Just like I'd hunt down Lloyd Carr because a move like that reeks of him having a hand in the hiring.

Arkansas has sent out 118 applications for their coaching vacancy (sorry, Houston Nutt didn't get one). The first person to send in a completed application gets the job.

YES!

I like Hoke. I haven't actually talked to him, but I've attended his postgame press conferences a few times. He's a good guy. He's definitely not ready for the UM job. Although it would get harder to hate them with a BSU guy in charge.

Former U-M Players Frustrated

LSU coach Les Miles is off Michigan athletic director Bill Martin's radar, but that does not mean supporters of Miles have backed off.

Miles was considered by many sources close to the search to be the leading candidate to replace Lloyd Carr, who retired Nov. 19 after 13 seasons as Michigan head coach.

Apparently, the large community of former Michigan players wants Martin to know how they feel about Miles. A source indicated Tuesday nearly 500 e-mails have been sent from former players and alums to Martin and Michigan president Mary Sue Coleman, pledging support for Miles.

Several online fan petitions also have surfaced for those who wish to express their backing of Miles to Michigan.

"It's a very frustrating time for everybody and especially for us, all of us who have supported (Miles) and all of us who have a keen interest in this program," former U-M offensive lineman Dick Caldarazzo (1968-1969), who sent an e-mail to Martin, said Tuesday. "Can someone tell me a better candidate?

"We all have a fire in our bellies about this -- we're upset. I don't want this to go down without ramifications. People have to stand up and answer why it went down like this."

Caldarazzo said he also sent letters to Martin and Coleman via fax.

"As for Michigan, we are continuing with the process we established and will continue to talk with and research our list of candidates," Martin said.

But many players believe the research ended with Miles.

"It's greatly disappointing that coach Miles can't come back to Michigan considering that's what he wanted to do," said former offensive lineman Doug Skene (1989-1992), who also e-mailed Martin and Coleman. "For whatever reason, whoever is in charge of getting this done, didn't get it done."

This UM coaching search has disaster written all over it. There are also reports in various newspapers saying that Miles' agent reached out to Martin (UM's AD) on Friday because LSU offered him a contract, but Miles wanted to know if Michigan was interested. Martin couldn't be found though and didn't answer his cellphone when Miles' agent called because Martin was down in Florida on his yacht partaking in an event at the Ocean Reef club in Key Largo.

If I were a guy interested in the job and after hearing that, I'd be turned off. You know that X amount of boosters are going to hate the new guy right away and not give him a chance and the only way a new coach can prove himself is to go 11-1 or 12-0 and the pressure has been raised way too high now. Imo...you HAVE to go after Miles and go after him hard before he signs that new deal. Or...think outside of the box and go after Cowher (sp old Steeler coach)

EJ, Ive heard Ferentz is back at top of MIchigans wishlist.

Yeah, I've been reading that as well. I just don't see that happening. I can't see him leaving Iowa. I also don't know how I would feel about that. He turned around an Iowa program a couple years ago, but his teams have been down the past couple of years and he can't even beat Iowa freaking State.

Decent point. Michigan is a selector when it comes to recruiting though and that may make a big difference. I don't think Fernetz has the talent at Iowa like you guys do and he does a lot with what he has. I'm sure the Iowa fans would know more about his X's and O's but I think he'd be able to recruit very well for you. Does Michigan want a 3 yards and a cloud of dust guy or are they willing to except a different philosophy?

That's what I don't think anyone but the higher ups at Michigan knows. It's always been about tradition, but the run-left crap hasn't worked for them for a while now. They need a new philosophy or they're going to get left behind and end up like Notre Dame and Nebraska. That's why this hire is a huge deal. I don't think Michigan needs to hire the big name like Ferentz. They just have to think outside the box and look at guys like Petersen from Boise State or Kelly from Cincinnati, or even Martin from GVSU.
