Syracuse just hired Mitch Browning an ex-Gopher OC to coach our Offense after firing another ex-Big 10 flunky Brian White. Does anyone have any info on this guy?

Minnesota's offense is not their problem. Ive respected their offense, its not to pass happy or run happy. They've had years where they just light people up on offense.

Bah. Well, it looks like everything points to Bates taking over as defensive coordinator if Colby is indeed gone. Bates is somewhat of an expert on the 3-4 defense and Colby was probably the only factor preventing Fitz from implementing the 3-4, as Colby had no experience with it.

Either way, this sure takes the sting out of losing Murphy.

Whats the latest on this?

A 3-4 defense could be really interesting. How many teams in the B10 play this defense let alone all of college football? This could make NU very unique in a good way.

It'll probably take a little while before a defensive coordinator is named. We'll see, though. But they've been recruiting for a 3-4 defense for over 2 years now. They figured that it would be the best choice since they just can't recruit the good DEs. Ours just don't have the speed to put any pressure on the QB. And while we may not have a great 3-4 NT, I think the bulk up front should be sufficient. Plus, we can move some defensive linemen over to the offensive line, which is definitely a need. With Brendan Smith finally back next season, the safeties should be good and provide decent run support.

But they've really be recruiting LBers the last couple of years, so it'll be interesting to see if the switch happens this year. The time seems about right, but the DC position is still up in the air and very much tied into that.

Either way, it's not going to have the same kind of effect that the Northwestern spread had, but who knows. There will be some teams that might be better off with a 3-4 because of the same recruiting problems on the defensive line.

That's what I thought and it sounds good...thank you. I wasn't too happy with White but I have a feeling Robinson put him in a no win situation.

Apparently June Jones is interested in the UCLA job.

If he has a good DC and recruits well his style of offense would really play well in the Pac 10.

The rumor (via TSN) is that UCLA will talk with dew's Norm Chow on Monday, Texas Tech's Mike Leach on Tuesday and Steve Mariucci on Wed (ughhh). The Bruins appear very interested in June Jones.

Duke wants to interview Karl Dorrell. Heh.

Bobby Bowden to step down after next season.

Florida State offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher will reportedly be officially named the successor to Bobby Bowden Monday.

Fisher, 42, joined the Seminoles staff as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach after last season, replacing Bowden's son Jeff, who resigned his post. He came to Florida State after seven seasons running the offense for the LSU Tigers.

The Seminoles web site and numerous sources reported last week that Fisher's job had been mentioned for the opening at Arkansas, possibly prompting Florida State to officially declare it's future plans for the coach.

Bowden, 78, reportedly will coach one more season before Fisher takes over.

There's also quite a few rumors floating (mgoblog is one) around that Michigan and Les Miles are still talking and that Michigan has put in a solid offer for the LSU coach.

Wow...I take it he hasn't signed on the dotted line yet?

I hope JoePa lasts 2 more years so he can have the record. I hate that old criminal loving hick.

He's signed on the dotted line, but it's basically the same contract he had before with a few years added on. He still has the buyout if he goes to Michigan.

Louisiana State coach Les Miles appears to be a Michigan coaching candidate again.

Miles had a phone conversation Friday morning with Michigan athletic director Bill Martin and school president Mary Sue Coleman, according to several people with knowledge of the call.

Michigan received permission Nov. 28 from LSU athletic director Skip Bertman to speak with Miles, as long as it was after the Dec. 1 SEC championship game. So asking LSU again for permission was not an issue; U-M is believed to have initiated Friday’s call.

LSU athletic director Skip Bertman said Monday night he didn’t know if Miles had had contact with Michigan. But he said he doubted anyone could sway Miles to leave LSU.

“He and Bo Schembechler were real close,” Bertman said. “If Bo Schembechler were alive I doubt he could have got him to go to Michigan. It’s hard for people who don’t live in the South to understand.”

Miles played and coached under Schembechler at Michigan.

While the call between the two sides did not identify Miles as the leading candidate for the coaching vacancy, it did give them a chance to interact formally for the first time and to discuss a number of issues previously handled through intermediaries.

“We’re not going to be discussing anything about recruiting (a new coach) until after the announcement is made,” Coleman’s spokesperson, Kelly Cunningham, said today.

Martin’s representative, associate athletic director Bruce Madej, said U-M is not commenting on the search.

Miles’ agent, George Bass also said he had no comment.

Nothing about the article you linked to suggests that he's stepping down after next season. It said he can continue coaching as long as he wants, then he will be replaced by Fisher. That's consistent with what was reported on my news tonight. He's signing a one-year contract extension with options beyond that for him to continue coaching as long as he wants.

Hmm. I'm torn on this one. On one hand, Chow deserves a shot at a head coaching job, but on the other I have no desire to see him leave the Titans. Selfishly, I hope he sticks around and continues to develop Vince, but if he gets the UCLA job, good for him. It's got too much potential to pass up.

Perhaps the reporter writing the article originally misinterpreted the statements and they were clarified later.

You keep him, I'll take Petersen (pipe dream?) or Mendenhall. We can all be happy.

Here's an article that discusses who might replace Pelini as DC at LSU.

This looms as the first major task for Miles after the national championship game.

If the Tigers claim the national crown, hiring a new defensive coordinator could be the bridge to a modern-day SEC dynasty.

The money will be there: Pelini was in the $400,000 a year neighborhood and LSU is poised to up the ante if necessary.

The prestige is already there and would be even glossier with a national championship in hand.

LSU and Miles have to aim high and lure the best fit for the SEC’s best defense of today and the future.Tenuta’s name has been tossed around as a favorite and the Tigers could do a lot worse than the veteran of the ACC and short stints at Ohio State, North Carolina, Kansas State and Oklahoma.

But the best fits for all of the above reasons are the three most familiar with LSU: Mallory, Muschamp and Dunbar.

Look for all three to be in the hunt for the job and one to get the gig.
