EJ, Ive heard Ferentz is back at top of MIchigans wishlist.

Yeah, I've been reading that as well. I just don't see that happening. I can't see him leaving Iowa. I also don't know how I would feel about that. He turned around an Iowa program a couple years ago, but his teams have been down the past couple of years and he can't even beat Iowa freaking State.

Decent point. Michigan is a selector when it comes to recruiting though and that may make a big difference. I don't think Fernetz has the talent at Iowa like you guys do and he does a lot with what he has. I'm sure the Iowa fans would know more about his X's and O's but I think he'd be able to recruit very well for you. Does Michigan want a 3 yards and a cloud of dust guy or are they willing to except a different philosophy?

That's what I don't think anyone but the higher ups at Michigan knows. It's always been about tradition, but the run-left crap hasn't worked for them for a while now. They need a new philosophy or they're going to get left behind and end up like Notre Dame and Nebraska. That's why this hire is a huge deal. I don't think Michigan needs to hire the big name like Ferentz. They just have to think outside the box and look at guys like Petersen from Boise State or Kelly from Cincinnati, or even Martin from GVSU.

What did Peterson do before Boise? I just wonder if he's not successful because of Haskins before him or was that his philosophy that made them better?

I've read nothing but good things about Petersen. He's supposed to be good with the X's and O's, and he's a "blue-collar" coach who gets his players to play hard. That's pretty much the exact opposite of Carr. I don't know about his recruiting skills though.

Wait, they need a new philosophy or they're going to end up like Nebraska? Oh, the irony.

i think Pelini will be a good choice for Nebraska. I guess we'll have to wait and see how it turns out.

It looks like Jimbo Fisher has been promised the Florida State job whenever Bowden decides to retire.

Link.

The school will announce that Fisher has agreed to a three-year deal that will pay just under $1 million per year. When Bowden retires, the school has told Fisher he will succeed the legendary coach.

If for any reason Fisher is not named coach at that time, the school would pay Fisher a multimillion dollar buyout.

Before head coaching, he was the OC at Boise State.

Do you think it was him or Haskins that made that team better? Haskins hasn't done too well at Colorado.

It's Hawkins, not Haskins. And I'm not sure you can say he hasn't done well. Overall, his record is garbage, but they went from 2-10 (2-6) to 6-6 (4-4). The program was decimated with allegations of practically everything. I know there have been some time-management issues, and I'm not close to the situation, but it seems he inherited a mess.

It's way to early to judge Hawkins at Colorado, imo.

Yep. Got to give him at least 2 more years before evaluating his performance.

The thing is I haven't seen anyone mentioned this week that has a resume which compares with three straight #8 finishes and two shares of the Big Ten title at Iowa. The last 2.5 years have certainly changed things drastically though.

I'm not quite sure what he would do at Michigan. I can see him being a lot like Carr but if he were to develop the culture he had at Iowa with the talent he could bring at Michigan, he could be Tressel-like.

The last sentence is something I think would really be a strike against him for Michigan. I'm sure they all want something like Tressel coming in and immediately talking about the Michigan game and what his team would do. That's not Kirk. He doesn't treat rivalry games different than others. McCarney did and his teams always played with more fire in that game and often played their best game of the year.

With all that said, I think he would listen if they offered but ultimately would turn it down.

Raisin, I heard on the radio earlier today that there were reports UCLA is interested in Norm Chow for head coach.

Have you heard anything at all on this? Mike Keith, the Titans play-by-play guy, confirmed he had heard they were interested in Chow but didn't know how seriously.

I'd hate to lose Chow since he's been working so closely with Vince the past couple of years. But I think he'd make a very good head coach for the Bruins.

Grobe to Arkansas. . . . well, that is if WF doesn't up his pay ;)

Sounds like it's a done deal. You guys got a good coach there. Although he's no spring chicken, I wouldn't have minded seeing him get a chance at the Michigan job.

UCLA is in the process of hiring an independent search firm that will help evaluate potential hires (and do nitty gritty stuff like background checks). Until this search group is hired, any coaching candidate mentioned is more speculation than reality. Norm Chow has certainly been mentioned by LA media (along with a host of others) . The only person who will get an interview for sure is DeWayne Walker.

BTW, Chris Petersen was in West LA yesterday - about 2 miles from UCLA - on a recruiting trip and once again vehemently denied his intered in the UCLA job.

I love the hire. The first 2 years will be tough, as Nutt left the cupboard bare.

I don't think it's fair to say he left the cupboard bare, but they're going to be losing a LOT of weapons. I'm wondering what kind of staff is coming. Reggie Herring is almost certainly gone, which makes me sad. Other than that, the other coaches I cared about left with Nutt for Ole Miss.

Losing McFadden and Jones almost certainly, Monk, and then Hillis will hurt a lot. But a strong offensive line and some speed and talent in youngsters like Crosby Tuck, Ben Cleveland, and Michael Smith make me feel like the offense will be okay. I'm much more worried about the defense going forward immediately. The entire starting secondary is gone. Weston Dacus is gone. Marcus Harrison is gone. Here's hoping they get some good players in there quick.

I think there's enough talent in the freshmen and sophomores to keep the down year to about a season, but Grobe's recruiting will definitely be tested. I wonder where his influence lies most.

Interesting.

How do you feel about Chow as a potential head coach? I figure you watched him some while he was at USC. I'd think he would be able to recruit very well in the area, having done it for so long with the Trojans.

I think he deserves a head coaching shot, but I'd really hate to lose him as offensive coordinator.

No talk about the Duke coach?
Paul Johnson of Navy seems to be their top choice, but he's also interviewed for other jobs (Georgia Tech, for one). Rod Broadway of Grambling has also interviewed.

I'm in two minds about him. Quite frankly, I want someone with head coaching experience which Chow obviously lacks. There are also questions about his ability to recruit. While Chow was at USC, apparently Sarkasian and Kiffin did most of the offensive recruiting. On the flip side, the guy is obviously an offensive genius and has done wonders for many a QB. And I think he's definitely interested in the job.
