Nebraska has called a 4 PM press conference and is believed to name Bo Pelini as their head coach.

Link.

Meanwhile, Nebraska has called a news conference for 4 p.m. in Lincoln, Neb., to announce its new head football coach. The Lincoln Journal Star reported on its Web site that, as expected, LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini will be named the Cornhuskers’ new coach.

Pelini, who has been LSU’s defensive coordinator since 2005, served as defensive coordinator at Nebraska in 2003 and was the Cornhuskers interim head coach for that year’s Alamo Bowl after the school fired then head coach Frank Solich.

Pelini told LSU players after the game Saturday that he was leaning toward becoming Nebraska’s coach. Tigers linebacker Darry Beckwith said Pelini told them coaching at Nebraska was his dream job.

An explanation why Miles' deal with Michigan fell through.

Friday, LSU preemptively offered Miles more years and more money than he would get from Michigan.

Now Miles was stuck. He wanted to coach LSU to the SEC title, officially interview with Martin and accept the Michigan job. As he said Friday, "We will get beyond this game, and we will see what happens."

LSU would not let him get beyond that game.

From all indications, Miles was willing to take less money from Michigan. He was fine with a shorter contract. He would have liked a larger pool of cash to hire assistants, but I don't think that would have scuttled the deal, either.

He just needed to know the Michigan job was his. And Michigan couldn't make that promise.

Can't say I'm that upset about missing out on Miles. He's a good coach, but it's not like he's an elite coach. Some of his decision-making leaves a lot to be desired. I just hope Martin and company decide to hire the best guy for the job, and not just some "Michigan Man" who has a history with the school. Still would like to see Brian Kelly, but it doesn't sound like he's going to get a chance at the job.

You've probably described Miles accurately. He's a pretty good recruiter. He's not a bad coach, but he makes some dumb moves as well. I'm glad we kept him for the stability, but it's not like he's irreplaceable.

I like Miles for his 'freshness' he would of brought the program offensively and defensively. I could of lived with his crazy game strategies. I like Kelly too. I hear conflicting reports that he's not a candidate and some others say he is. Terry Foster of the Detroit News says he is as of late last night, in fact his sources are telling him Kelly is the next in line.....But we all know how good sources are now.

Yeah, I read his blog saying "Kelly was the next in line." I would absolutely love that, but I just don't see Martin bringing in a guy like Kelly.

You guys went through the exact same thing we did with Coach P...well P won more but he peeked early and was doing the win enough but not nearly enough thing while losing recruits to other schools. Make sure you pick a coach that isn't overwhelmed and has a good solid plan, plus, is familiar with the area and can recruit there.

One sports columnist in Detroit isn't too enamored with Miles.

If he'd been coaching Michigan and saying that they'd all be cheering in Motown.

After Bill Frieder left the basketball team to coach Arizona Bo had a hastily called press conference announcing that "a Michigan Man" will be coaching the basketball team in the NCAA playoffs. He said it with spittle flying from his mouth and hand pounding on a desk. They all applauded.

People around here are saying Arkansas will announce a hire today. Word is that it's Butch Davis or Ron English.

Your Hogs do know that the English play soccer and call it football, yes?

For Andy...

At least two schools from BCS conferences -- including Michigan -- have shown preliminary interest in Ball State football coach Brady Hoke about their head coaching jobs. Hoke confirmed to The (Muncie, Ind.) Star Press during the weekend that his name has been advanced about coaching vacancies at the University of Michigan and Washington State University.

Hot damn. Word is that Greg Colby, our defensive coordinator, has FINALLY been let go. I'd love to see them go get someone from outside the program, but Randy Bates, 2nd year LBers coach and former defensive coordinator of Louisiana Tech, may get the promotion. He was brought it when Fitzgerald was made head coach. Of course, if they do plan on switching to the 3-4 next season, that'll definitely have an impact on filling the position.

Now all we need is to get Jerry Brown out of there and bring in a defensive backs coach who can teach something other than nothing but face guarding.

In related news, Mark Murphy is expected to be announced as the new CEO of the Packers this afternoon. Our search for our new AD has begun.

ESPNnews has it official now.

And today was his last day, according to the AP.

I guess this means that Raisin won't have to cheer against them for the Las Vegas bowl.

I was just coming here to post that.

He won't get the WSU job - Bill Doba, their former coach and a Ball State grad, recommended him but he hasn't actually been contacted.

I don't think he'll get the UM job either - he still has a losing career record at Ball State and only went 7-5 this year, probably coaching us out of a win against Miami that cost us a shot at the MAC title. He's a fantastic recruiter, though (got the Gatorade HS Player of the Year from Indiana at QB for next year), and I have no doubt within the next 5 years he'll find himself at a bigger job. Just not this year.

Bah. Well, it looks like everything points to Bates taking over as defensive coordinator if Colby is indeed gone. Bates is somewhat of an expert on the 3-4 defense and Colby was probably the only factor preventing Fitz from implementing the 3-4, as Colby had no experience with it.

Either way, this sure takes the sting out of losing Murphy.

Karl Dorrell has the decision to coach if he wants. If he declines, DeWayne Walker will be coaching so I might still be conflicted. :| I DO NOT want Walker as the next coach. I bet the Las Vegas Bowl hates us - 2 out of the last 3 visits have been with an interim coach after firings. LA Times continues to say Chris Petersen is AD Dan Guerrero's #1 target. :D

After a paragraph gushing about UCLA's greatness in athletics and another paragraph noting that UCLA can and should easily be as good as USC in football, Coaches Hot Seat Blog gave the 5 guys they'd contact for head coaching vacancy if they were UCLA's athletic director:

The 5 Coaches we would Call if we were the AD at UCLA. (The coaches are listed alphabetically by first name):

UCLA

Brian Kelly - Cincinnati head coach

Bronco Mendenhall - BYU head coach

Chris Peterson - Boise State head coach

Mike Leach - Texas Tech head coach

Rich Rodriguez - West Virginia head coach

UCLA needs a great or very good coach to stand on the sidelines at the Rose Bowl and any of the above 5 men would fit that bill. Also, all 5 of the above men would send shockwaves through Heritage Hall at USC. There have been a few other coaches mentioned in press reports out of Los Angeles that would cause lots of belly laughs at USC, and would lead from our point of view to continued malaise in the UCLA football program. UCLA should keep in mind the words of the great Vince Lombardi when hiring their next head coach, "Coaches who can outline plays on a black board are a dime a dozen. The ones who win get inside their player and motivate."

Kelly isn't leaving the Midwest and Rodriguez is a pipe dream but Petersen and Mendenhall are amongst my top 3 and Leach is probably #4.

Petersen not interested in UCLA job.

Boise State football coach Chris Petersen said Monday he is not interested in going to UCLA.

He also disputed a report in Monday’s Los Angeles Times saying that the Bruins had contacted Petersen about their job, which became open when the school fired Karl Dorrell on Monday. The newspaper also indicated that Petersen was the Bruins’ top choice.

“I’m not interested in that place,” Petersen said. “… I’ve talked to nobody through the grapevine, (or) this guy talked to that guy. It’s totally not true.”

One school has contacted Petersen about a job opportunity, he said. He would not name the school.

Sorry Raisin. Better cross him off the list.

Michigan got permission from USC to talk to their OC, Steve Sarkisian today.

I highly doubt that he'd leave USC in the first place, and I really doubt Michigan would hire a guy with no head-coaching experience and limited coordinator experience. He has worked in the NFL and was the QB coach at USC during the Palmer, Leinert, and Booty years.

Still, highly doubtful though.

During the press conference, Dan Guerrero said that he - nor anyone officially representing UCLA - has contacted any potential candidate. Turns out the LA Times was speculating when they said that members of UCLA have contacted Petersen, Mooch and Leach.

We'll see what Petersen says when UCLA actually comes a knocking. I don't have delusions of grandeur but there is no doubt in my mind that UCLA football - much like USC basketball - can be a perennial top-10 team given the resources and location.

Finally, this is from ESPN the day Steve Lavin was fired - I can only hope this ends the same way the Lavin firing/Howland hiring turned out:

Pittsburgh coach Ben Howland doesn't appear interested in succeeding Steve Lavin as UCLA coach.

"I'm really, really happy here," Howland said Monday on the Mike and Mike Show on ESPN Radio, responding to various reports that name him as a potential candidate to coach the Bruins.

"I'm not planning on going anywhere. I have such a good situation here," Howland said, citing a strong incoming freshman class, a contract extension he recently signed, and Pitt's facilities.

Granted he followed Norm Chow but I'm not a big fan of his. Michigan can do much better.

I'm not sure there are any even semi-realistic coaches who would necessarily "send shockwaves through Heritage Hall at USC" if they were hired to coach the UCLA football team.
