David Cutcliffe is now officially the head coach at Duke. Congrats chucky on getting a terrific head coach - I expect Duke to get pretty good in the next few years.

http://utsports.com/football/article.aspx?id=46386

Apparently, from what I'm hearing the offensive coordinator options for UT have been narrowed to Greg Adkins (current O-line coach), Trooper Taylor (current wide receiver coach), Kippy Brown (former UT guy and current Lions WR coach) and Doug Marrone (another former UT guy and current Saints offensive coordinator).

Right now, I think I'd prefer either Trooper or Kippy (though Trooper is rumored for the Baylor O-coordinator position).

OleMiss, do you know how much of the offense has been Marrone the past couple years and how much has been Payton?

I'd be elated if this happens. I long for the days when Baylor returns to being a decent football program. I'm not sure about his actual abilities as an OC, but he definitely brings an energy to a team. He's definitely worked his way up through the ranks and deserves a chance to show what he can do. I remember when he was a graduate assistant in charge of getting the tapes together. He's come along way baby!

I'm not sure how Trooper would do as an OC either, but I do know that when he took over the running backs, they got instantly much better. The next year he took over the receivers and they got much better.

He's a terrific coach and an even better recruiter, the only questions I have are about his ability to manage all facets of an offense and his game-planning ability. I would think he'd at least be decent at those, though.

I have to say, I'm on top of the world right now. I never thought we'd have a chance to get Rich Rodriguez. It was a long and horrible process, but it sure turned out good in the end. :D

as an alumnus, i'm totally excited with this seemingly last-minute turn-of-events. all the rumors about brady hoke made me want to burn my diploma. the fact that he's bringing gibson (db coach) and magee (oc) might mean debord's gone. excellent.

DeBord was on his way out anyway. Run left hasn't worked for years. I'm also excited about Rich Rod bringing our strength and conditioning program into the 21st century as well. I do hope they keep Ron English on as DC.

I wasnt so sure about what would happen with Debord. His status caused a lot of consternation after reading all the rumors of what was going on in this process behind the scenes. I was never so sure until RR was hired. The new guard at AA won on this one.

As for Mallett ill be surprised if he transfers. He burnt his redshirt and transfering would cost him another year. Plus after listening the RR's presser this morning there were at least 3 questions about his offense and how it will fit in. He said that his spread offense is moldible to the talent of a passing or running qb and in the past they have geared it towards a throwing qb and utilizing the skill position players.

I thought Mallett was a true freshmen this year.

Yeah, if he transfered he only has 2 years of elgiblity remaining but had he redshirted like a lot of Qbs he would have 3 left which isnt so bad. And its not like hes played all that much this year to granish a year of experience. At the same time a lot of qbs dont get their first start until their junior year so who knows. IF he transfers it will definetly hurt UM.

Waht are you talking about? If he transfers, he still has 3 years to play. Not redshirting actually helps him keep a year.

If he transfers to a 1-A school he has to sit out a year and that year counts against him. If he goes 1-AA then I think he can immediately.

I think Hosak is referring to that if he hasn't used his redshirt year yet, he can declare the transfer year as his redshirt and then still be eligible for 3 years starting in the 2009 season.

Didn't read the thread, but now the Rodriguez is going to Michigan, Terrelle Pryor (#1 recruit in the nation) is strongly considering Michigan. It will be very interesting to see what happens when you bring the spread offense to the Big Ten, but do it with the talent that Michigan can bring in.

The thought of Pryor and Sam McGuffie in the backfield for Michigan makes my head spin. Hopefully McGuffie doesn't change his mind because of the coaching change, and Pryor does in fact decide to come to Michigan.

I'm sure WVU was saying the same thing about a Pryor/Devine combo. I think it will come down to UM/OSU.

Well if you look south of Michigan there is a school in the Big Ten that is recruiting as well as MIchigan, and runs the spread offense.

I thought you could only redshirt your freshman year. #-o

With the Prior news, just like that RR is already engaged in a big recruiting battle with OSU.

Wealthy donors mad at WVU officials for RRod departure.

"I tell you what, I've never seen anything mishandled as much as this was," Bob Reynolds, former chief operating officer of Fidelity Investments, said yesterday. "Here's a university that made a $200,000 decision -- it probably could've cost less than that [to keep Mr. Rodriguez] -- and it's going to cost them millions" in booster support, potential bowl money and revenue from football success.

"I've had calls from at least six major contributors to the program, and they're all done [donating] because they know the Mickey Mouse things that have gone on there,"

Mr. Reynolds declined to discuss it, but one source said he informed university officials yesterday that he planned to withdraw $12 million in donations he pledged to the school.

All agree that the details separating the two sides had nothing to do with Mr. Rodriguez getting richer.

In separate meetings with Athletic Director Ed Pastilong, Chief of Staff Craig Walker and, finally, late Saturday night with newly installed President Mike Garrison, he asked the university to do the following:

• Allow at least an additional $100,000 in bonus money for his assistants.

• Allow scholarship players to retain possession of textbooks at the end of each term, which meant they could have sold them, as apparently happens at other programs.

• Waive a $5 ticket fee for each high-school football coach attending Mountaineer home games, a fee that generates an estimated $5,000 for the university each season.

• Hire seven graduate assistants and a new recruiting coordinator, to ease the duties performed by secondary coach Tony Gibson.

"You could do them in 15 minutes," Mr. Reynolds said of the wish list.

Those supporters, who pledged millions last December for the six-year, $1.9 million-per-year contract that helped to keep Mr. Rodriguez from accepting the University of Alabama coaching position, offered to absorb the additional costs. Their offer was denied.

That doesn't even seem legal.

And praise Jesus that only one game stands between Brandon Cox and the end of his 6th and final year of eligibility.

No it doesn't but I'm sure some schools football players don't even have textbooks.

I'm surprised that the NCAA doesn't send an employee to a school to look if they are skirting rules in this regard. Have some guy around 22 or so pose as a student and observe what's going on regarding the student athletes.

Rick Neuheisel and Steve Mariucci are the first two candidates to get a second interview with Chancelor Block in the UCLA HC hunt. This is the first that I have heard that Mooch is still a candidate for the HC job. While neither would be in my current top 3 choices, both are preferrable to Norm Chow or DeWayne Walker.

i know you referred to john harbaugh as "the wrong harbaugh," but he's a great secondary coach. i can't really speak to whether he is qualified for a more significant position like head coach or nfl defensive coordinator, but he's good at what he does right now.

they know full well what's going on. they only come down on schools when the public catches wind of it

The NCAA put Ball State on probation for doing exactly this. Scholarship athletes were using their book money to get books for non-scholarship athletes. Every school does this but the NCAA has to crack down on a school like Ball State to give the impression that they give a damn about the rules.

Dew, get excited. I know I am. Norm Chow pulled his name out of consideration for the UCLA job. :D

Supposedly Temple HC Al Golden got an interview yesterday on campus. Weird.

Truff, it's good to hear Harbaugh is a good DB coach and I'm sure that's why he even got an interview but I want no part in a head coach who doesn't even have DC experience (let alone HC experience).
