If I were Pete I'd go to Washington or Miami before Atlanta. He certainly has a sweet gig at USC though and it's going to take a boatload of cash to get him away from there.

Every year we hear Petey is going somewhere. If it isn't a California team in a good situation, I might believe the rumors.

Yeah, you're probably right but your coach Rick should take advantage of that if he can! Washington and Miami are both storied franchises though and Miami has nice weather much like California.

He already said no to the Dolphins once - and that was when they weren't coming off a 1-15 season. I don't know that much has changed between the last few offseasons and this.

Parcells. He's a respected football coach and will add stability to the team. IMO, Pete wouldn't go there because I don't think Parcells would want him but I do think the Snyder of the Skins would give him a lot of cash and a team on the rise.

Calling Raisin. What can you tell me about Chuck Bullough? It looks like Fitz has some interest in him, although it could be for LBers coach and not DC:

Heh, was gonna post that. He's one of 2 assistants that Walker demanded be brought back as a condition of his re-signing. I don't know what to think about him since he has worked with pretty solid veteran college LBs (and behind a great DL) but the results were good. I don't think you can get him w/o promotion (even if he's a Midwestern guy) but I wouldn't mind his defection since it'd open the door to Ken Norton, Jr. returning to UCLA.

Probably not, no, but I don't think it's inconceivable for there to be a situation where UCLA really wants Norton back, they "push" Bullough out, Fitz decides to promote current LBers coach Randy Bates to the DC position, and then brings in Bullough for LBers coach. Of course, I'd imagine Bullough would take a nasty pay cut.

I couldn't get anything regarding his recruiting skills. It's easier to recruit at UCLA and considering all of the 4-stars that you guys get, his few recruits don't really stand out among the rest of the class.

Granted, if you believe the rumors from last winter and spring, Petey's wife wants him to move back to the NFL.

As a falcons fan, I know there is no realistic scenario where Carroll would come to the falcons, but I don't even want him, I have a feeling that when the first two years go badly he'll jump right back into the safety of college, every year there is an Alabama, Michigan, or WVU job open.

My wet dream would be Carroll coming to the falcons, and bringing in some studs in the draft and get the team back to mediocrity and/or respectability, then go right back to WVU (my family is mostly from there and attended WVU), to build them back up after Stewart drags them down.

Of the two defensive coaches that stayed with DeWayne Walker at UCLA, Bullough is considered the worse recruiter. That doesn't mean Bullough isn't good - 1) the other coach retained has just been really successful (he's gotten guys like Brian Price and Akeem Ayers in 07 and Datone Jones in 08 to pick UCLA over USC) and 2) one LB commit for 08 was quoted as saying he was happy that Walker AND Bullough were both retained. So maybe he's good but not great?

Of course recruiting at NU is a completely different beast so it's tough to fairly compare (even if UCLA has one of the toughest admission policies amongst public school athletics around).

I don't know, I just don't see Walker making a big deal out of retaining Bullough and Howard only to see one of those two bolt a month later.

Pete is a great college coach but its not like he is totally out coaching everybody on the football field in NCAA (ok Lloyd Carr, but does that really count). In the NFL he won't have the talent inbalance he has built for himself at USC. Hes a great recruiter, thats what makes him so good. Im not sure he will be able to transfer his style to the NFL anyway, his fun but serious approach works in college and it helps they are winning. What happens if he starts losing, Atlanta hello, the 'loosey goosey fun in the sun' stuff you hear about may end up getting frowned upon by the high paid players.

USC is a great place for him. If he leaves for the NFL and thinks he can come back to college and turn it on again and take any program to a perenial NC contender he should take a look at Steve Spurrier, it aint easy.

The funny part to me is that Atlanta just got burned by a college coach, and now they're considering another one.

not to mention the abysmal track record of college coaches going pro

Exactly. So you think maybe if you'd just gotten burned, you might be a little gunshy to go down that path again. But hey...if it hurts an NFC team and a random California team, I'm happy.

I would be too. O:)

Though I'd love to see Neuheisel stick it to Petey first.

Hey now...your random California team isn't immune from my geographically based "hater" attitude.

The former Texas Class 4A offensive player of the year may end up at Tennessee, which is considering hiring former Michigan offensive coordinator Mike DeBord and quarterbacks coach Scott Loeffler. "If they're hired, that would be a real good possibility," Jim Mallett said.

Not sure how crazy I am about Tennessee potentially hiring Debord after hearing the complaining on here, but if he brings Loeffler and Mallett with him, I think I can stand him.

For the Michigan fans out there, how much input did Lloyd Carr have on the Michigan offense? Did Carr demand the much-maligned "run-left" offense or was it the brainchild of DeBord? And do ya'll think DeBord would open things up if allowed to?

Also, for Raisin and others interested:

Mallett said his son also will consider transferring to Texas A&M, Arkansas and UCLA among other schools. After sitting out next season, he will have three years of eligibility.

Plus in the same article, Adrian Arrington and Mario Manningham will both declare for the NFL.

Per the LA Daily News, Neueheisel met with Loeffler today for an interview.

Man, he's really making the rounds. Fulmer met with Loeffler and DeBord today also. I've heard Phil could make a decision as early as tomorrow.

They're probably all in Anaheim for the coaching convention.

Ahh, good point. Forgot about that.

Fitz is pretty darn busy at the convention.

More news out of Purdue. Apparently the Lafayette Journal Courier is now reporting that Wisconsin's Paul Chryst is having second thoughts about being "named" Tiller's successor and Eastern Kentucky HC Danny Hope (that's a jump from Chryst to Hope) is now the front-runner.

Bullough is staying at UCLA. The LA Daily News is saying he was offered the Northwestern DC job, not LB coach.

Thanks for the update.

I hope that at least one of Tulsa's co-OCs is interested in the OC spot in Evanston. Either one of them would make a pretty interesting candidate.

Northwestern has reportedly filled its Offensive Coordinator vacancy first, hiring Bowling Green OC Mick McCall. He was promoted to be the Falcons' OC last year after spending four years as their QB coach. Needless to say, there's not a lot of info out there about him other than he's familiar with a run-first spread (which we need to get back to) and spent a lot of time coaching HS football.
