Good trade, now go get Detmers or Kirby.

It really sounds like pairing Gausman with one of the Angels' guys is the plan.  I don't love to post this long of an excerpt from an article but I think it's instructive from last night's Sharma/Mooney article

Quote

The Cubs can also use a historical reference with Gausman, who posted a 2.93 ERA in six playoff games (five starts) last year, including two quality starts against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series.

In hindsight, the Cubs should have pushed harder during the 2017 season to add Justin Verlander when they were defending World Series champs. Instead, he moved from the Detroit Tigers to the Houston Astros and enhanced his Hall of Fame-caliber resume.

“With the Cole Hamels deal, I learned a lesson on Justin Verlander,” Hoyer said during an extended interview last summer. “His stuff was down. He didn’t look good with Detroit. Whenever a player of that age has declining stuff, it’s hard to (know). And then he went to Houston and immediately his stuff ticked up. You try to balance: What is injury? What is age? (It could also be): ‘I’m frustrated in this bad situation right now.’

“The next year with Cole Hamels, we didn’t overthink it. He was struggling, and we went and got him. It felt like literally the minute he put our uniform on, he was dominant. That is a little bit of the human factor. You can go pretty poor making that bet over and over. But there are times when that can make sense with a veteran guy with that kind of track record.”

In a limited market for starting pitchers under club control beyond this year, the Los Angeles Angels hold two who have drawn interest from the Cubs: Reid Detmers and José Soriano, who was scratched from his scheduled start Saturday ahead of the trade deadline. While both are seen as potential building blocks through 2028, the context of this season and the expectations at Wrigley Field also matter.

Detmers, the No. 10 pick in the 2020 draft, has spent his entire professional career in the Angels organization. Soriano, who signed with the Angels as a teenager out of the Dominican Republic, briefly moved to the Pittsburgh Pirates’ farm system as a Rule 5 selection, but otherwise has only pitched for the Angels, a franchise that last won a playoff game in 2009 and now appears headed toward its 11th consecutive losing season.

That does not mean Detmers or Soriano could not thrive in Chicago, but the experience gaps are noticeable as the Cubs try to find the finishing pieces for a roster that, right now, is probably not deep or skilled enough to win four postseason rounds.

Going on and on and on about Gausman's experience and resume and then switching to the Angels guys and being like "we love these guys but gee that experience factor is lacking here" is not an accident.  Plan A is to have their cake and eat it too, just gotta see if Jed pulls it off.

Jim Bowden thinks the Cubs traded Tate Southiesene to the Blue Jays. The issue is that Tate is an Atlanta Braves prospect. Thanks, Jim. Good job.

Detmer+Adell and Morejon. If Jed pulls that off I happily eat crow and forgive him for all previous transgressions.

Why would San Diego trade Morejon? 1 game out of wildcard and they are hot 3 in a row 8/10

I'm stealing this from someone else but "I almost feel bad and think the Cubs should send more". This is a horsefeathers home run.

Brett Bateman and Ty Southesiene have a combined 7 dingers in their career. I like both as high-contact, high-defense bench guys, but these are mostly "dime a dozen" types in good systems. Gausman's fWAR is on par with Joe Ryan and Nolan McLean. And his xFIP is best on the Cubs already.

They have taken nothing away from their ability to get Kirby or Detmers or Soriano as well.

This is what an A+ trade looks like for a rental. Now go get more.

Preller doesn't work like the rest of the world. While I'd say "trading Morejon and then turning around and doing something else win-now" feels like a video game, AJ Preller runs the Padres like a video game team.

With Preller I just never say never.

I would have given it an A+ if we traded Tate and kept Ty

Literally saw a report a few minutes ago from one of the insiders saying they were considering trading for Devers lol. He’s a wild man and unpredictable

I am convinced Ty Southisene doesn’t exist at this point.

Don't mind the trade but I really liked these two prospects. High iq players take more walks then k's. No power but we have enough of that. Just hope they get someone to bat for happ. He can't hit leftys at all and is the least clutch player I've seen in years for the Cubs. He plays good d in lf but it's not a premium position. Also dump Alcantara guy is a bust wish Bateman would have been called up for some games. If we don't trade him put triantos out in left.

Welcome to NSBB.

And listen those are decent prospects, but you're talking at best bench players here. The Cubs could have traded six Brett Batemans in that trade and it'd still be an A-grade from me.

I'm listening to a Blue Jays podcast about the Gausman trade.  Basically, those guys are saying it's a fair trade, knowing what the Tigers got for Skubal.  They're kind of excited about Bateman.  They think he might play for the Jays this year.

He honestly might, especially if they trade Varsho. Bateman and Pinango possibly in that same starting lineup one day in September.

He probably will. Bateman is a Justin Dean type. He should make an MLB roster. He can add some speed, some glove and some contact. He can be a 25th/26th man. But that's probably his ceiling, too.

For where he was picked, it's a steal. But it's a limited upside player, too.

From all reports he's a great dude so I'm happy he's getting a chance.

No harm giving him a shot but best of luck to him and the Jays.
