It’s Boyd -

Not a big fan of this decision but at least he can pitch on normal rest in game 4 or extra rest in game 5

The Brewers Are Trying to Troll the Cubs During Batting Practice - Bleacher Nation

I would not be mad about them basically playing the Sirius XM Yacht Rock station, personally.

Coming from an organization that authorize their manager to create a fake letter from a dead guy to help inspired his own players. This does not surprise me.

With that said, I doubt it bother the players. In fact, I hope they had a good chuckle at the Brewers would be troll job.

Boyd pitched 10 innings against the Brewers and allowed 9 runs with a 5:8 K:BB. I mean it looked like he was tipping pitches the way they chased nothing and had a lot of hard contact. A little scary.

Not chasing is kind of their thing.

What’s the upside of Boyd going in Game 1? If we had two stud SP and having Boyd go in G1 means he can go on normal rest in G4, which allows our second guy to go G2 and G5 both on normal rest, then it makes sense. But Taillon can’t go until G3 anyway unless he also goes on short rest in G2. I don’t really need Shota getting two starts in the series either.

Short rest starts generally go poorly, though I’m sure most of those guys threw 90+ pitches in their first start before short rest.

I guess he’s planning on going Boyd-Shota-Taillon-Boyd-Shota and using the pen liberally in G1 and G2 since there are off days after each game.

Since Boyd threw 58 pitches last start the 3 days rest shouldn't be a huge deal.

It's that combined with pitching over 100 innings more than any of the previous 3 seasons, combined with his struggles against Milwaukee this year (albeit obvious SSS), combined with his struggles in September.

That said I've talked myself into Boyd going 3-4, Rea going 2-3, and the pen the rest of the way and the fact that Boyd would be able to pitch game 4 on normal rest if needed and game 5 on extra rest.

Shota game 2, Taillon Game 3, Boyd Game 4, all hands on deck Game 5

I think the upside of Boyd starting is that you don't have to use Javier Assad. See if you can get Boyd/Rea to combo for 6 innings and then go to the pen.

Technically they can choose to only use their 3 best SP since the Gane 1 and 2 SP can start games 4 and 5 on normal rest.

But beyond Boyd and maybe Taillon there's no clear 3rd best SP.  Shota has kinda sucked lately.  Luckily the Brewers were 22nd I believe in hitting HR.  We need to avoid walks, which our rotation is best in MLB at.

What i like about Boyd is his pick off move can control their running game.  I think we match up well against them.

Don’t like the idea of Boyd on short rest., at all. Especially so because he hasn’t been good against the Brewers.. IMO a bad decision.

All else being equal you want to throw LHP at the Brewers.  If you think Boyd threw so little on Tuesday that this short rest won't hurt him, he's the clear top option.

I'd have done a Rea/Bullpen game, but I get it.

Why? They put up 107 equally against each side pitcher last I looked.

It's mostly BABIP, they have a .319 against lefties which at the team level is preposterous.  And it's not earned through batted ball quality, their hard hit rate is simply fine and their barrel rate sucks.

Like they're not a disaster against lefties, but I'd say they're noticeably worse.  xwOBA is .313 against lefties and .325 against righties.  And for whatever issues you can take with xwOBA hard to quibble comparing the same team against itself.

Pitching match ups set up poorly for the Cubs, but I guess I do understand Boyd for game 1. Means he can go game 4 on normal rest. Boyd is very good at Wrigley. So maybe if the Cubs can win a game or, better yet, 2 before then they would have Boyd going at home. Peralta is very good, but Cubs do ok against him. Not many hits, but they do take walks and drive his pitch count up. Going to be a tough series, but they can do it.

Makes sense, didnt pay attention to that

Brewers rust is the only possible matchup advantage today and that’s with the hope that it offsets their rest. If Boyd can’t find the strike zone they’re in big trouble.

There’s really no pitching matchup advantages with the Horton injury. Just like the padres series they’ll have to limit home runs and let the gloves do the work. Is Woodruff going to pitch?
