Yeah I don't think this gets notably lengthy unless/until we hit Monday

That said I think most of the prolonged will it/won't it sagas during the Theo/Hoyer era have eventually reached the finish line?  Darvish, Swanson, Bellinger.  I think trading KB to the Braves post grievance is the big one that never materialized.

Good point on the getting to the finish line aspect.

There's also sometimes banal reasons why these things drag on, like Swanson was on his honeymoon.  Doesn't stop the Heyman's of the world from doing the horserace schtick.

If the Cubs do this , they better follow up by getting  an impact starter and a couple of late inning arms .  Money  better be there for those moves . If not , this whole thing would not make sense IMO.

I think Cassie makes more sense for the Astros than Smith . They can put him in RF right away and use the money they offered to Bregman on Christian Walker

Seems like the Tucker trade is waiting on the Bellinger trade to be completed, and money is the issue with the Bellinger trade.

Hoyer likely wants the Yankees to take majority to all of Bellinger money so they can make additional moves

I read somewhere that Heyman said today the Cubs are willing to eat some money now .  I wonder what the Yankees think Bellinger is worth on AAV , 18 million ?

I think we all know how this is going to end.

I mean you kept saying you want the cubs to walk away if they're asking too much. it sounds like they're currently asking too much.

I definitely do, it's more that I expect this Tucker hype to be the highlight of the offseason where the Cubs go from in talks of adding an MVP level player, but come opening day, it's going to be someone like Joc Pederson instead.

I had this account blocked. Are we sure it’s not just going for clicks? Here’s some of their other tweets for reference:IMG_7963.thumb.png.0f1fa76e3ac1a3c2728fcef426bc357c.png

Love the narrative forming. Jed is either going to be a pussy for not getting the deal done (remember all the incredible  'He must be hibernating' jokes from last year) OR if he gets a/the deal done, he gave up too much and we can immediately shift to 'well, there's no way he's going to extend him, so that was dumb'. And then if he does extend him, man, what a waste of money for one player. There's always some way to confirm your priors!

What narrative? I'll go on record for what I think is a reasonable deal. I'd love to have Tucker, if it takes Paredes+Smith+Assad then by all means. The absurd Paredes+Seiya+Shaw packages are way beyond that. If he can't get a deal done on Tucker, so be it, but he better have something else up his sleeve that isn't a bench bat, a back of the rotation starter or a mid relief arm.

I feel like you are mixing and matching different people’s complaints and calling them one. People who whine about guys being too expensive are not the same people whining about Hoyer being a spendthrift coward.

I don’t hesitate pointing out Hoyer has done a horrible job so far. The team is way too mediocre, especially for what they’ve spent. I’d be very happy if he acquired an impact player and not particularly worried about whatever second tier guys he gives up to make it happen. I also believe it is smart to acquire so called rentals as it’s much easier to sign your own guys than somebody else’s. And I’m not going to lament any so called overpay the bootlickers worry about. Overpay for impact players all day everyday.

you said you'd hate doing Seiya + Paredes for Tucker. maybe I'm wrong, but I'd do that pretty quickly. then again, I'm also of the thinking that Jed is actually going to try to extend him

I said it makes no sense because what you're gaining in RF, you're losing the vast majority of it at 3B. Especially if Cody is gone as well.

I wouldn't. Especially if Bellinger is going to the Yankees. Bellinger probably gets done first.

To me even Paredes + anyone above Alcantara/Triantos is kind of pushing it. Paredes is 3 years of a 3+ fWAR 3B that's going to rake in that park. I dont see his value as that much lower than Tucker given the difference in control. I would need to be super confident in my ability to extend Tucker to pull a trigger like what is being tossed around.

If you go on Yankees forums, they are posting tweets of how they arent really offering horsefeathers for him. The Astros are asking for Gil, but it sounds like that's not a thing the Yankees are interested in.

This is where I'm at too.

Yankees offer is probably Gil++

Phillies offer is probably Bohm++?

Do either teams have better secondary and tertiary pieces to even beat Paredes, Alcantara, and Triantos?

We've finally reached the point of the offseason where we re-live the Peavy and Roberts trades. An offseason or trade deadline doesn't officially begin until this happens.

it's the annual "precurser" to transactions.

It doesn't sound like that's the case.

The reports on Gil are that the Astros "want" him. Nothing suggests that the Yankees have considered that.

Quote

"I talked to someone with the Astros’ front office and was told the Yankees didn’t offer anything the Astros wanted,” an anonymous source told NJ.com's Randy Miller. “Nothing. They think the Yankees have offered crap.” Considering Steve Cohen just outbid Hal Steinbrenner for the best available talent, the idea that Cashman is low-balling GM Dana Brown and the Astros will not sit well with The Bronx.

https://www.nj.com/yankees/2024/12/astros-feel-yankees-low-balling-in-kyle-tucker-in-trade-talks-offering-crap.html

There's also some rumblings on whether or not the Astros owner will even approve a deal to the Yankees.

My stance is that if the Astros want Paredes + Suzuki + Shaw/Smith, then there better be something damn nice coming in addition to Tucker. That's 6+ fWAR of production with 5 total years of control and a top tier prospect for 1 year of a 5 fWAR player. That just doesnt pass the smell test to me, especially with the possibility of Bellinger going to NY. You just removed 3 talented bats from your starting lineup, for 1 in return,  and 1 prospect projected to take one of those spots in the near future.

Feel like Paredes + Wicks + some 3rd tier prospect should be more than enough to get it done. Then Bellinger goes to NY for a package including Warren to replace Wicks. Then go after someone like Cease with guys like Alcantara +.
