Man, getting Chapman or Monty on a similar deal would make this team the unquestionable central favorite. With that said, adding one more good pen arm would make me happy too.

If they are under the first LT line with this signing, IMO, they are done. If they are a few million over anyway, I can see another small”ish” signing. Maybe for a pen arm for $5M to $8M. If they are over anyway, might  as well add but not go over the $257M line.

I generally hate contracts with opt-outs, but this one isn't bad.

Speaking of opt outs, Bellinger, Imanga and Neris all got one. Guess that's Hoyers thing

my only concern is that this takes us out of the austin meadows sweepstakes

The David Peralta contract did that.

Basically we're looking at Amaya, Busch, and Morel being the unknown of the lineup with the DH spot.

Those guys need to be somewhat productive to help out the others in the lineup.

Gomes/Amaya

Busch

Hoerner

Swanson

Morel

Happ

Bellinger

Suzuki

Wisdom  RH DH

Mervis/Smith/Peralta LH DH

Mastrobuoni

Tauchman

Belli and Swanson

vs

Belli and Imanaga

at least didn’t sign any Hosmer/Barnhart types to big league deals!

So I’d agree with you!!!

Edit: Plus a trade for Busch!

Also got Counsell and Neris.

Wasn't somebody here insisting that nobody does opt-outs anymore or am I making that up?

It makes it a lot easier to get quality players on short term deals if you give them a chance to hit FA again immediately in the event they play well🤣 Neither Imanaga or Bellinger are Cubs right now if their markets don't crater so much that they'd prefer to try the market another year. It's definitely a strategy that's going to lead to a lot of longterm uncertainty, and some agonizing offseasons. But it was played pretty perfectly for Hoyer this year and gives them more time to spit out cheaper options.

Is this it for Mervis? I can’t see how they keep him with Belli back this year and Busch looking like the future.

Why can't he DH vs RHP?  They don't have a lot of power LH bats to DH.  Dom Smith, Peralta, Tauchman, Mastrobuoni, not the best group.  We don't have a DH

It's an awkward setup right now.

Mervis could have a shot at starting the season as our DH. But to do so, he needs to have a big spring (unlikely), PCA needs to be in AAA (probable), and Morel needs to be capable of faking it at 3B (less probable). There are additional factors to consider -- Dom Smith could rediscover whatever voodoo magic led to his 2020 season. Patrick Wisdom could have an April like he did last year. Maybe a nagging injury moves one of our regulars to DH for a bit. Etc...

There's factors in his favor too. But he's really gonna have to thread the needle to snag any playing time early on. I just don't see it.

Really curious who gets let go to make room for Bellinger.

https://www.mlb.com/cubs/roster/40-man

There is no one on the roster I would consider an easy decision to DFA.  There's also no one we publicly know to be hurt enough to warrant a 60 Day IL stint.  Can Jed quickly swing a trade, or does he burn a little bit of value by DFA'ing like Keegan Thompson or Matt Mervis.

Part of me wonders if he doesn't do what the Dodgers did a couple times this offseason and trade one or two guys off the 40 man for interesting unrostered prospects.

I love Keegan and want him to be a thing again but he might be the odd man out this time. There's plenty other starters/long relievers that have leapfrogged him on the depth chart.

Mastrobuoni or Mervis is my guess

I LOVE this deal. This is the contract I was kinda hoping for, especially as the offseason wore on, but in no way did I expect it to happen. If Belli has another monster year, he still hits FA before he's 30 and we have given the young guys another season to grow.. If he falters, he's locked in for another year and we work with what we have down the road and have options. I don't see a downside to this.
