Wait, what? I don't know Jim Riley, but he must be from L.A. How are the Dodger and Cub deals even in the same universe? LA's #6 and #10 prospect, neither a top 100 guy, both atrocious in their MLB stints last year, and that's somehow in line with a package of what you could argue are 4 better prospects?

How in the blue hell does the Dodgers' deal come remotely close to the Cubs' deal value-wise?

Also, if this were a deal for 2-3 years of Devers, it'd be worth some consideration (although I'd ultimately be against it). But a single season? Hard pass.

There is some speculation about the Cubs and Mancini, but I haven't heard anything at all about Will Myers. I assume Mancini might take less money/years, but Myers might be a viable option if the money/years are reasonable.

I think Fulmer is my favorite reliever left, so this is welcome news. If they added him then I'd be comfortable with the pen as a whole. Fulmer/Hughes/Boxberger in late innings, Thompson/Alzolay (with Wesneski in reserve) as aggressive multi inning options, Leiter Jr/Wick (plus eventually Heuer/Estrada/Rodriguez/etc) as single inning middle relievers, with Sampson/Assad as a long relief/inning eater option.

I wonder if Escobar or Canha would be available now that they added Correa. I’d prefer Escobar by a decent amount more but Canha could be a fit too.

I feel like they are going to legitimately go after Ohtani.

Jed's going to have to put his big boy pants on for that to happen.

Yeah I think Jed's more likely to play in the end of the pool where he ends up with something like Matt Chapman and Aaron Nola or Lucas Giolito and Manny Machado.

I'm just intrigued at what Jed might have told Swanson about future plans to make him feel comfortable about committing. It could just be a nothing 'intro press conference' quote or it could be less about targeting specific names and more about general organizational strategy, but I'm curious

Weren’t the Cubs the surprise runner up for Ohtani way back when? I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if he’s their first dive into $300+ (mostly bc it looks more impressive and expensive than it is)

They were, though I would guess the Cubs looked a lot more appealing in the 2017 offseason than they do now. On the plus side the universal DH is here and that seemed to be a big sticking point for going to the Cubs.

My HOT TAKE is that I don't see how the Ohtani contract ends well for anyone. For him to get even CLOSE to his true value, you're looking at $50M per year, honestly probably like $60-$75M per if he does what he has the last 2 years. If you're doing that contract, you have to commit to having a 2023 Mets payroll for the entire length of the contract or you won't be able to be competitive unless you develop like the Rays for a solid decade. While I love that Cohen is doing that payroll in 2023 and every single owner has more money than God, I don't see that happening for anyone, especially the Cubs.

Not to mention, how on earth does Ohtani keep this up another 10 years? What he has done in 2021 and 2022 has never been done in the history of the sport and to count on him continuing that into his late 30s/early 40s just seems impossible.

That being said, as a fan, those first few years watching Ohtani would probably be the coolest thing you could ever see outside of winning a championship.

Yeah curious if there's something as specific as Heyward being named during the Lester pitch.

Even if it's more generalities, there is quite a bit of money to play with over the next few years, and we're at the point where there's plenty of fun stuff on the farm at AA/AAA. Even resigning ourselves to PTR wanting to dip under the LT every 2-3 years, they could add essentially whoever they want. It's really more about what Jed's appetite is for putting out winning bids. At this point I think it's clear he's going to be more concerned with like 2026+ than we'd like, but we're now at the point that he can be a dweeb about that and still add impact talent each winter.

I preferred the other two guys we were tied to, but the differences between each were so marginal it's very easy to believe the soft stuff they bring to the job is more important.

I'm much more interested in the 1B/DH situation. Both whether they come down with Conforto and whether they add two guys or just one.
