No big deal, just a pitcher making Craig Biggio look like he took a report card that read “30 career hits” and added two zeros to fool his parents.

If I had to choose between a second WS win and Grant Brisbee writing about the Cubs full-time, I'm pretty sure I'd prefer the second one.

Agreed. If anything since the WS, fandom has been really hard. Meanwhile grant would quickly make it better

Does anyone know when Patrick Mooney changed from being a pretty good (if slightly boring) beat writer to being Captain Doom Boner? It feels like it happened very suddenly, and he's gotten really bad.

He got like this at the end of his time at CSN, so I don't know that we can blame the Athletic.

What happened this year as far as working counts?

"Controlling the strike zone" was a Theo point of emphasis from like early 2015 against most pitchers except maybe occasional games against Kershaw--type guys.

This year, it seems like most of the team is totally failing at working counts and getting pitches to hit. New approach, or just a symptom of the team slump they're going through right now?

Edit: Looks like they're at 3.87 P/PA this year, same as last year, but 0.1 pitches/PA off the 2016 pace.

Just think how bad it would be if Lester / Yu / Q went down for the year with an injury. We have next to nothing to fill in (Butler and Monty don’t count).

It would be unequivocally a bad thing, but Montgomery has a sub-4 ERA in nearly 20 starts as a Cub.

Those three pitchers have a combined 0.2 fWAR.

No kidding. We'd very likely be a worse team without any of those 3, but they're an odd 3 to single out right now (Lester's weird ability to get around constantly falling behind 3-1 notwithstanding).

Why don't Butler and Montgomery count? Do you think other teams have extra rotation guys stockpiled and ready to replace top or middle-of-rotation starters without missing a beat? Montgomery and Butler are serviceable replacement 5th starters, and that is really all they need to be.

Stephen Piscotti's mother died yesterday from ALS and they put up a fundraiser looking for 100k in donations for ALS research.

Yu Darvish donated $10k

Dang. I actually like him. I knew it wasn’t good and saw him very angrily slam his bat down after a K a couple of days ago and was wondering if it was a tough week for him off the field.
