The one exception to this rule is probably Southern California. Although this part of the country did create Jim Rome.

Other than that, stupid sports media and sports BEING IMPORTANT is universal.

yeah, that was a weird question.

florida too, obviously.

just look at how easily cubs fans can get into road playoff games usually too. atlanta couldn't sell out damn playoff games.

You guys are flat out nuts if you don't think all of those markets don't have terrible, obsessive sports media out the wazoo. Atlanta's got three miserable sports radio stations just like the Vaunted Chicago Sports Market. Florida has three dozen(!!!!) sports stations. California has twenty seven.

Illinois? Only a whopping fifteen, less than the twenty that can be found here in Virginia.

Hello from Orange County, California. We've got 3 million people. We've got two sports radio stations, but they rarely run local content. It's almost always national syndicated stuff until it's time for an Angels or Ducks, and then they get a pre-game show of one or two hours. It's all generic PR stuff. The teams sell enough tickets and do enough TV ratings to keep the lights on, but it's not something the whole area gets caught up in.

If there's some frothing racist Kaplan equivalent waiting for Otani to fall apart, I haven't run across them.

Hi from Northern Virginia! I can give you years of reading on all of the local hot takes just on the Redskins name alone. When you're finished with that, I've got a heaping helping of scintillating analysis of Bryce Harper and the problems with his attitude, how he plays, his injuries, his hair, etc., etc.. Then we tackle Strasburg and how weak/fragile he apparently is. Then we can back up the trucks to get the takes about how the Capitals are world class choke artists and don't have the guts or the mental makeup to win. Then we can cry about the Wizards and their immaturity or their lack of a leader or their criminally bad FO/ownership, or still bemoaning everything that happened to the bizarre mid 2000's team. I mean, I know it's just a fly by night podunk operation that can't compare to the sound and fury of the PASSION of Chicago sports media, but hey, they try!

Seriously; the idea that Chicago is some kind of clear leader or model in the world of terrible sports takes is the weirdest bit of self-loathing bragging I've ever seen.

Bay Area is another.

I lived in Cleveland in 2011 for 6 months. Talk about some depressing sports talk... And it was impossible to find anything nationally syndicated. Just local shows from the time you woke up until the time you went to sleep.

2011

Ohio State Football 6-7

+ Michigan 11-2

Cleveland Browns 4-12

+ Ravens/Steelers perennial contenders

Cleveland Indians 80-82

+ Detroit Tigers perennial contenders

NBA Lockout

+ “The Decision” was still fresh

it's 2018 and the all star ballot still only shows triple crown stats and stolen bases

Meh. It's the All Star team, not the All-VORP team. Stars drive in runs and hit dongs.

VORP you!

Since the season is one third through and makes for easy and clean math, let's have some fun with fWAR extrapolations

Yay

Bryant: 7.2

Schwarber: 5.1

Almora: 5.1

Zobrist: 5.1

Contreras: 4.5

Russell: 3.9

Baez: 3.9

Happ: 3.3

Morrow: 1.8

Edwards: 1.8

Cishek: 1.5

Yuck

Rizzo: 1.8

Heyward: 1.2

Lester: 1.5

Hendricks: 1.5

Quintana: 1.2

Darvish: 0.6

Chatwood: 0.4 (this is actually 0.3 but Chatwood loves things that come in fours so we'll humor him)

Duensing: -0.3

I feel like it's fair to point out that Rizzo was worth 1.1 fWAR in May. If he's close to that the rest of the way, he'll end up around 4 WAR which is what he put up last year.

I know you can't just ignore a month but considering his track record, I think we can bet on Rizzo being more of what he was in May than April the rest of the way. His overall numbers might end up a bit down from normal though just because of how bad he was in April.

Offensively we look pretty good, but the rotation sucks.

surprised at how good Russell and Contreras look extrapolated out, also surprised by our entire rotation being that low but those are based on xFIP right? I expect that will improve but if not, well, whatever

fWAR is based on just FIP, not xFIP. I expect most of the rotation and Rizzo to not be in such a state by year's end, and although it's fun to imagine a team with 9 (!) position players north of 3 fWAR, odds are not great that all of those folks continue their pace the full season.

Never forget (or forgive) that the Cubs opted to visit the Trump WH for NO horsefeathering REASON SINCE THEY HAD ALREADY SHOWN UP AFTER WINNING THE WS as we hear all of the brouhaha over the Eagles (the horsefeathering EAGLES) being awesome and not going.
