Bad couple days for former Cubs in KC.

The Royals have demoted right-hander Jason Hammel to the bullpen for the time being, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com was among those to tweet.

...

Instead, the once-competent Hammel has begun his age-35 season with a 6.16 ERA and his lowest K/9 (5.8) since 2011 over 102 1/3 innings. It’s the second disappointing campaign in a row for Hammel, who has combined for a 5.60 ERA across 280 2/3 frames since KC added him on a two-year, $16MM guarantee entering 2017.

Hammel leads the league in hits allowed, earned runs allowed and losses.

and:

The Royals have requested unconditional release waivers on right-hander Justin Grimm, as Maria Torres of the Kansas City Star and other media members have reported.

...

Unfortunately for Grimm, he simply never got things together with the Royals, posting a 13.50 ERA over 12 2/3 innings and recording more walks (14) than strikeouts (eight). It has now been back-to-back rough seasons for Grimm, who had a 5.53 ERA for the Cubs last season thanks in large part to an ungainly 12 homers allowed over 55 1/3 innings.

Ungainly is the word they go with there?

Unsurprisingly they lead the NL in runs scored. Despite having no DH, they're tied with the Yankees in that department

Man, 2017 was weird.

It was. We had perfect health and returned Schwarber for a full season and we didn't play anywhere near our potential until after the ASB.

The whole rotation got hurt at some point or was pitching through it (everyone had velo drops, Jake, Hendricks and Lackey all hit the DL, I don’t recall Lester but maybe he did?), Russell, Willy, Rondon also had injuries

Are Q and Hendricks fixed now?

I'm being way too picky about Quintana but I'd like to see him pitch deeper into games. He's only pitched more than 6 innings twice in 18 starts this year. I dunno maybe part of it is intentional by the Cubs...it looks like he only threw 86 pitches yesterday.

How many times have other Cubs starters gone more than 6 this year?

EDIT:

Lester has 5 times, Hendricks has 5. Chatwood has once.

Darvish and Montgomery haven't at all.

Agree but he came out for a PH last night in a low scoring game, IIRC.

Q has a 3.00 ERA and decent peripherals if you take out his first 4 starts. I haven't been worried about him.

Is Hendricks' velo ok? He had a rough patch there but was electric in his last start.

Hendricks' issues weren't really about velocity though. It was about location.

eh, that's kind of an obnoxious tone. it's been pretty much exactly one full season since he's come to the cubs. he's been worth 2.6 WAR in that full season. relative to his history where he was pretty consistently hovering around 5 WAR per year, it's fair to have some level of disappointment in what he's been for the cubs, particularly this season.

A little disappointed sure, he can bet better. But to act like he’s been no good at all and a complete bum like a huge chunk of the fan base has acted is equally obnoxious and out of line.

Probably a good thing when all is said and done. You could see how worn out Lester, Arrieta, Hendricks, et al. were after our 2016 run. Jon's a bit of a different story because he's a workhorse and has been doing it his whole career. Q's also been incredibly durable throughout his career. But going 200 innings every year and then another 25 or so in deep playoff runs will eventually catch up to most guys.

The Cubs are 12-6 in Quintana starts this year. We have 8 bullpen arms. The AAA Shuttle has given us a ton of quality innings and helped keep everyone else fresh. It's all worked out fine so far. Realistically, he could be working deeper into games as it is. He's only averaging 91 pitches per start. He's only been over 100 pitches 4 times. He's been under 90 9 times. They've been smart to not extend him because he hasn't been that great and it's usually not a good thing when pitchers are going through a lineup a 3rd or 4th time. If he starts pitching better, he'll get his chances to do so. But, for now, it's being handled perfectly and will keep him fresh for when he is pitching better.

is that happening here? i know brett wasn't speaking about here, but i don't really care what the twitter idiots and everyone's uncle think about quintana. he's been fine. but, given his track record, age, stuff, and health, he really should be the best performer on this staff. instead, this year, he's been less valuable than pedro strop and as valuable as cishek. my disappointment is always going to be relative to my super high, but i think reasonable, expectations for him. i want him to go back to being a super stud.
