2007, Rich Hill posts almost 200 IP and a ERA+ of 119.

Now he nets us a lousy PTBNL. Talk about selling low.

Roto

Orioles acquired LHP Rich Hill from the Cubs in exchange for a player to be named later.

Like Felix Pie and Ronny Cedeno before him, Hill was traded at a discount by the Cubs because he was out of minor league options. The quality of player to be named later will likely depend upon how well Hill fares in Baltimore after struggling with his control last season. If the Orioles can get him back to throwing strikes, Hill can be a solid No. 3 starter and nice sleeper target in AL-only leagues.

Remember when Hill could have landed the Cubs Adam Dunn? Hendry said NO.

Maybe not Dunn, but we could have got a lot more than a PTBNL. While sophmore slumps do happen, nobody would have imagined that 2008 would be the trainwreck it was for him.

Hey I'm not thrilled about selling Hill for next to nothing, but I don't think we should bash Hendry for not seeing this coming with Hill. Who knew the guy would go mental and go from being one of the more promising young left-handers in the game to not being able to get guys out in the low-minors?

Granted we won't know the exact details, but to me this a decent trade -- he does well, we get a good player, if he s*cks, we still get a prospect and he stinks it up for the O's.

a couple of thoughts.

I would have rather gambled on a player who has had major league success, than any PTBNL we will get from Baltimore. Though I understand the decision to get what you can.

I think it is down right ridiculous to say that a player, who made it to the majors, pitching with his non-dominate hand is not "mentally tough"

Who knows if it would have made a difference or not but Hill wasn't even the worst starter when he was pulled out of the rotation by Lou when he couldn't find the plate.

yep. not often you get something like this: a virtual assurance that it will be a fair trade, to some degree.

Doesn't do anything for the frustration that this is what has become of RICH HILL in such a short time.

i like how all the articles are like "hill was good for a while a few years ago, blah, blah, then completely fell apart last season. he was sent to the minors with a 4.12 era early in 2008."

C'mon Abuck, you're smarter than that.

And a WHIP of 4.58

Lou's handling of Hill was similar to his awful handling of Pie. Except Hill had already been rumored to be fragile, so it was even worse.

Who was the manager during the Barret/AJ fiasco where Hill was lambasted for talking?

He had 18 walks in 19 innings and didn't do any better an in the minors. The ERA is a result of luck.

Why give Hill away for nothing? They should have let him come to spring training and see where hes at. The only thing they would be losing is the ptbnl.

anytime your whip is higher than your era, you're a complete failure.

Well that's not true. I'd be pretty happy to have a pitcher with a 0.00 ERA and a WHIP of 0.01.

Hill was the only one to blame for him sucking so bad last year. I can't believe people are blaming Lou for not letting Hill suck more, after a bad spring and walking 18 in 19 IP. Or upset with Hendry for selling low, when Hill was so bad. If Hill even showed any signs of life in the minors, or in the winter league. He either wouldn't have traded him or gotten more for him. People just need to blame someone to blame someone. Nobody ever likes blaming the players for going bad, for whatever reason.
