ESPN Radio's Bruce Levine wrote yesterday that the Cubs are weighing offers for lefty Rich Hill, who is out of options. Hill, 29 in March, is clearly a change of scenery guy. He did fine big league work in 2006-07, but lost his feel for pitching in 2008. Teams hoping for a Cliff Lee-type renaissance are sure to inquire.

I don't have the scoop on those teams, but it's safe to say that Hill needs a smaller market and a team that can tolerate his peaks and valleys without demoting him. My guess at the six candidates to acquire Hill: the Royals, Mariners, Padres, Pirates, Marlins, and Orioles.

he won't have the ghost of that first pitch home run to chris young swimming in his mind's eye anymore when he leaves

then he will dominate this year and be the NL cy young...while our very own dick harden goes down after his first 3 innings, finally admitting that he should have had offseason surgery way back in october

followed by ted lilly disclosing a ruptured tendon in his hand because he likes to throw his glove down forcefully upon the mound

big z will come out and admit that he is overweight and the shame will not allow him to pitch effectively

ryan dempster will let all of his homeland canadians slide an overwhelming feeling of guilt into his psyche because he opted not to pitch in the WBC, thus causing him to regress to a barely sub 6 era

heilman will use the same quote after every horrendous start this year, "What did you expect? You have watched the Mets the past two seasons right? What? You thought I was going to be a [expletive] lucky rabbits foot?"

however, after the cubs don't make any deadline deals because of the unfortunate decapitation of josh vitters while playing hacky sack, lou piniella becomes so obese that rothschild has to roll him out to the mound for his visits, at least giving the fans of this team of lovable losers something to giggle about during the torturous summer months.

hmmm.... the padres, huh? Anyone on the Padres that we might like?

;)

I was wondering why Hill's name was not listed to begin with. Could be had cheap, has MLB experience and had success, only needs mental tweeks. Why not take a flier on him when he could start 30 games this season for them.

Well he doesn't have options so that's one thing. I'm not saying he wouldn't go in a Peavy trade, just that he doesn't really add much value to the trade, especially since the Cubs pretty much have to trade him anyways.

he has hardly any value right now.

I'm not so sure it's scenery that will fix Hill, as much as it may be time. It's virtually assured that he won't do it with the Cubs because of the way contracts work. If he ever does figure it out, it will be somewhere else a year or so from now, and change of scenery will be the accepted reason.

Which is why we should just give him a shot at spring training. Whorst case scenerio, he sucks, gets cut, and some other team picks him up, and we dont get the crappy prospect(s) that we would have had we traded him.

Bottom line, a productive Rich Hill, although that may be a pipe dream at this point is far more valuable than what anyone would be willing to trade for him at this point, so its really worth the risk of hanging on to him.

I imagine that Hill's value is so low that Hendry might just choose his trade partner based on where Rich says he'd like to go.

Sad that it has come to this, especially considering his value a year ago. I highly expect to get a no-name low level minor leaguer that will never amount to anything, which is a far cry from last year when we could have possibly got someone like Roberts.

His value is so low right now that whoever we get for him is never going to amount to anything, unless we get extremely lucky. We might as well just keep him through ST and see if he can figure it out and if he still sucks just non-tender him or put him on waivers.

O's, Cubs Talking Deal For Hill

By Drew Silva [January 29 at 8:30pm CST]

Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun reports that the Orioles are looking to acquire Cubs' left-hander Rich Hill.

An industry source told Zrebiec that it's a "strong possibility" that Hill will end up with the Orioles. Apparently the Cubs would receive a player to be named later in return. Hill, 28, went 1-0 with a 4.12 ERA in five starts last season. He has a 4.37 career ERA.

At this point I hope the Cubs ask for a good prospect in return, knowing other teams are hoping for a Cliff Lee type turnaround---which I still doubt will happen.
