rich hill hasnt done anything in a long, long time. what happens if we keep him thru ST, and he still can't throw strikes? we cut him, and get nothing. the question that you must answer if youre jim hendry is this... what's more likely, that rich will continue to be a terrible, terrible pitcher who cant find the zone, or that he'll suddenly remember how? i'm going with the former. and i think hendry is wise to at least get something rather than nothing.

It's risk/reward. What's the benefit to trading away Hill? You get a low A reliever. Even if there's a 5% chance that Hill can contribute something this year, that's a better bet than the PTBNL turning into anything.

i'd say it's much more likely that the PTBNL helps the cubs than rich hill ever would. as hendry said himself, rich had his shot and he blew it. he blew it pretty badly.

Except for that entire season where he was really good

yeah he was awesome in 07. but then he forgot how to throw strikes in 08. past success doesnt really mean much when you can't do the fundamental thing a pitcher is supposed to do -- throw strikes.

Hendry is likely thinking beyond the PTBNL to opening another spot on the roster, which may give the team some flexibility to bring aboard another player, etc. He's clearly not finished tinkering.

ah...the voice of reason

Gotta make room for the return of Les Walrond.

But you said he was given his chance and blew it, which isn't really true. He was given his chance, did really well, and then fell apart.

And where did Hendry ever say he was given his chance and blew it?

there is one spot open now

a backup middle infielder is coming soon

does the 40 man have to be full at the start of the season, or can it still have a spot open?

Ugh.

Would have liked to see the Cubs try to bring him back as a LOOGY reliever.

God only knows what new depressing mediocrity his spot is now open for.

not sure where i read it, it was right around the convention though.

that really doesn't sound like something hendry would say.... or any GM for that matter

And to think we could have gotten Roberts for him last year at this time. We might have even of been able to trade him, with others, for Santana.

40 man can have as many spots open as you want.
