What the flip is Jim Hendry's fascination with making deals with Baltimore? Nothing good has ever come to the North Side via Maryland.

Lil' Babe Ruth isn't enough to disprove my point.

true, but it's not like he keeps getting ripped off either

Seriously, if all were goig to get out of this is a player to be named later, who 9 times out of 10 ends up a career AAer, the least we could do is hang on to him through spring training and see what he can do. If we end up getting another Doug Deeds type, and Hill cranks out 17 wins for Baltimore, it will not look good for the GM formerly known as Spendry.

It seems as though all of Hendrys one time "Untouchables" are being shipped off for next to nothing. Next thing you know, he'll be entertaining offers for Sam Fuld

Landing Fontenot, Hart, and Spears (admittedly, the last two are huge question marks still, but they at least have some potential to fill a major league role if not a big one) is a pretty solid return for the shells of players that the Cubs have sent them.

The Pie deal is kind of separate from the rest, and we'll see how that goes. The rest is the Cubs giving up broken down players with little value (Sosa, Patterson, Bynum) and Hendry seems to be pretty good at scouting the Orioles system to get at least intriguing options.

My memory is a bit hazy, but werent Pie and Hill the guys who Hendry didnt want to give up for Brian Roberts last year? And now it appears as though they'll both be in Baltimore by opening day, and all we'll have to show for it is yeat another middle reliever/spot starter and a player to be named later. Oh good.

I remember when we could've got talent for Pie and Hill and everyone wanted them..But Hendry said they were untouchable..Now we practically have to beg someone to take them for minor league nobodys..Ooops, Sorry, I just went back a page and seen you guys already posted it..

Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun reports that the Orioles are looking to acquire Cubs lefty Rich Hill. Hill is out of options, limiting his value. Zrebiec notes that Hill could benefit from a reunion with Rick Kranitz, his former Triple A pitching coach.

An industry source told Zrebiec that it's a "strong possibility" that Hill will end up with the Orioles. Apparently the Cubs would receive a player to be named later in return, the value of whom would hinge on Hill's success in Baltimore. The Mariners have also shown interest, but the O's are believed to be in the lead at this point. Hill, 28, walked 18 in 19.2 innings last year before his demotion to the minors. He had a nice run for the Cubs in 2006-07.

Hill was the Cubs #3 starter going into last season and Pie was the opening day CF'er. And even if Hendry had some crystal ball to see that both these guys would flame out I don't know that there is any evidence that MacPhail was willing to make the trade but Hendry didn't want to give them up.

So basically, this means that if Hill does good there, we get something decent, but if he sucks up the joint, we get garbage? Thats the dumbest thing Ive ever heard. How about I go out and buy a lottery ticket, and how much I pay hinges on if I win. Just keep the damn guy, and if he sucks, let him go. If Baltimore still wants him then, more power to them.

Seriously, now that Hendrys once bottomless pit of money is all but evaporated, hes showing his true colors.

And I remember when Soto really sucked and most people didn't even believe he was worthy of protection on the 40 man roster. Funny thing with young players, some wind up good and some don't.

So you think those 6 weeks of spring training are going to pretty much tell the tale, huh?

it's a guy whose control pretty much disappeared overnight, so yeah, 6 weeks probably could tell the tale.

What tale would it tell? That he found his control during spring training and could lose it "overnight" again? The Cubs have obviously seen a lot of him over the last 12 months between spring training / MLB / AAA / winter league and if there was something they were confident they could fix and that it would stick they would have done it by now and would not be looking to move him.

rich hill hasnt done anything in a long, long time. what happens if we keep him thru ST, and he still can't throw strikes? we cut him, and get nothing. the question that you must answer if youre jim hendry is this... what's more likely, that rich will continue to be a terrible, terrible pitcher who cant find the zone, or that he'll suddenly remember how? i'm going with the former. and i think hendry is wise to at least get something rather than nothing.

It's risk/reward. What's the benefit to trading away Hill? You get a low A reliever. Even if there's a 5% chance that Hill can contribute something this year, that's a better bet than the PTBNL turning into anything.

i'd say it's much more likely that the PTBNL helps the cubs than rich hill ever would. as hendry said himself, rich had his shot and he blew it. he blew it pretty badly.

So how long are you going to carry him on the roster this year hoping that the light comes on and he contributes?

They're trading him because they have to. He has no options.

And yeah, why would it hurt to give him a shot in ST and see if he can find it? If he does, then you put him on the opening day roster either as a starter or reliever. If he ends up falling apart again a few weeks later, dump him then. What could it hurt? You're not really risking anything.

Hendry is likely thinking beyond the PTBNL to opening another spot on the roster, which may give the team some flexibility to bring aboard another player, etc. He's clearly not finished tinkering.
