Williamson was old for the New York Penn League last year, but he mowed down hitters there (34/5 K/BB in 22.2 IP). He also did well in a couple Sally League appearances at the end of the year(8/0 K/BB in 6.1 IP). Anyone with more info? He's a big guy at 6-5, but I wonder if he had an injury that kept his innings down in 2007 and 2008.

This is his draft report:

Hank Williamson RHP So. R-R 6-5 205 San Jacinto JC Houston (Lamar)

SCOUTING REPORT: Williamson attended Rice as a freshman and did not pitch, but got everyone’s attention with a solid mid-90s fastball during fall practice after he transferred to San Jac. He became the ace on a talent-laden Gators pitching staff, going 7-3, 2.68 with 68 strikeouts in 89 innings. He’s been more steady at 89-93 mph this spring. His secondary pitches are a split-finger, which shows quality life at times, and a developing slider. Scouts still consider Williamson projectable and a work-in-progress, and would like to see a better breaking ball. He’s signed to go to Lamar next year, where he could blossom.

This is a very good trade for the Cubs, IMO.

Man, Pie going to Baltimore hurts me. Now I will be stuck with a bunch of Pie autos that will never sell. OH well, guess they go next to the Mark Prior cads, LOL.

Brilliant. Everyone is a (bad) comedian.

To actually answer the question.......

who cares, just as long as he is wearing a Padres uniform by the time pitchers and catchers report.

whats olsen throw??

FB, SL, CH

FB 87-90

SL 79-82

CH 80-83

Nothing special FB, best pitch is his slider, his change-up is a token pitch to RH'ers. If he develops confidence and the change-up, he could become a starter & if not, he projects as a situational lefty.

I like this deal even if we don't land Peavy. Nice job by Jimbo here, but I sincerely doubt this move was made without Peavy in mind.

Let's get the new owners already.

Don't the Cubs have a scout with a lot of connections to Lamar? The Cubs have drafted a sizable number of guys out of there in recent years, including Micah Hoffpauir and a few current minor leaguers.

Lamar probably had nothing to do with this one, Scouts seen Williamson at San Jacinto's fall games/scout day. Yeah, the cubs have drafted several guys out of Lamar but I don't see the correlation of this one since he was drafted by the O's. I'm sure Hendry/Wilken had the '07 draft report and whomever was responsible for covering the NY/Penn league for the Cubs last year.

Step 3 is finally complete!!!

Step 1: Trade DeRosa for pitching prospects: CHECK

Step 2: Trade Marquis to free up cash: CHECK

Step 3: Trade Pie for Garrett Olson: CHECK

Step 4: Trade Ronny Cedeno and Luis Vizcaino for Aaron Heilman: within a week

Step 5: Trade Heilman, Olson, Vitters, Stevens and Wuertz for Peavy: within 2 weeks

There is NO way we complete ANY of these steps without getting Peavy! We have NO USE for pitching prospects, we have NO USE for Garrett Olson. No room for these guys anyways. Plus Cedeno needs to go.

This is a good trade. Olson is a live arm and Williamson has potential. I think pie will eventually figure it out but that wasnt going to happen here. Whether we parlay some of these pitching prospects into Peavy or another good pitcher or are just restoking the farm this is a good deal.

That doesn't make sense. You always needs prospects in your system for depth and for other trades later on. How can you say there is "no way" that this stuff wouldn't have happened if it weren't related to Peavy? The reasons are pretty obvious. DeRosa and Marquis were traded to free up payroll for Bradley and Pie was traded because he was out of options.

Could this stuff be related to Peavy? Sure, but I don't see how you are acting like there is no way this stuff would have happened anyways. I

really woudln't bet on Peavy. I think Hendry is about done.

Teams who are expected to compete and win their division don't just trade their starters for prospects. They don't make a bunch of moves to have 30 pitchers on their team. With this trade we have no room for like 4 pitchers on our team. Guys like Guzman, Hart, Wuertz... Peavy is coming.
