There is NO way we complete ANY of these steps without getting Peavy! We have NO USE for pitching prospects, we have NO USE for Garrett Olson. No room for these guys anyways. Plus Cedeno needs to go.

That doesn't make sense. You always needs prospects in your system for depth and for other trades later on. How can you say there is "no way" that this stuff wouldn't have happened if it weren't related to Peavy? The reasons are pretty obvious. DeRosa and Marquis were traded to free up payroll for Bradley and Pie was traded because he was out of options.

Could this stuff be related to Peavy? Sure, but I don't see how you are acting like there is no way this stuff would have happened anyways. I

really woudln't bet on Peavy. I think Hendry is about done.

Teams who are expected to compete and win their division don't just trade their starters for prospects. They don't make a bunch of moves to have 30 pitchers on their team. With this trade we have no room for like 4 pitchers on our team. Guys like Guzman, Hart, Wuertz... Peavy is coming.

Again, there were other reasons for those trades besides just getting prospects. DeRosa had to be traded to free up payroll. Pie HAD to be traded because he was out of options and you're not going to get major league proven talent for him. Olson was the best we were going to get, regardless of the fact that he's a prospect.

Sure this could all be related to Peavy, but you need to stop acting like it's a sure thing and that there is no way Hendry would have done it without plans of him. The reasons are pretty obvious. I just explained them to you.

I like this trade, we were not going to get anything else for him after spring training. Hopefully, Olson can develop.

There has been complaining about getting more pitching, but we really needed starting depth at the major league level. Samardzija and Gaudin aren't good as the only options when Harden/Zambrano/Dempster/Marshall goes down.

so is the shine off of Adam Jones already, or is someone moving to a corner OF spot?

The early news out of Baltimore is that Pie will be the starting LF with Luke Scott moving to DH.

So, say we don't get Peavy -- whether JH is trying or not -- how does trade affect the team?

Someone mentioned Olsen has options, is this true?

Is he the 5th starter -- the very day Lou basically hands that to Marshall?

His stats don't look great, but at a glance, he can be Marquis-esque at a lower price...

They had no room for Pie.

Olson has 1 more option, I doubt he'll beat out Marshall for that 5th spot and it'll be interesting as far as who'll replace Harden if he misses extended time in '09, Olson might compete against Samardzija, Gaudin, or Atkins as a darkhorse.

Olson indeed has 1 option to use if they need it.

I doubt he becomes the 5th starter after his dismal year last year. They'll likely either send him to AAA to start and wait for a pitching injury or let him acclimate to the majors in the bullpen.

His upside is probably around Marquis (or maybe slightly better) but to get close to him this year would be a very nice step forward for Olson.

I think his upside is better than Marquis, but if he can post Marquis-like peripherals this season, it would be a positive. He's still young enough to grow into a #2-3 starter.

too much trouble with the law.

I think what you probably mean is his expected outcome (the sum of the probability-weighted outcomes) is Jason Marquis. Since his "upside" (or highest possible value) is much, much higher than Marquis. That's like saying Pie's "upside" is Mark Kotsay.

Overall, I suppose Hendry could have done worse. I still think the best option would have been to keep him around as a 5th outfield over Gathright, but hey. Given that Lou and Jim didn't feel that was a good idea, this is probably about as good of trade as we could have gotten.

If Pie had ever gotten a real shot and fell on his face, I wouldn't mind this trade so much.

As is, I'm pretty pissed at Lou.

Even without assuming a Peavy trade, this makes the Cubs better. They got probably as much value out of Pie as they possibly could have.

It does make the Cubs better right now, since Pie had no place on the roster, but that's not what Rob was saying. Lou never gave Pie an extended opportunity to prove himself one way or the other.

ill be shocked if pie is as good as kotsay was early in this decade. that's no knock on pie.

Very true, I meant the current version of Kotsay....

agree, and Baltimore is the only team I could see in the AL that would do this deal.

While Olson was in the minors where did he rank on the O's prospect lists?

Some at OH seem to think he may be pretty good in the future. Maine comparisons and such.

6th in '07 and 6th in '06 in below avg. farm systems.

Similar FB velos, but Maine had 4 ML pitches while Olson has 2 ML pitches.

Thanks, just checked out his minor league numbers and they were incredible. It looks like a swap of two players that excelled at every level of the minors, but have yet to figure it out in the majors. I like the potential in this trade.

Excellent news. Now we're finally rid of those "Felix Pie's teh awesome defense that I am totally exaggerating can carry his piece of **** bat" posts.

Plus, now the Orioles now have two toolsy stooges with no strike zone discipline who won't ever amount to much. Now all they have to do is trade with the Phillies for Greg Golson and their JOURNEY TO THE DARK SIDE WILL BE COMPLETE.
