Oklahoma beating Mizzou would help too, as that would likely knock Illinois into the Rose and open up another at-large slot (Purdue would slide into the Big Ten's last bowl tie-in)
Much less likely to occur, but Pittsburgh beating West Virginia would do the same thing.

According to the Dallas Morning News, KU is in the Fiesta no matter what happens this weekend between OU/MU.

If MU wins, KU goes and plays ASU or UofI in the Fiesta Bowl. (MU to NC game, OU to Cotton)

If MU loses, KU goes and plays OU in the Fiesta Bowl. (MU to the Cotton Bowl)

I'm as big a KU homer as it gets, and I'd love to see us slip into a BCS game, but Mizzou would be getting the screw job of all screw jobs if the second scenario happens. That would mean they would be passed over for a BCS game in favor of not only one, but TWO teams they beat head-to-head (KU & UofI), one of which also has more losses.

It's pretty much impossible to justify. Don't get me wrong--part of me would find it hilarious, because I love watching horrible things happen to Missouri and its fans. But the objective part of me finds the thing pretty appalling.

what an idiotic system.

these conference championship games really screw things up.

The search committee for the next CEO of the Green Bay Packers selected Northwestern AD Mark Murphy as their choice. He may end up not being confirmed by the board, but I still feel the need to swear loudly...

Horrible news for NU.

Clue me in then. Under Murphy, Northwestern's big sports (Football and Basketball) have languished. They still aren't competitive in the Big 10 really at all, and there doesn't seem to be much of chance that they will be. So what makes him a good choice to run the Packers?

He's only been at Northwestern for about 4.5 years, but he may be one of the best we've had. Plenty of credit should go to our president for his commitment to sports, but Murphy made great strides in the non-revenue sports. The 3 straight championships of the women's lacrosse team nearly didn't happen. After the 2nd one, I believe, head coach Amonte Hiller was very close to moving back east to Maryland to coach at her alma mater. Instead, Murphy was able to get her to stay when it looked like all hope was lost and signed her to a nice contract. He followed that up by spearheading the reconstruction of the lakeside field for soccer, lacrosse, and field hockey (it's beautiful, by the way), which has coincided with the re-birth of the men's soccer program. He did a similar job with the women's softball team, making sure the coaching staff stayed put and invested money to renovate the softball field after their back-to-back WCWS appearances.

In regards to football, he made a very tough but ultimately correct choice for the long term in naming Fitz as Walker's replacement. The two major criticisms of what has gone on over the past few years is the retention of two of the long-time assitant coaches, but that may change this winter, and the home football attendance. The attendance problem is much greater a challenge than one man can face. The basketball team isn't doing well, but recruiting efforts have certainly improved under his watch and he helped put in money into rebuilding the Welsh-Ryan Arena locker rooms, which was long overdue.

I don't know exactly how those skills are going to translate into his potential role of CEO of the Packers since I can't really say what his day-to-day duties would be. However, he has a wide range of experiences as outlined in that article, including a significant background in law and negotiation with the NLFPA. He certainly isn't the most experienced candidate in the job search, which included Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany, but he's a very smart guy.

i thought there was a rule forbidding two teams from the same conference playing in a bowl game, save the NC game.

I know they avoid rematches as much as possible, but Oklahoma and Kansas didn't actually play, so that wouldn't be an issue there.

I can see a OU/Kansas and a Georgia/LSU bowl scenario since they never played each other in the regular season. I'd enjoy that as much as the Michigan/OSU thing many wanted last year.

Why must the Fiesta Bowl choose Kansas should Missouri lose? Why not choose some other at-large team not from the Big 12 and let Missouri go to another BCS bowl game.

The Fiesta can choose whoever they want. They apparently want Kansas is what the article is saying.

Yeah, but I think the Fiesta Bowl will wise up and select either USC or ASU as the other at large. Keep in mind that if Oklahoma wins, the Rose Bowl will select first since they'll lose OSU. Then the Orange Bowl will have their at-large selection. Finally the Fiesta Bowl will select. Missouri might already be selected by that time, and if they are, the Fiesta Bowl cannot select Kansas.

I think it's simply rematches that are forbidden, not sure. Since we never played this year, that doesn't come into play. Three cheers for imbalanced scheduling! I know you're already a big fan of it. :wink:

The writer claims that the BCS games who select before the Fiesta are much more likely to pass over Mizzou in favor of more attractive choices. (Example: Rose takes USC and UI to maintain Pac-10/Big-10 politics. Orange takes, I dunno, Georgia and somebody?) The writer thinks the Fiesta will pass on ASU because having the local team will hurt the economy.

Orange usually has the ACC champ plus an at large

USC will be in the Rose Bowl unless half their team dies of bird flu. The good half.

I went through this before, but will again as a reminder:

If OU beats MU and all other favorites win:

Rose = USC vs. Illinois/Georgia

Orange = VA Tech vs. Georgia/Mizzou/ASU

Fiesta = OU vs. KU/ASU/Illinois

Sugar = LSU vs. Hawaii

If MU beats OU and all other favorites win:

Rose = USC vs. OSU

Orange = Va Tech vs. Georgia

Fiesta = KU vs. ASU/Illinois(slight chance of ASU vs. Illinois but highly unlikely it seems)

Sugar = LSU vs. Hawaii

The SEC title game is meaningless BCS wise, cause whoever wins goes to Sugar, whoever loses goes non-BCS.

If I'm short on work after the market closes, I'll go through the other scenarios.
