btw - I still would prefer to have received a couple B prospects.

Would you have paid money to receive a couple B or C prospects?

that's my problem with it too. it's just like the maddux/izturis trade...dump someone i don't care about dumping, but what we're getting back is even worse.

For about $2M the Tigers converted a utility player into a starting OF. IMO this deal helps the Tigers a lot more than the Cubs.

Well, based on his season, I don't see Infante getting much more than $1.5M in arby. Jones was due $5.5 + signing bonus and we're apparently only paying for the signing bonus.

So it seems we're saving $4M to me.

Okay $4M savings makes this a worthwhile deal. I agree it would have been better to save the $1.5M that Infante will get in arby and just take some minor league roster fillers instead.

if money weren't a factor, would people rather have Cedeno/Theriot/Fontenot or Matsui/Infante?

Money not being a factor, it would be a push. With money being a factor, the farmhands win out by a longshot.

You aren't going to give us a good option? I would rather stick with what the Cubs have.

good news, we're one step closer to hendry's dream of a lineup in which we have 8 players that can be randomly assigned to any position in the field.

if only jose oquendo were available...

Fernando Vina still looks in playing shape. I love the dreamy facial hair.

What do y'all think the chances are that Hendry might make Infante part of some trade package to acquire more of a impact player?

I'm holding on to hope that it's true because if not I owe BbB a quarter.

He'd have to be a throw-in as he doesn't really have much trade value, except to Hendry. He's basicaly a part time utility player.

The only saving grace is that he is relatively young.

Guys, we freed up like $2M, we aren't talking about a ton of money here.

If the suggestion that Hendry is paying only Jacque's signing bonus, the savings are closer to $3.5.

Infante's not winning $2.0 in arbitration. Punch Drunk may wind up giving it to him, but an arbiter won't.

$6.33 (Jacque) - $1.33 (payment to Detroit) - $1.5 (Infante) = $3.5

Sorry...I think this is correct

I was just thinking that.I don't know what the package would be, unless JH isnt going to go after Kaz and that was a ploy and we have Kosuke and Arod inbound

Infante actually has not been all that terrible away from Comerica. I think he may be hindered from playing there. Maybe the move to the NL will help. Also, what is his range factor at SS, 2B, and CF?

That's actually a very good point about the home away splits. Here are the splits for his career:

home- .233/.278/.343

away- .271/.316/.425

Take him to the NL and away from Comerica, and you may get much closer to those away numbers for a full season. I'd take that from a middle infield option. It's not good, but it's around average for a middle infielder.

Speaking of unproductive Tigers moving to Chicago, did the Cubs ever make any official move with Monroe this offseason?

Nothing official, just little snippets like this:

Monroe, like Floyd, doesn't figure to be in the Cubs' 2008 plans. With Soriano in left and perhaps Felix Pie or Jacque Jones in center, the only position open for either veteran is right field or fourth outfielder. The Cubs want to look elsewhere for a right-field option, and Monroe and Floyd haven't thrived the way Ward has when used in a utility role.

Also one good thing about Infante is that he can hit left-handers much better than right-handers, which at least fits into what the Cubs need.

It seems to me that people want to adjust both pitchers and hitters numbers higher when moving from the AL to NL. I'm not sure why moving him to the NL will help at all. Perhaps getting out of Comerica will make his numbers look a little better. As for how that would matchup vs average middle infielders:

Average NL 2b .272/.341/.418

Average NL SS .272/.336/.418

He'd be a SLG improvement, but a bigger OBP liability.

It should be noted he does not hit much better vs left-handers.

Career stats:

.257/.301/.387 vs RHP

.245/.290/.382 vs LHP

I stand corrected on the hitting vs left-handers thing. I thought I was looking at career stats, but I somehow had switched back over to just looking at this years stats.

I think people tend to believe the talent level is simply better in the AL right now, both pitching and hitting. Almost certainly the pitching in the AL Central has been better over the last few years than the pitching in the NL Central will be.
