Bruce Levine reported on ESPN 1000 that the Cubs and Tigers were discussing a Jones for Omar Infante deal at the meetings and the two teams plan to stay in contact about a deal. I'd probably rather just keep Jones that bring in another crappy middle-infielder.

What the hell? Matsui and Infante? What did DeRosa do to piss-off Lou and Hendry? Using him as a supersub is just not smart.

I just don't get it.

I think all these rumors cannot be good for the future of Ronny Cedeno as a Cub. I think he's dealt over the winter. I wouldn't be surprised if Murton and Eric Patterson are traded as well.

If it allows them to do something with Jones' 5M and stops them from signing Matsui, I'm fine with the swap.

Jones' 5M pisses you off that much? I would rather sit Jones on the bench and pay the 5M then drag Infante into your already overcrowded infield. If they wanted Infante, why not have kept Izturis?

I agree that this is bad news for Cedeno. Maybe Cedeno slept with Sandberg's wife, that is why he must go!?!

What trade value does Ronny even have at this point? hendry would have been wise to deal him when his value was highest. He held on too long again.

It doesn't piss me off at all, but if we have 8M to spend this offseason (which is what we've speculated) and for example, Tejada costs 13M, I have no problem getting rid of Jones to allow us the financial flexibility to improve significantly.

Also, Infante costs nothing and will be a backup. Izturis cost 5M.

Infante made 1.3m last season, so if we just swapped contracts we would only net 3.7m. I don't know if that would be worth having Infante waste a roster spot. I seriously think the best move would be to make the trade and then promptly release Infante or see if any team is stupid enough to give us a prospect for him.

Besides that, why would the Tigers want Jones? Isn't their outfield already clogged with granderson surrouded a multitude of middle of the road outfielders and Sheff as the DH? What are they going to do with him? I don't see them adding salary just to get jones. Unless Hendry is going to pay half Jones' money and that only makes the deal look even worse!

Infante is certainly nothing special, but his stats have been significantly suppressed by Comerica over the last three seasons:

Comerica - .221/.254/.317/.571

Elsewhere - .274/.315/.438/.753

He's also an option as a RHH CF.

It just seems like Hendry once again is focusing on something asinine like getting a bunch of fast guys on the team instead of getting hitters who can actually get on base. It's either getting a lead-off hitter, or getting guys who can play multiple positions, or getting guys who can steal bases, or getting guys with "5-tools". It's never about getting guys who can actually hit and get on base.

They see him as bridge to Maybin (letting him work some things out at in the minors) or a LH option as a platoon?

Magglio is sorta good, they might think about keeping him in RF next year. Lets pencil him in.

Left field right now is Thames (who the Tigers seem to not like) and Maybin/Clevlen who aren't ready to take over, and Rayburn, whos more of a utility guy.

So, the Tigers want jones in LF.

The key number is 400. That was Jacque's slugging percentage last year. Below average even for a CF. Who are you expecting us to be able to get for him?

I don't expect to get anything good for him. That's why I'd rather just keep him as a backup plan if Pie falls flat on his face.

I was actually interested in Infante a couple years back when I thought he had a chance to blossom into an above average hitting MIF. Now, not so much.

yeah but he was too good then for a middle infielder for hendry to be interested. now that he looks like a jose macias with power type player, hendrys all over him.

True.

I'd much rather take a couple of "B" level minor leaguers and hope one steps up.

actually infante isnt a terrible move. i'd liken it to be a similar move to the michael barrett move. infante is talented, but hasnt reached 300 abs since he died at age 23. hes no worse than theriot and has the upside to be a useful major leaguer.

if i had a choice between opening the season with theriot as our starter at shortstop or infante, id take infante by a huge margin.
