actually infante isnt a terrible move. i'd liken it to be a similar move to the michael barrett move. infante is talented, but hasnt reached 300 abs since he died at age 23. hes no worse than theriot and has the upside to be a useful major leaguer.

if i had a choice between opening the season with theriot as our starter at shortstop or infante, id take infante by a huge margin.

True, but I see Infante and Cedeno as nearly the same player at this point. And we already have Ronny. And he's cheaper.

I'm waiting for the day when we will see trade rumors or speculation that is actually worth getting excited about. Jones for Infante? Marquis for Winn? Signing K. Matsui? Jim Hendry has lost it.

but hell never get the chance. infante might. infantes probably safer than cedeno though. also in this deal if the Tigers pick up all of Jones contract why the heck not?

How is Infantes D?

Infante seems to be similar to Mark DeRosa. Perhaps DeRosa is on the move and Infante replaces him

\

How in the hell are they similar? Infante wont walk, cant hit, to replace DeRosa with Infante would be one of the most ignorant things Hendrys done.

He was talking defensively, I think. DeRosa was a big suprise last year. He turned out to be worth his contract. Many thought Cubs overpaid, but he overpreformed.

No fair, you stole my comparison before I had a chance to use it.

Infante could be a worthwhile gamble, but does anyone else think his value isn't quite at what Jones' is?

I'd rather keep Ronny and convince him that Wrigley is actually Des Moines or the VWL. I'd hope for a better return on Jones.

I knew Hendry was desperate, but unloading Jones for a dead guy? That's pretty bad.

What's even more surprising is that he's had any ABs since then.

Posted
yeah but he was too good then for a middle infielder for hendry to be interested. now that he looks like a jose macias with power type player, hendrys all over him.

Infante is a known quantity now. Hendry's job is at stake. He won't be dabbling in unknowns this year.

If you can dump Jones and his salary on the Tigers, I'd take Infante as a reserve infielder, but NOT as a starter, yikes. Using him as a reserve though, you clear out roughly $3.5MM in salary and fill a need. Infante would allow the Cubs to bail on Fontenot, and as bad as Infante is, I'd take him over Fontenot all day long.

However, you can bet this would be one of Hendry's lousy "make-good" trades. He'd eat part of Jones salary to "make it a wash," and that would take away any advantage from doing this. I'll give up Jones to clear out some salary space, but if there is no salary reduction and I'm swapping Jones for Infante straight-up essentially, well.....that's just stupid.

Please explain to me how Infante is anything like Barrett? Barrett's bat wouldn't play at a corner infield postion and he was athletic enough to move to catcher. Infante's bat isn't even that good for a middle infielder and he's played some in CF.

I don't see the comparison.

The comparison has nothing at all to do with defense or the positions they play.

Help me out then. I still don't see the compairson. MB was one of the best offensive catchers in the NL. Infante has the potential to be one of the best offensive SS/CF/2d in the NL?

The comparison isn't to Barrett as a Cub, it's to Barrett as an Expo. Infante and Barrett are both guys who were highly regarded as potential offensive assets at important defensive positions. They both had initial struggles that resulted in their never getting a real opportunity, thus deflating their values below where they should be. Hendry saw Barrett as a guy who could come back and be an asset, and it's possible he'll do the same with Infante.

If Infante could find Barrett-like production in the next couple of years, he'd be a steal at the current price
