I'm with Cuse on this one. This might be a prelude to a bigger trade. What is Tampa's infield situation like? He could be spun to them in a Crawford deal. :-k

Not a huge fan of this deal right now, but I wanna try and hold my judgement to see how things pan out. Infante was playing in a pitcher's park, and he has potential and is still young. Also, this hopefully clears the way toward signing Fukudome. This may end up being a bad trade, but I want to see the immediate consequences first.

And this isn't Hendry's worst trade.

I keep thinking Baltimore wants a replacement for Tejada....

I HIGHLY doubt this guy was signed to take over DeRosa's spot. He will either take over for Theriot or be a really expensive backup.

No chance he takes over DeRosa's spot. Matsui will take over DeRosa's spot.

Even Hendry can't be that dumb to replace DeRo with Matsui.

On the surface I don't care for this move, but I will wait and see what else happens. What if they wanted a replacement utility type and to free up cash for trading Theriot+Muton/Marshall+??? for a legit upgrade at SS or a stronger OF bat, or even just simply to offset whatever cash we might have to eat in dealing Marquis? I'll reserve judgement for the time being.

From Rotoworld:

Jacque Jones-OF-Tigers Nov. 12 - 1:14 pm et

Tigers acquired outfielder Jacque Jones from the Cubs for infielder-outfielder Omar Infante.

They're also getting some cash to help cover the $6.33 million Jones is owed next season. There's little difference offensively between Jones and free agents like Geoff Jenkins, Shawn Green and Luis Gonzalez. What made this worth doing for Detroit is Jones' defense in left field. They've had little use for Infante the last two years anyway. A Jones-Marcus Thames platoon should generate at least 30 homers next season. Jones, though, won't be a particularly good bet in AL-only leagues while sitting versus lefties and hitting low in the order against righties.

Omar Infante-2B-Cubs Nov. 12 - 1:13 pm et

Cubs acquired infielder-outfielder Omar Infante from the Tigers for outfielder Jacque Jones.

Infante showed a lot of promise by hitting .264/.317/.449 as a 22-year-old regular in 2004, but he slumped the next year, causing the Tigers to pick up Placido Polanco, and he's struggled to find his niche ever since. The change of scenery should do him some good. The Cubs could use him as Felix Pie's platoon partner if they go with the youngster as their center fielder against right-handers. However, it's entirely possible that Infante isn't through changing teams this winter. This just gives the Cubs more flexibility as they continue to shop for middle-infield and outfield help.

I cant wait for Hendrys comments after the trade..His positive BS about how he thinks it a great trade..

" We wanted more speed and this guy givs us that, he provides what were looking for and can really help this club"

There has to be a reference to the World Champion Red Sox. I.e., "..he gives us speed, like Ellsbury.." Or, "he's versatile, like Youkilis.."

Dont forget:

"He drove in runs while striking out over 100 times!"

"He was an great player in 2004!"

"We felt it was time to move Jacque some place where he will be happy. We like Jacque as a person, we just felt it was the right time to part ways."

Way too few "obviously"s in there.

LOL!

$50,000 on the under on that one, please.

Thames hit 18 in less than half a season last year. Jones will probably not hit only 5 HRs again next year.

And count me as somebody who would non-tender Infante. I know it's not realistic, but it's what I'd do.

Ronny Cedeno is now in Matt Murton territory. Just trade the poor kid.

If the cash consideration is merely the portion of Jacque's signing bonus that is due to be paid this coming January, then it's not objectionable.

i probably would have waited to make sure i got fukudome before i traded jones.

Maybe they have already agreed to a deal and are waiting until Wednesday (the first day he can be signed) to announce it?

Actually teams cannot discuss money with free agents other than their own until tomorrow.

Does that count for him too since he isn't any particular "team's" free agent?

I don't think that's true with free agents who didn't end the year with a major league team.

I've cracked the case!

Why Hendry traded for Infante:

The Venezuela native...posted a .413 batting average (19-for-46) with runners in scoring position in 2007.

Is that straight from the Cubs press release? or the Muskat article?
