this organization's infatuation with marginal middle infielders blows my mind. i didn't read the whole thread, but did they take all of JJ's contract? If we don't sign Fukudome, our OF is going to somehow be worse than it was this year.

$6.33 (Jacque) - $1.33 (payment to Detroit) - $1.5 (Infante) = $3.5

Here's a thought if the Cubs can't sign Fukodome. Hendry's supposedly been enamored with RF Shawn Green in the past. Green's stats against right-handed pitching in 2007 (approx. 360 plate appearances): .326 .383 .482 .865. Hendry can probably sign him to a 1 year deal for around $4M and let Murton play RF against left-handed pitching.

That would be an incredibly depressing offseason. Green's numbers vs RH last year may be a bit flukish, he didn't hit that way in 2006. And it was basically just a few extra singles falling in, as he didn't hit for any power.

And there is no guarantee the OF will be any better WITH Fukudome either. I think the expectations for this guy are getting a little high. None of us really know what he could do yet.

We know what he could do. Whether or not he actually accomplishes what he's capable of is the question. I don't think expectations are really getting all that high. Nobody has said he's going to contend for MVP or lead the team in OPS. Most are saying he should be a solid bat, that's it.

Does anybody realize jacque jones carried us into the playoffs last year?...the guy had clutch hit after clutch hit and his defense in center was fantastic. Hopefully this is a move in order to make room for Carl Crawford, otherwise I'm not buying it we already have Derosa, Theriot, Cedeno, Fontenot, Eric Patterson, and now Infante. Erroneous.

We are reading some different posts then. I have seen many pretty much pinning the hopes off the offseason, and 2008 on his signing. If he even comes to the states, and if the Cubs give him, I hope he's great.

He is an unknown to a degree at this point though.

I've asked this a couple times, but each time it was as an aside within another post so I wanted to ask it again.

Does anyone remember who we were going to receive back from the Marlins in that trade that almost went down this summer?

When you end up with Shawn Green as your starting left fielder, something has gone horribly wrong. This would be a huge step int he wrong direction. Too old, too slow.

It was basically nothing wasn't it...I didn't think any players were involved and I think we were picking up "most" of the contract.

It was a LHP from their low-A team but no names were given (there were a couple LHP on that team including one interesting arm).

I don't think that was ever revealed. It was the fact that Florida wanted the Cubs to pick up an inordinate amount of the contract that caused the talks to fall apart.

Single-A pitcher Graham Taylor.

Was it Taylor for sure?

I guess I have to disagree. In over 1250 plate appearances against right-handed pitching over the last 3 years (2005-2007), Green's OPS is .841. I'll take that production for $4M. I'm talking one year deal here.

It's not a surprise that people are pinning their hopes on Fukudome when other potential targets for the OF includes guys like Shawn Green. I think most people recognize Fukudome isn't going to be a superstar here and his numbers will take a hit but he's more competent than a guy like Shawn Green now.

Look it never happened. Maybe because the Marlins didn't want to part with Taylor. But that was the name reported.

Cubs swap Jones for Infante, pay Jones Salary - $1M, board jeers

Cubs swap Jones for Infante, Tigers pay all of Jones salary (we pay remaining signing bonus), board (jeers | cheers | says, "meh, I would have rather had prospects")

I think it'll be important to grade Hendry's body of work for this offseason as a whole, rather than one piece at a time. If trading Jones for Infante means that the Cubs can truly upgrade the offense, then I'm all in favor of it. I still that Hendry's put too much money into marginal deals (See: Blanco, Henry and Marquis, Jason), but it's nice to see him dump Jones, all things considered.
