I like this deal. Now we sign Fukudome for CF while Infante takes over Fontenot's spot.

Hopefully this ends the Matsui speculation.

Or Hendry uses the $3.5 - $4MM to fit Matsui into the budget on a 3/12MM deal?

I just had the scary thought that Hendry might have this line-up envisioned...

C- Soto

1b- Lee

2b- Infante

SS- Theriot

3b-Ramirez

LF- Soriano

CF- Pie

RF- DeRosa

=D> That line-up = about 70 wins.

I think that's more than 70 wins...it would probably be a winning season, though probably not playoff caliber.

there is no way that's a winning taem. that team would be awfully lucky to win 75. or they would just be awful.

It's not that huge of a drop from this year's team. The differences are Floyd/Murton to Infante, Jones/Pie to just Pie, and the 2007 catchers.

Infante is probably around a 100 point drop from Floyd/Murton (maybe 75, maybe 150). Pie probably won't be much worse than Jones and Pie combined to do in 2007 (because Jones had a down year and Pie was absolutely awful in his time last year). Soto is an upgrade over the 2007 catchers.

So the lineup looks awful, but it's really not that much worse than the average lineup in 2007. With another good pitching year and another weak NL Central, they would be around 80-85 wins again with that lineup.

Good point about Fontenot. I don't think his name has even been brought up. After that good first month, he was just terrible the rest of the year. Maybe Infante is being brought in to fill Fontenot's role. I would have no problem with that at all.

I would much rather see them spend $350,000 on Fontenot as the 6th IF than $2m on Infante.

What if it's just 1.5 mil? I'd rather have someone who has a shot at being good, Fontenot, over a full season, would be the worst hitter in the league.

Yes, and it's wishful thinking to believe that Infante will play second-fiddle to Theriot/Cedeno or maybe even DeRosa following a Hendry trade(see Fontenot's role). The kid will play, at least initially.

What do you mean by full season? As a starter? I'd have no interest in either starting. However, given Fontenot's numbers vs RHP this year, .297/.358/.423, I would think he'd be able to at least come close, if not exceed, Infante's career .257/.301/.387 line, as a part-time player.

I think a lot of people will end up eating their words about Infante. I can see him playing SS v. RHP and CF v. LHP. They sign Fukudome as extra insurance for CF(they like Theriot enough not to want/need extra SS insurance), and Murton is a failsafe against Fukudome falling on his face as an offensive RF.

Soriano

Fukudome

Lee

Ramirez

DeRosa

Pie/Soto

Soto/Theriot

Infante

Not awe inspiring, but probably better.

If trading Jones for Infante means that the Cubs can truly upgrade the offense, then I'm all in favor of it. I still that Hendry's put too much money into marginal deals (See: Blanco, Henry and Marquis, Jason), but it's nice to see him dump Jones, all things considered."

Brinoch, I don't know what kind of Cub fan you are coming up with logic and rationality at a time like this. Cub fans must react to every transaction (or rumor) made or not made by Hendry immediately. What kind of world would this be if we waited to see the final result before reacting. Anarchy!

Which words would be eaten? The ones saying he won't play enough to hurt the team, or the ones saying his pathetic out making offense won't help the team?

The only final result of the Hendry era will be once he's fired for incompetence. A major league roster is constantly in flux, every move can have an effect on future moves. Withholding judgement on any one move is not necessary. Any move can and should be critiqued on its own merits. The big picture is obviously what matters most, and the big picture has shown that Hendry's moves have created a barely above .500 overpaid ballclub.

So you think he will be good?

I'm just hoping he doesn't play often enough to hurt the ballclub, because there's virtually no chance he'll be any good.

You can't believe this. He's 25, and he's been at least league average away from his cavernous home park for the last 3 years. It's not a guarantee by any stretch, but to write him off to awful production like he's Jose Macias or something is ignoring the context of his career.

What site did you find those numbers at? I was trying to find that breakdown earlier, but couldn't. Thanks in advance.

Yeah, that's the first place I went. Doesn't have the stats that TT posted though.

I like it. =D>

It's a pretty good deal for the Tigers too. They had 10 different guys play LF and 8 different guys play RF last year. I'm guessing they'll put Jock in LF.
