This move makes no sense. We don't free up that much money, we still may sign Matsui, and Infante will play 2b, ss, and CF? 3 positsions we do not need to worry about backups for at this time?

Is this guy really going to be taking DeRosa, Pie, and possibly Cedeno/Theriot's AB's? Even if this is a precursor to something big, this doesn't help the team at all.

I cant wait for Hendrys comments after the trade..His positive BS about how he thinks it a great trade..

" We wanted more speed and this guy givs us that, he provides what were looking for and can really help this club"

I think this might be Hendry's first step in an offseason of house cleaning with regards to contracts. If he really wants Fukudome, Kuroda, and Matsui that badly, he's going to have to dump some salaries.

I can see DeRosa and Marquis getting the heave-ho if things keep up like this.

There has to be a reference to the World Champion Red Sox. I.e., "..he gives us speed, like Ellsbury.." Or, "he's versatile, like Youkilis.."

Dont forget:

"He drove in runs while striking out over 100 times!"

"He was an great player in 2004!"

"We felt it was time to move Jacque some place where he will be happy. We like Jacque as a person, we just felt it was the right time to part ways."

It appears Infante is not under contract for 08 but is arbi eligible, and he made $1.3mil in 07 but had a mediocre year, so what makes anyone think he will get $2mil in 08? Even if he gets a 20% arbi raise he will make just $1.56mil. The Cubs could end up non-tendering him freeing themselves of most of Jones' $5.5mil and also clearing up a roster space. I'm withholding judgment on this one till all the dust has settled.

I honestly think that Hendry's philosophy on middle infielders is....

Get as many mediocres ones as I can

Hopefully one will have a career year

repeat

Freddie Bynum is waiting for his phone to ring.

In what universe do you trade a starting outfielder for a utility player and then turn around and non tender the utility player?

Sigh, just no way to put rose colored glasses on for this deal. You look at his '04 .766 OPS and think "that would sure be better than Theriot", but looking at his career line and minor league numbers I think we know who the real Omar Infante is. Maybe if he had, ahem, "something" like he might have had in '04 he'd be better, but otherwise I think we're just getting a slightly better Cesar for slightly less cash. Ugh.

I for one love this deal. Infante is a young middle infielder with some upside. Jones is a fourth outfielder who can't throw the ball. We save money with this deal , I don't care who's in center or right it will be an upgrade over Jones.

In a universe where you are trying to free up as much cash as possible to make other moves. Yes, Hendry could have just asked for a prospect in return, but I'm holding out hope Infante will be used in another trade, and if he isn't, the option of non-tendering him is still there.

Do you care who will be at 2nd or ss? Matsui/Infante MI sounds horrible to me, and a downgrade from a possible Cedeno/Theriot/DeRosa MI.

Is that worth getting rid of Jones?

As I said earlier, I would have preferred receiving a couple B prospects rather than Infante. I really wish Hendry would focus on getting prospects in return for his salary dumps.

But this is far from the stupidest move Hendry has ever made.

A strange and distant universe. The industry opinion on Jacque Jones would have to be so incredibly low that the best a team could get for him is the opportunity to non-tender a mediocre backup infielder.

1) Can infante play SS?

2) Will he ever come close to his 04 numbers again?

Just from quoting others in this thread, they say he doesn't have the arm to play SS.

Of course, neither does Ryan Theriot.

True, but I'm not panning for either of them to be the starting SS on opening day.
