NAPLES, Fla. -- The winner of the Daisuke Matsuzaka sweepstakes will be known in the States by Monday, people involved in the discussions told SI.com. While the winning team has been kept quiet, one person in the know suggested there were multiple bids in the $30 million range, and perhaps even a little higher.

The Seibu Lions are expected to accept a posting fee for Matsuzaka that should trump their lofty expectations. ESPN.com reported that the Red Sox bid between $38-45 million, and some competing executives are taking the lack of denial of this story by MLB people as a sign Boston is indeed the high bidder -- even if those figures are slightly off. While industry scuttlebutt had Boston's bid at "close to $40 million,'' one person indicated the reported $38-45 million range was "not correct.'' But if Boston's bid was just a million or two lower than that range, it's still hard to see someone else landing Matsuzaka. It is believed that both the Mets and Yankees bid closer to the $30 million neighborhood.

Japanball.com"]The Seibu Lions will hold a board of directors meeting on

Tuesday morning to discuss whether the club will accept the highest

bid from an as yet undisclosed major league club for Japanese

right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka.

The Lions intend to respond to the offer via the Japanese

baseball commissioner's office by the deadline of 7 a.m. Wednesday

morning (5 p.m. Tuesday EST).

Seems like the Lions are going to take all the allocated time before they make a decision. How long does it take to decide if you're going to accept millions of dollars? It's not like they're going to deny the bid. They're desperate for money.

It might take that long to get all the board of directors together for the meeting.

Looks like we'll find out tonight.

Boston Globe"]The assembled Japanese media here at the annual general managers' meetings have been told this morning that the Seibu Lions' board of directors will meet at 8 p.m. Eastern (Tuesday morning in Japan) to mull over the bids submitted by major league teams to earn the negotiating rights to coveted righthander Daisuke Matsuzaka.

In fact, there is word now from the Japanese press that the Lions plan to hold a press conference at 8 p.m. Eastern.

Major league baseball spokesman Patrick Courtney said that MLB would announce the decision as soon as it was made known to them.

Wow, that is absolutely ridiculous. I just cannot fathom paying that much for one unproven player in the MLB.

They've only spent that much if they actually end up signing him. Could have just been a ploy to keep the Yankees from getting him.

i was under the impression that mlb wasn't going to allow this kind of thing to happen.

Where in the world did Orestes Destrade come from? He randomly popped up on BBTN this year and now he's scooping us on the Matsuzaka bid?
he's been on ESPN Deportes for a while and has also been a regular contributor on XM for at least the last 2 years...other than that i'm not sure of his background

If that is the case I don't understand why every team in the league didn't bid that much.

Every team doesn't sell as many t-shirts as Boston.

I think he meant T-shirt sales over in Japan. I don't think over there it matters too much what team he is on. If Boston has an effect in Japan I retract my earlier statement.

I would be surprised if the Cubs won the bid but at least, if the reports are true, the Yankees didn't win the bid.

Yeah, thats the silver lining in this. I wouldnt have wanted the Cubs to bid in the nieghborhood of 45 mil, but at least the Yankees didnt get him.

You're right, "The Evil Empire" didn't get Matsuzaka, but "The Borg" will. But hey, I kinda hoping he pulls a Beckett, and bombs his first yr in Boston.

$42 million for negotiating rights is completely and utterly stupid. If they sign Drew (per rotoworld) as well, they'll easily spend $100 million in one day. That's ridiculous. I applaud Hendry for not joining this madness.
