If it is truly $51.1 mill for the bidding, then Matsuazaka had better be WORTH every penny. He'd better make the All-Star team, he better win close to 17 games, with an era in the mid to low 3. He better be what people thought Irabu/Nomo were going to be.

Right now, I don't know how well he will adjust to the American League and their WONDERFUL offenses.

So we're probably looking in the range of 3 years (Boras has said many times he only wants a 3 year deal so Matsuzaka can cash in later) worth probably $80 million with the bid money added in. So about $27 million a year for a pitcher? That's just insane.

If I'm Boston, I refuse to sign him to anything but a long-term deal of 5 or 6 years. If Boras refuses, then Boston isn't out anything. You cannot cave in to his demands for a 3 year deal though-like you said, that's just way too much money.

Sorry for my ignorance, but I know the Lions get most/all/part of the posting money. Of the reported $51 mil, how much goes to the Lions and how much to Matsuzaka?

All of that fee goes to the Lions-Matsuzaka now has to go negotiate his own contract with the Red Sox in 30 days.

It all goes to the Lions after Boston and Matsuzaka agree to a contract. The bid was just for the rights to negotiate with Matsuzaka.

$51 million is insane. Simply insane. I really have to wonder if that was a serious offer - the second place team may yet get their chance.

What if the Red Sox offer $50-$70 million over 10 years? Is that not a "serious offer"? Would Bud have grounds to void the bid over that?

This is however how we lose out by having corporate ownership and not just some rich dude. If Cuban owned this team he might have bid 60 just to be safe.

I wonder if the Sox will now low ball since they know the yanks aren't next in line.
There's no "next in line" about it. It's either Boston or back to Japan.

Agreed. Boras/Matsuazaka have NO leverage in the negotions, IMO. If they can't agree then Matsuazaka has to go back to Japan, and Boston get their money back.

My guess is....they will compromise ona 5 yr deal, with an option after the 4th.

A $51 million cover charge just for the opportunity to sit a table with Boras to negotiate a deal for his client's services.

If the Red Sox get him signed the total package is going to cost a heck of a lot more than Zito's opening demand of $105 mil.

Unfathomable.

I had read that if the comish doesn't think Boston made a contract offer in good faith bidding would go to the next team.

Great. Now the Yanks' already insane spending is going to go into overdrive because they've just been so hideously one-upped by their rivals, which will just push the Mets to do something similar on their own scale, which leaves the already gun-shy Cubs left high and dry. Mark my words, we've already seen the pinnacle of the Cubs' moves with the new Aramis deal.

thats what i've been wondering. this could get real interesting. there's no way they offer a contract less than 5 yrs.

I guess we now know why it took so long for the Lions to accept the bid. They were probably out bathing in Cristal all weekend.
