Phil Rogers puts the Cubs' bid "in the range of $25 million to $30 million."

Can't blame them for not going higher than that.

And you've got to wonder what the prospect of TribCo being sold (or raising cash by selling pieces) did to the amont of capital available for the bid.

If Boston really bid that much, why in the world did it take so long for it to be accepted? Something doesn't smell right here.

The Board of Directors had to get together and agree to it.

$42 Million should take about 10 minutes to agree to.

Just because we are in a hurry to know doesn't mean they are in a hurry to announce. A couple of days makes no difference to them. I have no idea what the media in Japan is like around this, but I am guessing it is pretty big. Might as well milk the spotlight from their perspective.

For what purpose? What will they gain by "milking" the spotlight that comes with selling their best player?

I would think it's more of a case of making sure they are going to be able to get, and keep, the promised money.

Doesn't mean it takes 6 days to get together either.

If they are trying to prove the validity of the offer, thats fine, but they are not "milking" it for media attention as someone else speculated.

They knew when the deadline was a few weeks ago, they could have picked the date for the meeting to accept a while ago.

If anyone seems to be milking it, I think it'd be MLB.

At first I thought the Red Sox were insane for spending that kind of $$ just to get the opportunity to try to negotiate with him for a contract.

After listening to TV and radio reports the last few days out here though, I can see some of reasons why they would want to outbid everyone:

1) It's a poor free agent market - especially for pitching. Boston desparately needs another starter because they have lots of other holes to fill and not much for trade bait (because they don't want to trade any of their young arms in AA or AAA).

2) They have the money

3) Boston is a different baseball town than Chicago - after failing to have a good year in 2006, they can't afford to only field a .500 team in 2007 - they don't have fans who will fill the stadium no matter what - they'll get ripped up and down in the media and from a strategic financial standpoint, they can't let that happen imho when they probably only have another year or so of Schilling and Manny left.

4) They saw what Ichiro did for Seattle (Mariners games are now broadcast in Japan as far as I know). Matsuzaka may not be as big of a name as Ichiro or Matsui, but he DEFINITELY has a young generation of followers over there and marketing WILL bring in $ to the Red Sox.

It's a gamble for sure, but if your owner is willing to put up the $$ to give it a try, I'm guessing they have done alot of calculations as to what it would take to earn that money back through marketing, and they must think it's doable. He could be another BK Kim, but from what I hear he has much more potential.

It's official as per MLB - Boston Red Sox win the rights to negotiate with Daisuke Matsuzaka, financial terms of the bid undisclosed at this time.

I've been thinking about this for awhile. Especially after Arte Moranio (the Angles owner) was willing to rid himself of big bucks for Aramis.

It seems to me that the owners in the AL are much more agressive and much more willing to spend the money to get top tier FAs then the NL clubs. I wonder if this an effect of the Yankees and the Red Sox, or of my imagination. In other words, I don't know if this is true or not but it is my perception
