The decision deadline is Tuesday, I assume Japanese time. I haven't heard whether there's a specific time.

According to Buster Olney on ESPN.com, the Seibu Lions have until Tuesday 5pm, New York time, or 96 hours after the bidding ends, to announce whether they have accepted the bid.

I can't imagine if the rumors about the Red Sox bidding between 37-45 million dollars are true, that the Lions management and ownership would have to think very long about accepting it. Perhaps, the longer they wait, the less believable that rumor becomes.

If the Cubs got word we'd won the Matsuzaka bidding today and the rumor about us offering Drew a contract that could be finished today are true...

I guess Matsuzaka, Aramis, Drew, and Wood would have to qualify as a pretty good day.

The Drew rumor looks bogus. See the Drew thread.

Kaplan was on WGN radio about half an hour ago and said that he believes the Cubs bid was $24MM. Doesn't sound like that will be enough to get it done, but we'll see.

I've read on another board that Kaplan also said that the Japanese team might think the BoSox offer is fishy (blocking another team or something), and might take the 2nd highest bid, which he said the Cubs would stand much more of a chance then. Did he mention this?

24 still wouldn't beat Texas or NY, but it gives us a little more hope.

Seibu only got the dollar value of the highest bidder, they don't know what team made that bid. They can think the bid is fishy, but they'd have to bring it up with MLB.

So far Buster Olney is the only source of the Boston rumor and I'm not buying it. If there was word like this out of Boston I still think it would have been Peter Gammons. We are also hearing that Texas might have made a huge offer, were also finding out that the Angels made an offer. I think it will either the be the Cubs or another Dark Horse team like the Angels.

its almost noon over there, i cant believe its taking so long.

i would think that the press over there may hear of the acceptance and the amount and we would all have to wait for selig to tell us the team?

The very fact that it is taking this long pretty much shreds Olney's story to pieces. Boston may very well have submitted the highest bid, but no way that team would have rejected an offer of 38-45M.

I believe the Providence Journal also reported it.

Haha, I was gone for the weekend and the first 2 things I read when I got back were that Ramirez was gone and Boston had won the bidding. I was about to jump out of a window when I decided to dig a little deeper. I still dont think we'll get Matsuzaka, but having Ramirez signed and still having a shot at Daisuke is a lot better than what I thought the situation was.

damn won't let me acess the page without signing up but that report was based on Espn.com reports that Boston was the high bidder, they didn't have any other sources in that article if I remember right.

I was under the impression it was a little more:

Numerous baseball sources told the Providence Journal that an ESPN.com report saying the Red Sox had tendered the highest offer -- between $38 million and $45 million -- for Daisuke Matsuzaka was probably accurate.

If thats the price, your looking at a 5 year deal in which you would be paying upwards of 15 mil per a year, maybe more. Wow.

I agree with the others. If Seibu is willing to let Matsuzaka go and the bid was really that high they would have said yes very quickly. That amount of money can pay a good portion if not the entire salaries of the seibu lions. So I have deducted that one of four things is probably going on.

A) Seibu's board members are, in general, internally divided about letting Matz go

B) the bid is in actuallity very low and they are unsure whether the money out weight the loss

c) mlb has stepped in and is investigating whether the bid was made in bad faith i.e to prevent the yankee from getting him.

d) they have already made their decision and are waiting until monday our time to announce it.

not that this is anything new but I'm not ready to see this thread die until we officially know.

but they don't risk losing the bid if they don't act quickly. big corporations don't do things quickly.

true. they could be trying to save face because from my understanding they are in deep debt. So they could wait unitl to tuesday to show their fans that this was a difficult decision. ANd to make sure they don't look too desperate. Edited by questionmarkgrace

I don't get it, if the stories are true, whoever leaked the report of boston's bid grossly violated the rules. They don't tell teams whose bid it was for a reason

honestly, its probably just that they can't all get together until tomorrow or some such thing. I wouldn't read much into it.

The more involved in a decision usually means the closer it will be until the final deadline before anyone says anything.

My bad, but still probably accurate doesn't inspire more faith.
