I just dont see this leading to another deal.

What insight do you have that points you to that?

While all we are doing is speculating, it is an educated speculation. We are combining Information from a very reliable posters Source, and Jim Hendry's track record. (he has traded for someone who is unwanted/meaningly/sucky and spun him in bigger deal. See: Aram & Lofton for Hill and Jose Hernandez, 2003)

This isnt that far of a streatch.

Do you think a guy like Jody is a deal breaker in a blockbuster deal? Guys like him are a dime a dozen. It's ok to speculate... heck I do it in cards trades. I'm just sayin... Jody freakin Gerut??

As Vance said, Gerut is better than Jason Lane, so in one way he's an upgrade over an offer that was on the table for Dunn. Thus, Gerut doesn't have to play the role of superstar prospect or stud OF; he just has to be better than Jason Lane.

I will say Lane was considered to have more upside I believe (no idea if he still does). I guess the Cubs needed a back up CF who is also happens to be a local guy. I can't believe the reds wouldnt do a deal for a below avg OFer... heck they have a glut of OFers as it is...

Hey Vance you going to find a Indians board, and hand off the keys to the Dubois BandWGN?? I'll miss the Creature :(

So, assuming we keep Gerut. What's his role? Does he take Hollandsworth's spot as the LHed part of the platoon. Does he take Hairston's spot in CF? Is he simply a versatile bench player and takes Grieve's spot?

He's a veratile bench player now that Greenberg's head is broke.

So is it the consensus that this will not be the last move we make?

I don't think anyone has brought up this possibility: might Burnitz be dealt?

I hope not. As much as I loathed his signing, i'd be upset if he were dealt at this point. He's been better than I expected him to be.

Why is it a bad trade? Who really cares.

It gets me frustrated that Cub fans care SO MUCH about prospects. If you want to win a World Series, you don't do it with rookies. You need proven players.

Dooby struck out a ton, and he was given a chance. He blew it. See ya later.

KRod and Miguel Cabrera say hello.

Dubois wouldn't even be able to SNIFF their jock straps. For the most part, WS teams have veterans. I can pick a few rookie studs out of my butt, but Doobie is not one of them.

So you have a quote in your signature about dusty sitting the youth, then an Eye rolling emoticon.

Yet you say here that WS winners are veteran.... Uh...How does this make sense.

I rolled my eyes at his philosophy. I'm not advocating that ALL young players play, but at some point you have to play them. If the organization feels that Dubois is not the type of player they want to build upon that's fine by me, I agree. I'd rather have higher OBP guys. Like Matt Murton.

Dubois has better OBP numbers at higher levels than Murton, in addition to better power.

And plays defense like a blind person. He's better suited in the AL as a DH. I really believe that.

Regardless:

I am not judging this deal, until I see more. It's the only mature and responsible way to judge a trade

For instance if Jody, healthy, becomes our everyday LF next year, and hits

.280/.350/.450/.800 with 25 HR and 80 RBI, plays solid defense this could be a very even trade.

He's had those numbers before, let's just see what happens before calling hendry an idiot (not saying you're doing that Cpatt20).

Like I said before, I don't understand how people can judge a deal, before either guy has even landed in the other city. It's ok to discuss it, but saying it's bad it's good, Gerut is better than/worse than Dubois, is incredibly short-sighted.

That's all I'm saying. It could turn out to be the worst deal ever. or the BEST deal ever. No one knows.

No, I don't believe that is the consensus.

Bad bad trade. Dubois > Gerut. I don't mind trading Jason, but I want something more than Gerut for him. Sheez. What does this guy bring to the table that Hollandsworth doesn't??

Hendry not off to a good July start here.

I disagree, Hendry got a pretty establish major league guy for Dubois who is still considered a prospect. The Indians don't know what they are getting (but because they have the DH Dubois will have the opportunity it hit).

Agree with you. While I love Doobie, I wouldn't say he's considered a prospect at this point...more of a AAAA guy who can't play the OF in MLB. He could prove me wrong, especially now that he can DH and maybe get a turn at 1B once in a while.

Gerut is only a year and a half older than Dubois, and Jason's value as a 1B/DH is far less than it was if he could've played LF. Seemed clear Dubois had no future with the Cubs, so getting a decent player for him is a quality move, IMO.

While he does seem very Hollandsworth-ish, Gerut is a better option than Dubois or Grieve.

It does make some sense that this move could lead to another - but I have a hunch Murton is more likely to be traded than Gerut. I think the odds are long against it leading to Dunn or even Kearns, but we can keep hoping.

BTW, reading the official Indians board, the first few posts say that Dubois can play 3B, SS, and OF, and another said that he was platooning in LF with Patterson.

I hear what you're saying but Dubois only started in 20 games this year (just heard this on the radio so I assume its correct) so if my memory is right he has about 22-25 MLB games under his belt as a starter. That sounds like a prospect to me...

I parked the BandWGN in Des Moines. They'll have to pick it up there.

What sucks is I had just gotten my picture taken with Jason in Atlanta. Oh well.

(If this move leads to Adam Dunn coming to Chicago, all will be forgiven and forgotten.)

My emotions have ran the gambit while reading the thread. I originally thought it meant Macias was on his way out assuming Dusty had some weird rule about Burnitz and Holla not being allowed to be his backup CFs, so Hendry went out and got one. But now I just think Dusty will use it as an excuse to put Jerry back in the corner for no apparent reason.

No, I doubt it. He's the only one on our roster that is a Lefty that has 15 HR's or more.

Can't see the Cubs moving him, for sure.

But strange things has happened before.

Ok, since everybody is ga-ga to get something from the reds, lets try to look at this from their point of view.

Randa is gone. It's just a question of whether they can get the pitching prospects they want at this point. But I'd put the odds of him finishing the season in Cincy at less than 5%.

Freel is a natural 3B, if I'm not mistaken.

They have Edwin Encarnacion coming up at 3rd base.

Aurilia is useless.

They still have 4 major league quality outfielders in Griffey, Dunn, Kearns, and Pena.

The way I see this, O'Brien has always enjoyed having a lot of versatility. Hence why he hasn't traded any of his outfielders.

Now lets' assume we get Dunn from them, and no other major leaguers.

Outfield is full. Casey at 1st. Aurilia at 2nd. Lopez at SS. Freel at 3B. LaRue at C.

Give them Hairston and they get an immediate upgrade at 2B, plus outfield depth in case of injury, which is likely.

Next year, Encarnacion will be at 3rd. Figure to leave Hairston at 2nd, and all of a sudden Freel is able to play each position once per week.

I'm not sure how I feel about it on a personal note, but it looks like something O'Brien would be in love with. Give them Mitre, who would be a good fit for GABP, and a high-level pitching prospect... and I think we're certainly up there with a reasonable deal.

I think this is the most important question. Why get Gerut? We needed an impact outfielder or somebody strong in the pen. Gerut does not cover either of those positions. Grieve, Murton, Hollandsworth, Hairston, Dubois, or Greenburg could have carried the outfielder role.

I still think this has to be a move to make a future trade involving many more players. Dubois for Gerut is a wash.

Which is why it also doesn't make sense to me as a precursor to another trade. Gerut isn't anything special.

If that constitutes a personal slam, then someone please kick me off the boards. I didn't attack a single poster. I merely feel it's the only mature and responsible way to judge a trade.

Plz see the Jason lane posts.

Maybe Gerut fits the bill of what Cincy wants more than doobie.

Maybe not in your eyes he's not. But for all we know, another GM could think VERY highly of him.

i hope dubois gets an extended chance in cleveland. i would liked to have seen what he could have done during the past few weeks against this run of crappy lefties the cubs have faced. i still think dubois would outproduce murton over the course of an entire season...his slugging alone makes him a better option. and murton won't keep getting bloop and infield hits all year.

not that it really matters, but, in my opinion...

dubois > murton

gerut > hollandsworth

dubois > hollandsworth

so, i think our best lf option is gone, though it's not like he's head and shoulders above everybody else. and he is far from the best option out there. i hope this means dunn, though i'd be surprised.

Grieve, Murton, Hollandsworth, Hairston, Dubois, or Greenburg could have carried the outfielder role.

How the heck do you know that? You have only seen Greenburg in one at bat...and he got hit. Dubois struggled toward quite a bit this year. Grieve...well, he's Grieve. Holla hasn't shown much this year either, save for lately.

I don't understand how you can just throw all of those names out there like that means something.
