I don't know how much trade value Dubois had in the past or heading into this season. But this deal seems to fit into the line of Cub players who's value have plummeted being dealt for much less than they once could've fetched.

It's depressing to think of what we could have had selling Cruz when his value was sky-high.... :x

And I agree with your statement.

As someone else earlier (and appropriately) pointed out...who really sells high anyway? Then he would just be open to all kind of criticism at the time the trade was made.

Again, I think this is a situation where we are valuing our own prospects too highly. Gerut is a pretty good player.

Crazy thought.

We know the Reds want to move Randa. Can probably get pitching for him.

We know Freels natural position is 3B

We know that no matter the question, Aurilia is not the answer.

Reds deal Randa, move Freel to 3B, 2B is open.

Cubs deal Hairston, Mitre, and a prospect for Dunn...

Dunn to LF, Gerut to center (until Corey earns it back)...

Just a random thought, not endorsing

So we complain incessantly about free swingers, and now we trade a million strikeout prospect for a 1:1 BB:K ratio with decent power and high OBP and it's a bad move?

I don't know if it's bad or good, I think judging this deal today, is shortsighted.

All everyone's saying is that it seems odd, given that we already have Hollandsworth and Grieve, and Gerut isn't better than either.

I strongly disagree. I don't think you know much about Gerut.

G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB CS BA OBP SLG OPS

970 3209 471 864 192 5 118 492 466 779 24 5 .269 . 368 .443 .811

304 1096 150 291 73 8 34 1 37 107 143 18 12 .266 .337 .440 .777

You're right...Grieve is a slightly better hitter than Gerut according to their career numbers. I thought they were more similar.

Doesn't Freel have a foot injury that has the word "degenerative" thrown around when describing it?

I didn't know that about Freel. That's too bad, he's a real good player.

I like the crazy thought -- I think Hairston will be dealt even though he's doing well leading off. I just don't get the sense that the Cubs really value him or like him much for that matter.

Ok...I go to the Steak and Shake and come back to see this.

A few reactions:

1. I hate to see Dubois go. Jason, we hardly knew you. Good luck in Cleveland.

2. I'm still a little puzzled by this move. Is Gerut that much better than what we have?

3. Could this be a move to acquire Dunn? Before you dismiss it...remember according to my source, Houston turned down Lane, Backe and a pitching prospect.

Now think, Gerut > Lane. Williams = Backe. Add the pitching prospect and voila...Adam Dunn.

I don't think it's fair to say that Gerut is only as good as Hollandsworth or Grieve until we see him play.

I remember the "He had one great year a few years ago and has sucked since" argument when Hendry acquired Aramis Ramirez. How has that turned out?

Ramirez was 3 years younger than Gerut when we got him, and his bad year had more to do with a badly sprained ankle that messed his swing up than a 3 year decline in power.

Well I'm reserving judgment until he comes and starts hitting. I think it's not likely that they spin Gerut off in another trade. More likley to send one of the current guys (Grieve/Holla) away.

Vance, Roast hit on this earleir in the thread, but until you put it that way I didn't really think too hard about it....

Actually, Freel called it his "degenerate toe"

Maybe it was picking on handicapped kids or something.

There's got to be something else going on. Why would the Cubs need two left handed left fielders? Seems like something else is going to happen.

I gotta agree. Rotoworld said Gerut would likely take Grieve's job...first of all, Grieve is doing fine and has a great OBP...secondly, that would still give us 2 LH LF'ers which wouldn't make sense, and Murton is doing fine so there's no point in sending him back down.

And third and most importantly if Rotoworld is right, Grieve doesn't really do anything with the big league team.

YES!

Haha, I said this a few pages back. GO me. I said he may be the "established position player" they want.

I will never understand the obsession/infatuation with Jason Dubois.

It's the same infatuation people had with Choi, Hill, Harris, etc. In some people's eyes, youth > proven veteran in every case. In the above mentioned players, i don't regret trading one of them.

His production at every level of the minor leagues, including a 1000+ OPS at AAA?

His inability to Run, Field, Throw, Hit for Average, Take a BB, Not Strikeout.......

It's like he's the second coming of Hank Aaron or something if you read these boards.

Or Ben Grieve.

It's not an obcession with Grieve, it's using their career numbers to point out there's little difference between Gerut and Grieve other than age, and 27 to 29 isn't a giant gap.

It's just another aspect of this deal that makes little sense. It's a razor thin upgrade at best, so why spend the prospect?

AAA in '04:

.316/.389/.630/1.019 31HR in 386AB

He's shown the ability to hit for a decent average, walk at decent rate, and crush the ball.

I just wish he would have gotten hot in the one shot he got, oh well.

I'm beginning to seriously think we're gertting Dunn - its starting to honestly make sense, or am I just overrationalizing things? Especially given how good we've been playing lately, those are usually the moments when Hendry makes a big move.

Agreed, especially considering Hendry's comments. Sounds like Jody will be a Cubs outfielder and not traded which means somebody is most likely going:

"We like the fact that he's a left-handed hitter," Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said in Cincinnati, following Chicago's 9-4 victory over the Reds. "He's an above-average defensive player. He's more suited to play either corner, but he can play center. He's a guy who could help this club down the stretch."
