Wait a second, Jody Gerut's a lefty. How exactly is a guy who posts a .208/.302/.311/.613 line against lefties and a .289/.349/.507/.856 against righties supposed to platoon with Hollandsworth, who plays primarily against righties?

FYI, those numbers are three year splits.

I'm confused. Are we trading for a right handed LF next or something?

Byrnes? A Gerut/Byrnes platoon would be good, yet we would probably overpay for what it would provide.

Who would we send Colorado? It would have made more sense to just send Colorado Dubois for Byrnes.

Exactly. You'd think they'd want dubois more than Gerut.

Gah. This is really confusing me.

I dont know if hendry is just making some unneccesary move, or if its part of something bigger.

I CERTAINLY hope he doesnt think this guy is the answer.

I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop. Gerut is not completely healed. Dubois is going to play on the big league roster. Tom Hamilton/Indians play by play guy was just on the radio...

I'm in agreement with everyone on this deal. We already have two left handed LFs on this team in Grieve and Hollandsworth. Gerut can't hit lefties worth a lick, so it's not like he can platoon with Hollandsworth or Grieve. He's not much of an upgrade over either, so platooning him with Murton makes no sense. Toss Adam Greenberg into the equation and you got a head-scratcher.

If we're releasing Grieve and using Gerut as a 5th OF, I could kinda see the point of this deal, but giving up Dubois does not make it a worthwhile deal.

All right, this only makes sense with a trade. What team would want Ben Grieve, Todd Hollandsworth, or Jody Gerut as a left handed LF?

I joked earlier that the White Sox might want Hollandsworth for Shingo.

Maybe it's Grieve for Shingo.

Boston doesn't need another OF, right? What about the Angels? Certainly we wouldn't deal with the Cardinals, who just lost Sanders, right?

So we complain incessantly about free swingers, and now we trade a million strikeout prospect for a 1:1 BB:K ratio with decent power and high OBP and it's a bad move?

I don't know if it's bad or good, I think judging this deal today, is shortsighted.

All everyone's saying is that it seems odd, given that we already have Hollandsworth and Grieve, and Gerut isn't better than either.

Maybe we're all freaking out for nothing. These guys on the Score seem to think this trade is a steal by the Cubs. We'll see...

The guys on the Score have the baseball knowledge of your average Cubs.com poster. As a group, they aren't very insightful. They are very impressed by "name" players, as evidenced by the pining for Jason Schmidt a few weeks ago.

Posted a poll asking who you'd rather have. I'm interested to see the results. New to the board, I hope I'm not coming off as a cards fan troll.

Dubois given our current roster. However, if Gerut manages to be spun into some big deal for an OF bat, I like it.

Right now, I dislike it.

True, right now. He has way more upside than either in the long run.

Also, He looked like a really solid player before his injury. Hendry said he wouldn't be getting a rental. This could be a great piece to the puzzle a young LF with power and high OBP

He's not that young; he's only 27, and he doesn't have great power for a corner OF. He's basically Ben Grieve with slightly more power.

No, you are right on par with our thoughts.

What the hell is the point of this deal??

I have a strong inclination that its part of something larger.

Tell me if this makes sense

For some reason, the reds want Gerut. But, for whatever reason (probably a territorial thing) the Indians GM does not want to trade with him. So, Hendry trades for Gerut. THen spins him to CIncy in a package for dunn. He could be the "Established major league position player" that we have talked about in the dunn threads.

THoughts?

His OBP is pretty good, but his power has been going away since his good 2003.

2003: .494 SLG, .215 IsoP

2004: .405 SLG, .153 IsoP

2005: .377 SLG, .102 IsoP

Well, I mean, talent wise, it's a good deal. Doobie wasn't going to get his shot here, and if Gerut can channel his '02 AAA line of .322/.401/.399/.800 (yes, only 183 AB, his AA line of the same year in 256 wasn't too shabby either, .281/.368/.461/.829) in the big leagues, I'd be estatic.

An upgrade to Grieve on the bench, and would probably outperform Hollandsworth. Hmm....

Only in 2003 did he post good power numbers, around a .500 SLG between AAA and MLB. It looks like that year could easily be an abberation. He's never done much better than .460 in any other year.

Roast-

I wish that were true, but somehow I doubt that Dan O'Brien would be pining for Jody Gerut. I think that the hangup with any Dunn deal would be the pitching prospects we could give them.

If Cincy desired Gerut in a trade, Cleveland likely would have shipped him off to Cincy by now for Joe Randa, who they are rumored to be ga-ga for.

I'm mixed personally, unless it's part of something bigger. I agree with you guys that it's not necessarily a bad trade, just an unnecessary one. We'll see what unfolds...
