It doesn't seem like that bad a deal. He's left handed, knows how to take a walk. Not much power for an outfielder, but he seems like a solid pickup for the bench. Given how Dubois was struggling at the major league level, this seems like a decent addition when it comes to depth.

Why not keep Grieve? It's almost the same player.

He is two years younger, way more athletic and a much better defender.

It's really hard for me to see how Gerut isn't just another incarnation of Hollandsworth.

Or Grieve. I don't get this move unless we're moving someone else. Why give up Dubois and send Grieve down to make room for Gerut when you could just keep Dubois in AAA, maybe use him in a bigger deal, and leave Grieve on the 25 man as the 5th OF?

Dubois wasn't going to get any PT with Dusty at the helm, unfortunately. Gerut has experience in the majors and should at least see regular time on this team.

I'm guessing Murton gets shipped to AAA after this?

I agree, but that still doesn't explain "why."

Well, hopefully Jason can finally get some playing time...

Gerut bats lefty. How about a Gerut/Murton platoon?

But it's not like it's a major upgrade between the two. In my opinion, it's not worth giving up a player who's 2 years younger, has ML power, and could be used as part of a larger deal.

It seems to me to be a very lateral, unecessary move.

Wait a second, Jody Gerut's a lefty. How exactly is a guy who posts a .208/.302/.311/.613 line against lefties and a .289/.349/.507/.856 against righties supposed to platoon with Hollandsworth, who plays primarily against righties?

I'm confused. Are we trading for a right handed LF next or something?

Why wouldn't they just stick with Hollandsworth in that case though? Is Gerut that much better?

Is something bigger in place?

Beat ya too it.

I would really hope it is.

If not, this isnt that great of a deal, imo.

Is something bigger in place? Why would they send down Murton after a 4 hit performance? Could Holly be gone?

Who would want him, and for what? Holla would only be attractive to teams looking for an extra bat off the bench.

FWIW, I really doubt we send Murton down because of this. Grieve most likely goes down. Why would one platoon Gerut and Hollandsworth?

I don't like this move at all. Jody has shown no power this year (a .370 SLG), he's been getting on base at an ok clip (.351), infact his number look a heack of a lot like Hairston's. Except that Hairston as shown more pop this year.

Also, If you judge based soley on OPS, Dubois has had the better year thus fa,r due to his massive SLG edge.

Well, all in all, it was clear Doobie was never going to get a shot with the team this year, and next year, he either stuck in the bigs or someone was going to claim him when we sent him down. So it's good to get something for him.

Gerut is interesting. Here's his minor league stats

this really doesn't make sense

Maybe we're trading Hollandsworth for Shingo...

just kidding. I agree that it doesn't make sense.

Someone page Bruce Miles or Hoops!

Byrnes? A Gerut/Byrnes platoon would be good, yet we would probably overpay for what it would provide.

Who would we send Colorado? It would have made more sense to just send Colorado Dubois for Byrnes.

I'm in agreement with everyone on this deal. We already have two left handed LFs on this team in Grieve and Hollandsworth. Gerut can't hit lefties worth a lick, so it's not like he can platoon with Hollandsworth or Grieve. He's not much of an upgrade over either, so platooning him with Murton makes no sense. Toss Adam Greenberg into the equation and you got a head-scratcher.

If we're releasing Grieve and using Gerut as a 5th OF, I could kinda see the point of this deal, but giving up Dubois does not make it a worthwhile deal.

All right, this only makes sense with a trade. What team would want Ben Grieve, Todd Hollandsworth, or Jody Gerut as a left handed LF?
