For some reason, the reds want Gerut. But, for whatever reason (probably a territorial thing) the Indians GM does not want to trade with him. So, Hendry trades for Gerut. THen spins him to CIncy in a package for dunn. He could be the "Established major league position player" that we have talked about in the dunn threads.

THoughts?

If Cincy desired Gerut in a trade, Cleveland likely would have shipped him off to Cincy by now for Joe Randa, who they are rumored to be ga-ga for.

Shapiro's no dummy though. He knows that Dubois is better for his team in the long run, and maybe short term too.

*sigh*

It was a thought..

But, I really dont get this move...It just has to be part of SOMETHING bigger.

I hope.

Posted a poll asking who you'd rather have. I'm interested to see the results. New to the board, I hope I'm not coming off as a cards fan troll.

No, you are right on par with our thoughts.

What the hell is the point of this deal??

I have a strong inclination that its part of something larger.

Tell me if this makes sense

I really doubt it, I mean is any GM really lusting for jody? How do you know about the Red want him? That said the Cubs need OBP REALLY bad. This does the trick a little... too bad he plays LF. The are playing well, maybe henry is going for it and getting Dunn...

I don't know how much trade value Dubois had in the past or heading into this season. But this deal seems to fit into the line of Cub players who's value have plummeted being dealt for much less than they once could've fetched.

It's depressing to think of what we could have had selling Cruz when his value was sky-high.... :x

And I agree with your statement.

From Rotoworld:

Cubs acquired outfielder Jody Gerut from the Indians for outfielder Jason Dubois.

It'd almost make more sense the other way, as Gerut is the same type of player as Todd Hollandsworth and Dubois is rather similar to Casey Blake. Gerut figures to take Ben Grieve's job. We doubt he'll be handed Hollandsworth's job against right-handers, but he might take some of his playing time. NL-only leaguers should wait and see.

Interesting. We don't mind the trade for the Indians, but we're surprised they couldn't get a prospect thrown in with Dubois, given how down the Cubs were on him. Whether Dubois will have any more of a role than Gerut did is a mystery. That he's a right-handed hitter, like Casey Blake, doesn't really help his case. Still, we like his chances of outhitting Blake if given a chance. AL-only leaguers may want to wait to see what his role will be before picking him up. Jul. 18 - 11:21 pm et

Eh, i'm not sure there was any point you would have gotten more than this for Doobie. Maybe when he had that bloated line earlier in the year from feasting on lefties.

Well, let's see how this one pans out.

I'm not a fan at this point...I'll reserve judgment for now, but the numbers don't look good...

Have you seen Dubois's major league numbers? Not good. I dont think its just Dusty mis-handeling him. Its also that his swing has serious holes.

I don't think it's fair to say that Gerut is only as good as Hollandsworth or Grieve until we see him play.

I remember the "He had one great year a few years ago and has sucked since" argument when Hendry acquired Aramis Ramirez. How has that turned out?

career Minor league number:

Dubois:

.299/.379/.550/.929 in 1633AB .5 BB/K

Gerut:

.290/.386/.448/.884 in 1365AB 1.1 BB/K

Gerut walks a little more, strike out a lot less, and hits for a good deal less power. Bleh.

Ramirez was 3 years younger than Gerut when we got him, and his bad year had more to do with a badly sprained ankle that messed his swing up than a 3 year decline in power.

So we complain incessantly about free swingers, and now we trade a million strikeout prospect for a 1:1 BB:K ratio with decent power and high OBP and it's a bad move?

I don't know if it's bad or good, I think judging this deal today, is shortsighted.

All everyone's saying is that it seems odd, given that we already have Hollandsworth and Grieve, and Gerut isn't better than either.

I strongly disagree. I don't think you know much about Gerut.

Here's a thought:

What if the Cubs did this because they're going to trade Hollandsworth?

Okay, back to my theory i brought up a couple minutes ago, only revise it.

Maybe cincy wants Hollandsworth, but first, Hendry wanted to get someone to replace him.....still. Couldnt dubois have done that.

<--------- wants dunn.

Seriously, I know you guys all love Dubois but get over him. He was absolutely nothing special. He is a AAAA player if I ever saw one.

There's got to be something else going on. Why would the Cubs need two left handed left fielders? Seems like something else is going to happen.

I gotta agree. Rotoworld said Gerut would likely take Grieve's job...first of all, Grieve is doing fine and has a great OBP...secondly, that would still give us 2 LH LF'ers which wouldn't make sense, and Murton is doing fine so there's no point in sending him back down.

I've seen him play some in Cleveland when I lived in the area, and I've been looking hard at his numbers since the deal was announced. How is he better than those two. Both Holla and Gerut are decent OBP, mid to upper 700 OPS outfielders that are decent defenders. How is he better than Hollandsworth.

Apparently not. Hendry feels Dubois' future is as a DH--he's probably right:

"Jason's a guy who has power potential," Hendry said. "All of us felt he might be better suited to the other league."
