This move makes a little more sense if you assume that: 1) Greenberg's injury is worse than we know and 2) The Cubs don't view Grieve as a viable reserve outfielder. In that case, Gerut becomes the backup OF and a left-handed bat off the bench.

Good luck Doobs!

Followed him for several years, like many posters on this board, but his astronomically high K rate really makes him the kind of hitter we don't want anymore.

I was listening to the Reds broadcast tonight and their announcer said something interesting: to paraphrase, "These Cubs make a lot of contact. They get a lot of hits and they don't strike out much. If a runner needs to be moved over, they get a fly ball or a grounder in the right spot to do it."

I liked that. In that same vein, I like this trade - not ecstatic, but it's a good move. Doobs is the wrong fit for our club as it's currently constructed. Besides the K rate, his defense was atrocious and good D saves a lot of runs. How many times have I seen Burnitz cut off a ball well and prevent a runner from getting into second base, i.e. scoring position?

But how can he platoon with Holla when he gets so dominated by lefties? Seems another move is forthcoming.

Goodbye, Jason. We hardly knew ye.

And I know next to nothing about Gerut. My gut says "what was the point?", though.

Don't get too excited about a "follow-up" deal. This is the Cubs, after all.

How do you guys know the reds want jody? I've never heard that until this thread...

We never said they did.

The reds want a "established position player"

The cubs really couldnt provide that, well, They could, but I dont think hendry really wants to give up any of our established position players. It makes sense then, that we get a guy like gerut, by giving up a prospect, to then spin to Cincy.

it's just speculation...

I thought the Reds problem was a glut of OF's (Kearns, Pena, Dunn, Griffey). Why would they want another one who, if you believe posters here tonight, is inferior to all those guys?

I will never understand the obsession/infatuation with Jason Dubois.

His production at every level of the minor leagues, including a 1000+ OPS at AAA?

His inability to Run, Field, Throw, Hit for Average, Take a BB, Not Strikeout.......

It's like he's the second coming of Hank Aaron or something if you read these boards.

Okay, his less than 150 AB's in sporadic PT at the Major League level were enough for you. Fair enough. I'll try and stay with Gerut in this thread.

Exactly, it is the cubs. we've done it before (remembe jose hernandez?)

Excellent point, although in any trade scenario the pitching prospects and not the ML ready position player are the keys to the deal from Cinci's point of view. They'd just need Gerut to take Dunn's place assuming they also want to deal Kearns for pitching.

It's not necessarily that the Reds want Jody, but Jody could be replacing whomever they do want. If Corey fits the bill, Jody could conceivably fill in at center for the rest of the season. And if Hairston is the "established major leaguer"... well, again, Jody in center.

Why is it a bad trade? Who really cares.

It gets me frustrated that Cub fans care SO MUCH about prospects. If you want to win a World Series, you don't do it with rookies. You need proven players.

Dooby struck out a ton, and he was given a chance. He blew it. See ya later.

It's based on the information that the Reds wanted Jason Lane in a deal with the Astros.

Lane's career numbers: 254/313/491 29 yrs old

Gerut's career numbers: 266/337/440 27 yrs old

It's not a stretch to see the similarities. Maybe the Reds had no interest in Dubois, but they like Gerut.

That sounds more like the scenario. I would sure hope that Dunn would raise his .245 average if he did come to Chicago. Not exactly his best season this year outside of the power.

Bad bad trade. Dubois > Gerut. I don't mind trading Jason, but I want something more than Gerut for him. Sheez. What does this guy bring to the table that Hollandsworth doesn't??

Hendry not off to a good July start here.

All I have to say, before I head to bed, is that I find it FASCINATING, that people can judge a trade, in black and white, before the guys traded have even reached their new homes.

Clairvoyancy is a skill I need to develop.

Vance, you rock.

YOu are making my hair brained idea earlier sound good.

I disagree, Hendry got a pretty establish major league guy for Dubois who is still considered a prospect. The Indians don't know what they are getting (but because they have the DH Dubois will have the opportunity it hit).

I've heard some talk lately about a Randa > Sabbathia trade....does this add any light to the subject?

Wow. That would sink the Indians ship for sure. Why they would do that when they are within 4 or 5 of the wilcard is beyond me. Why their fascination with Randa? Geezus.

KRod and Miguel Cabrera say hello.

No offense but i really think this is wishful think by you cub fans. Here's not going anywhere because he has little trade value. I think Jody is a good utility OFer whos from the chicagoland area. Thats not such a bad thing... I just dont see this leading to another deal.
