Without knowing the cost yet - in a vacuum - this pleases me.

So if this goes through will the Cubs do a six man rotation when Steele comes back?

I think it would be a pretty good idea, considering you can give Cabrera and Steele extra rest between starts.

Steele/Boyd/Horton/Cabrera/Taillon/Shota/Rea/Assad/Wicks is kind of crazy rotation depth

On the one hand, yes.

On the other hand, per Steamer while we wait for the rest of Zips to come out, there's not a top 50 pitcher in this group for 2026. Boyd is 51, Shota 66, Cabrera 74, Taillon 100, Horton 132, Steele 134 (in 83 innings), Rea 192

Back on the first hand, maintaining the elite defense that we have, whether with Shaw or with Bregman, will help all those guys play up.

On the second hand, it would be fun to see what a truly elite pitcher could do behind that defense.

On the first hand, finally, there really wasn't much of an option to get one of those, so the largely cost controlled depth paired with Zombro and Hottovy and gold gloves is fine, especially if (HUGE IF) we drop a big check on a bat here shortly.

This could open up a good bit more ABs for Alcantara who would likely be your back up CFer and RFer now.

I don't think you can go into the season with that being the case.  Even if it isn't a starter, there has to be another corner OF bat in the mix.

You'd have to start Alcantara in RF, Seiya at DH, and MB catching in AAA, right?

Nah, I think, as of now, Seiya is your RF and Mo is your DH.

Since I've gotten really into posting pros/cons lists of late to organize my thoughts let's do one here.  Spoiler alert, it's mostly pros

Pros

- Cabrera had a good year last year and got better as the year went on.  He had a 3.42 ERA in the second half and his peripherals backed that up.  He seems to be a legitimate #2 starter now

- 127 pitchers threw at least 100 innings last season, Cabrera was 10th in average fastball velocity.  Even beyond the results we've wanted a guy who looks like this for ages

- Cabrera comes with three years of cost control, including a ~$5M salary this year

- That low salary this year plus the timing of the deal *heavily* implies that the team is feeling good about reeling in a Bregman or a Bicbette

- There is/was a lot of redundancy between Mo, Caissie, and Alcantara.  Particularly those first two.  So using Caissie here to pay the heavy freight means this tradd doesn't hurt the farm/organizational health as much as it would seem at first glance

Cons

- Cabrera kinda sucked before last year.  So similar to Imai his projections are exceedingly mediocre.  ZiPS says a 4.01 ERA and 1.9 WAR

- The medical history is long.  Most concerning is that he had two separate elbow injuries in the second half last year.  So while any pitcher can blow up on you at any time there's an elevated chance with Cabrera

Love this.  Love love love it.

Given his medicals I won't be jumping for joy until it's official. They also had a deal agreed to last year for Luzardo.
