I realize this is slightly off-topic, because it doesn't make sense in a Garza trade scenario (not that the Yankees would trade him anyway), but should the Cubs pursue Robinson Cano after next year? 2B is a big hole for the future, but Cano will be 31 in his next FA year and probably command 7+ years. I'm assuming the Yankees pickup the 2013 option.

Forgive me if this was already discussed somewhere in the 80 previous pages.

Mike Minor sucks.

Mike Minor isn't anywhere close to reaching his potential. He'd be a good buy low candidate, IMO. I like Minor, despite his struggles, if he puts it together he could be a very good pitcher. And really, what are you expecting in terms of MLB talent for a half year rental of a 35 year old pitcher?

A guy that hasn't been horrific in a full season's worth of ML starts.

Yeah and at the ages of 23 and 24 180 innings is a good indicator to pass on a guy who, just last year, was a top MLB pitching prospect. Good logic there. Let's pass on the big potential of a young, under-control-for-several-more-years pitcher with a good pedigree because he hasn't cut the mustard in parts of two seasons.

This player, over the course of two partial seasons totaling a full seasons worth of starts (more or less), at the age of 23 and 24, put up this line...

6.09ERA 29GS 9W-10L 173IP 140K 79ERA+ 10.6H/9 3.5BB/9 7.3K/9

He was a top prospect in baseball before his age 23 season.

Would you trade Dempster for that if you knew it was Roy Halladay?

ha ha dummy, you wouldn't trade dempster for a 23 year old roy halladay??? what are you stupid or something???

According to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, the Blue Jays have expressed interest in acquiring Matt Garza.

The Cubs are reportedly willing to listen to offers on Garza, and it’s been speculated the Blue Jays could be in the market for another starter. Garza has proven success in the AL East and is under club control through 2013. The Yankees also are believed to have speculative interest. The Cubs haven't ruled out an extension, either.

Rather them than the Yankees. They're stacked with pitching prospects. Arencibia and two of Snydersgaard/McGuire/Nicolino/Hutchinson? Maybe Gose?

Why do you want him?

Good fielding catcher with a power stroke. Jays have reason to move him with D'Arnaud knocking at the door. Didn't realize he's older than Castillo, though. Obviously he wouldn't be the centerpiece of a deal.

Love their system, but I'd want more than that. Give me Hutchison, Gose, and one of Syndergaard/Sanchez/Nicolino/Norris. Plus, a guy like Carlos perez or Moises Sierra. The more I think about trading Garza, the more we better get for him, because it pushes us further away from competing.

no, you're right...every pitcher that sucks at age 23 turns into roy halladay.

or he's just trying to illustrate that it's stupid to give up on a pitching prospect after one year of crappy major league numbers

granted, an extremely rare case like halladay isn't the best way of doing that, but why are you intentionally being obtuse?

it's just a dumb example if you're trying to prove a point.

"13th round draft pick, who cares?"

"OH, YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT ALBERT PUJOLS??????!!!!!"

I ran a BR Play Index for players who started at least 25 games in their age 23-24 seasons and had an ERA over 6. There are 13 in major league history. The 12 other than Halladay:

Todd Van Poppel

Arthur Rhodes

Jo Jo Reyes

Bryan Rekar

Oliver Perez

Garrett Olson

Aaron Myette

Colby Lewis

LaTroy Hawkins

Chris George

John D'Acquisto

Ken Cloude

Aside from TVP, were any of those guys highly regarded at all as prospects?

Hahahahahahahah! Well done.

Hey...Oliver Perez was sort of not terrible once or twice. Sort of.

Rhodes was the #5 prospect in baseball in 1992. Colby Lewis was #32 in 2003.

I'm under the assumption that by the sheer definition of the scope (23 yos who start 20 games in the majors are by definition highly regarded prospects coming into the season), they were all well regarded (BA only has prospect lists going back to 1990).
