Hoyer said they'll look into extending Garza, as expected. I guess 5/65 is pretty fair, including this season?

Fair? Yes. But that's barely more AAV than Garza was asking for just for this season, so my guess is he'll want more.

Agreed, if we sign him long term I am guessing it's closer to 5/75-80 or 6/90

But, he settled for far less than that. I think 5/70, which is basically 4/60.5 would get it done.

I really hope the Cubs trade him. I don't think his value will ever be higher and I think he's going to significant have arm problems if he keeps throwing breaking ball as often as last year.

I think that's the best argument for trading him. He was really a different type of pitcher this season, in terms of repertoire, so I think the productivity has a real chance to be sustainable. However, it also comes with a higher chance of arm injury.

That said, I'd still hold out for at least a king's ransom and if nobody offered that, then I'd hold onto him.

Four years is reasonable. Wouldn't go more than five. I was happy with keeping him if we couldn't get a good haul.

i love how they handled this. they dangled him in the offseason to see if someone give up too much for him, and when they didn't get it they started thinking extension.

Even signing him to an extension doesn't stop the Cubs from trading him later. Whoever trades for him most likely would have wanted to sign that same extension anyway.

But from what I've heard people say, Jed and Theo don't have a history of handing out NTC's, and Garza wants one. This will deffinately be interesting. I for one would love to have Garza around the next 4, maybe 5 years.

The more they rep the contract extension, the more I'm convinced he's going to be traded by the deadline.

Personally, I like my pitchers to have more than one good season before I drop a long-term deal on them.

Unfortunately, trade partners feel the same way about dropping top prospects on them.

Yeah, as much as I was sucked into the vacuum of teams emptying out their farms for him, I'd have expected something more along the lines of Smyly or Crosby+Castalannos or Gose (or even Snider)+Drabek+1 more high ceiling prospect at best.

Came across this little tidbit on Twitter today and thought it might be of some interest to those who followed this drama closely during the offseason:

Buster Olney ‏ @Buster_ESPN

About Jacob Turner's drop in velocity this spring: Talked with executives w/other teams who say their scouts reported this late in '11, too.

Well, that was a bullet dodged... I'm guessing he'll have to go under the knife by the end of the year (they will "rehab him", then he will "man up" and pitch a few starts, then they will do a MRI and discover tendon/ligament damage in the arm/shoulder).

Obviously anything can still happen - and we'll never know what would have happened if he'd come to the Cubs (at least not precisely) - but it's a reminder of just how fragile prospects' futures are.

Looks like everyone's favorite complimentary trade target made the Tigers rotation

http://espn.go.com/mlb/spring2012/story/_/id/7762166/2012-spring-training-lefty-drew-smyly-22-earns-spot-tigers-rotation

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Called into manager Jim Leyland's office on Sunday morning, Drew Smyly heard the news he'd hoped for all spring.

Smyly, a 22-year-old lefty who has never pitched above Double-A, had earned a spot in the Detroit Tigers' rotation.

With Cain getting locked down and Hamels possibly following suit at some point, we're going to receive an absolute HAUL, if we decide to trade Garza.

I actually don't see Hamels resigning with Philly, but that would be very frustrating.

He should go off and lead a staff himself. They have two guys who make him 3rd fiddle over here and Cole Hamels is not even close to a third fiddle type of talent. Guys the best FA pitcher available next year and I don't think it's so close even with Greinke out there.
