Jim Hendry would never fire a veteran manager.

The question is, will Ricketts fire a veteran GM and manager.

I think he might. Ricketts and his family did not put so much money into buying a team that is underachieving. If this team isn't playing better by the end of May, I thnk Lou and Hendry will be gone, and Trammell and ??? will take over as Manager and GM. But alas if you fire Piniella, you open the door for the Cubs to promote Ryne Sandberg to at least interim manager, and that is a propostion I'm not particularly interested in.

Ricketts has been very complimentary toward Lou in the press ever since he started talking about the deal. If I had to guess, I would bet he is much more likely to let this season play out and then making wholesale changes in the offseason, including hiring a "baseball guy" who will determine who the next GM will be and let that guy select his manager.

That sounds about right. Plus, frankly, I'd rather not have a front office shakeup prior to the draft and trade deadline.

You seem to be contradicting yourself. You say that Trammell will take over as manager (good), but in the next sentence you say it will be Sandberg (bad).

A front office shakeup may not have any impact whatsoever on the draft. And frankly I'd rather have people in here who care about the future instead of desperate execs looking to save their job with an 85 win season.

pinch hitting options in the 8th inning, with stats this season:

chad tracy: .154/.214/.231/.445

xavier nady: .200/.314/.300/.614

alfonso soriano: .292/.356/.508/.864

geovany soto: .362/.516/.511/1.027

you're using two pinch hitters back to back. pick two.

Let Chad Tracy bat and then after he makes an out, let him take the next at-bat also. I'm sure we'd get no argument from the opposing team.

I want Trammel, but I think I read somewhere that Tom Ricketts wanted Sandberg as the next manager.

Your wording indicated that you THOUGHT Trammel would take over, which your next sentence contradicts. If what you meant was that you WANT Trammel but THOUGHT it would more likely be Sandberg (which is what your reply seems to suggest), that makes more sense.

leadoff double by byrd today; lou declines to bunt for fontenot (who pops out) and then pinch hits the awful chad tracy against clippard, resulting in (believe it or not) a strikeout.

lou is severely hampering this team's ability to win baseball games and needs to be fired.

Lou allegedly unloaded on some reporter in the post-game for suggesting he have Fontenot bunt.

that wasn't even the most egregious problem. he used two guys who haven't been hitting instead of two guys who have been hitting really well when it's very likely that he won't have another good chance to use pinch hitters. what a friggin dolt he is. can't believe he's making $4m this year when several NSBB members could do a better job.

If both Hendry and Lou were fired (or either, really), the likelihood would be that interim people would be put in their places. Those interim people would also be making moves with their jobs in mind, assuming they were auditioning for a job.

He fired Don Baylor, I believe.

Hendry was promoted the day after Baylor was fired.

Ah, ok. I knew he was promoted the same year that Baylor was fired, but couldn't remember the exact timetable. I thought Hendry was promoted earlier in the year and Baylor fired later in the year.

i'm having trouble thinking of many people i would like to see in the dugout LESS than lou. dusty baker is definitely one.

I'd actually take Lou in the dugout before any of the 3 prior managers the Cubs had.

Riggleman, though, I'd rather see in the dugout than Lou.

Bob Brenly is terrible at managing a baseball team. It's a little terrifying how many Cubs fans would love to have him manage their team despite listening to his ideas in the booth.

yeah i think i'd have to take lou over dusty, baylor and brenly. not sure about kimm - not a lot of data there. my sense was that he was lousy but harmless. lou is fairly harmless too, though his lack of patience with young players who don't produce right away can be damaging.

That's what I meant.

With the way the Sandberg has been moving up the minors the past couple years, its pretty clear he's in line to manage the Cubs once Lou leaves.

Sandberg could be in line for the job at some point, but I wouldn't be surprised if Trammel is also strongly considered for the position. Especially if there's a change at GM, I could see Trammel possibly being promoted to manager and Sandberg joining the staff either as a bench coach or as a hitting coach.

MacPhail fired Baylor, then stepped down as GM and promoted Hendry from Assistant GM. I think that sequence of events was largely so that Hendry wouldn't have to fire Baylor as his first move.
