I hope someone asks him about it in the post-game. I'd love to hear how he defends it.

Nobody dares question the crazy old man.

Or they, too, are incompetent and don't even realize it was a dumb move.

yeah i think a lot of the newspaper people are old guys who eat up the small-ball crap.

2 more things to consider (in addition to soto's .500+ obp) when trying to fully grasp the stupidity of that move:

a) the pitcher had just walked the previous batter on 4 straight pitches

b) before tonight, bruney had walked NINE batters in 8.1 IP so far this season (and walked 3 more tonight)

hahaha...WTF? I had some bedtime issues with my 3 year old during the bot of the 9th and missed this. Hill actually pinch-hit for Soto? Wow, I'm glad I didn't see that. Guess I didn't notice Hill catching for Marmol in the 10th either (though I was still distracted by my little girl). Didn't read a thing about it doing my usual paper-surfing for recaps this morning.

Amazing, Lou.

Amazing, Lou.

It's not only that he had Hill ph for Soto. It's that he had Hill ph for Soto with the express purpose of bunting the runner over.

that he bunted into a force is just poetic.

I seem to recall Lou having done this previously. If the hitter isn't a good bunter, Lou will PH with him and have the PH bunt, which is maybe the dumbest thing ever.

Pinch bunting was bad enough. But if you're going to use a pinch hitter solely to bunt, why not use Dempster?

I guess with Hill at the plate there's still a chance he could swing away.

There will never be a manager that NSBB will agree with... But Piniella comes pretty damn close. I think back to the Dusty Baker days, with 2 straight years of below .500, and appreciate Piniella.

And you can't just look at records and say this manager good, this manager bad.

It's doing that stuff that leaves you thinking Dusty Baker is a good hire in the winter of 2002.

NSBB is not some kind of single minded hive entity.

Message board grinder rule #1: When 90% of a message board population disagrees with you, you aren't wrong, it's just groupthink.

This is a load of BS. Piniella has gotten worse every year hes been here plain and simple. His use of the bullpen, and his doghouse for bullpen members are 2 of his biggest faults. However this year its evolved into more than just that like his defensive replacements for Soto who is head and shoulders better than Hill with the bat, and not that far behind him defensively if any, that its asinine to remove him from close games. Pinch hitting for Soto last night was 1 of the most ignorant things Ive seen him do. Its completely mind baffling that anybody in their right mind would think to pinch hit for Soto there last night.

Agreed, otherwise it's a huge waste of a bench spot.

On rare occasion, I don't have an issue with a pitcher pinch-running, either.

Well, Hill was coming in regardless because Lou was pulling out starting catcher with an OBP over 500 to [expletive] bunt.

Yeah, that was dumb. Had we scored the go-ahead run that inning and Hill was put in as a defensive replacement, I wouldn't have cared too much. But taking out your hottest hitter just to pinch bunt was completely asinine.

Guys can get into Lou's doghouse for making 3 consecutive outs, yet he continues to pitch Grabow in close games as he fails every time.

Eh, I mean, he hasn't really been pitching him all that much has he? I despise Grabow, but this certainly isn't a repeat of 08 Howry.

He's pitched on two days rest twice, one days rest twice, three days rest twice and no rest four times.

leadoff double by byrd today; lou declines to bunt for fontenot (who pops out) and then pinch hits the awful chad tracy against clippard, resulting in (believe it or not) a strikeout.

lou is severely hampering this team's ability to win baseball games and needs to be fired.

pinch hitting options in the 8th inning, with stats this season:

chad tracy: .154/.214/.231/.445

xavier nady: .200/.314/.300/.614

alfonso soriano: .292/.356/.508/.864

geovany soto: .362/.516/.511/1.027

you're using two pinch hitters back to back. pick two.
