Fire Lou Piniella

CINCINNATI -- Geovany Soto has to hit. It's that simple.

Cubs catcher Koyie Hill made his second start on Friday night, but the reasoning behind that is Lou Piniella wants Soto matched up with Carlos Zambrano on Saturday. With the short turnaround, the Cubs wanted Soto to get enough rest.

Still, Soto is 1-for-6 in the two games he has played in, and the Cubs have scored nine runs in three games so far.

"I like the way [Hill] calls a ballgame," Piniella said Friday. "He's a really good defensive catcher. When a team isn't scoring many runs, the more defense you have on the field, the better.

"Is [Hill] going to catch more? We need Soto to hit, I've said that before. That's the key to this whole thing is how well Soto swings the bat, and we'll leave it at that."

so you whine about offense, then put in an automatic out for 2 straight games, just because soto had a couple bad days? brilliant... especially considering soto hit the ball hard multiple times in his first 2 games.

this organization is run by [expletive] mongloids from top to bottom. if we aren't making the playoffs this season, i hope the season ends up more like 2006 than 2009. we need things to get ugly so they clean house.

i love how he has absolutely no patience with hitters or when pitchers like rich hill walk 2 guys in the first inning, but he CONSTANTLY sits in the bench and watches while relievers walk the building.

-walk

-walk

*makes angry hand gesture towards rothschild to go out to the mound*

-bunt

-walk

-3 run double on 2-0 pitch

*is shown looking furious and flabbergasted in the dugout*

Im not going to say I want to see Koyie Hill as a starter, but why does everyone keepo saying that Soto has only had 2 bad games and completely ignoring 2009 and spring training?

I dont agree with benching someone as punishment unless theres a better option, but Soto has had much more than 2 bad games. Unfortunately, between Robinson, Castillo, and Clevenger, we dont have a better option by any means, and I do think that Soto is the best option behind the plate, but it's not just 2 bad games.

And not to nitpick, but its really more OCD than ADD.

How is it OCD, exactly?

How is it ADD exactly?

ADD is when you have difficulty concentrating on whats going on and keep getting distracted.

OCD is when you have a certai type of tickm habit, or routine that you just cant stop doing, such as washing your hands over and over, going outside to make sure you turned off your headlights every few minutes, or always going with that righty/righty matchup even if your lefty is doing just fine.

so if you're going to go into the season with a player as your starter, why are you benching him after going 1-for-6 in 2 games??? if you have that little confidence in him then just don't have him around; give the job to a guy who's actually going to get a chance to build up some confidence.

Im not denying that Soto should be the everyday starter, and yes, he does need to build some confidence. Its just that a lot of people keep saying that Sotos had just 2 bad games, and thats really not the case.

This seems to be the start of the annual bad moves thread.

I believe the thread has been titled " Lou is a [expletive] idiot" part 1 and part 2 have been done. May as well re name this thread to that, because its just a matter of time before one gets started.

Hmmm Lou says Silvas shoulder stiffened up, Silva says it didnt and he felt fine. Same old [expletive] different season.

Silva pitched six innings of one-run, three hit ball, leaving with a 3-1 lead. He threw only 71 pitches and retired 11 of the last 12 hitters he faced. But Piniella pulled him in the seventh, reasoning that Silva's shoulder had stiffened up.

Silva said he felt fine.

"I was ready to go out (for the seventh)," Silva said. "They take me out."

I assumed Silva was being pulled because of some kind of injury related concern. I'm sure Silva did not want to come out of the game whether he had a stiff shoulder or not. So he says one thing, Lou says another.........whatever. My biggest issue was giving Caridad that much rope to hang himself. After the first two batters it should have been fairly obvious he did not have it at all. At that point I think Lou has to be ready to pull the guy at any moment and then the bases get loaded and he is still in the game. That is my biggest beef with the game tonight.

Now if Silva truly was just fine to keep pitching then yeah he should have stayed in the game. But Berg came in and sat the Reds down in the 7th so.......I just think if Lou manages the Caridad thing better in the 8th then the Cubs would have won.

This is where we miss Guzman. We really have no 8th inning guy (not that Guzman was proven or anything). Marshall should be moved there as he is the best we got but I'm not really convinced he would be great in that role. Our bullpen as of now has major Achilles heel with no real great solution.

He said Hill caught 2 games so Soto would be matched up with Zambrano and fresh.

He said he likes Hill's defensive skills.

He said Soto needs to hit.

I don't see the overreaction. Soto does need to hit. I'm not sure Hill is all that special defensively, but whatever.

Why does Soto need to hit but Hill doesnt? Hill isnt that much better defensively over Soto, and Soto's upside offensively is leaps and bounds better than Hills.

With that said, Hill will be our starting catcher by May 1. We are at the point Lou is making defensive changes in the 9th inning for Soto, for no real reason. Lou has lost all his confidence in Soto plain and simple.
