Z is Hilarious

Zambrano pitched five scoreless innings against the Clinton Lumberjacks, allowing four hits, striking out five and walking none. After throwing 76 pitches (54 strikes), he said his back was fine, then flexed his muscle to show he's not as lazy as people think.

He was particularly upset by a Carol Slezak column in the Sun-Times this week that included this message: ''If I were running the Cubs, I'd be looking for a way to make this lazy pitcher somebody else's problem.''

Zambrano's response: ''That lady that says I was lazy, I want to see her on Tuesday. I want to be with no shirt so that she can see my body, and she can see what type of body I have. If I'm lazy, lazy people don't have this body, so I'm going to show her my guns so that she can call me lazy again.

''I'm sorry, people get hurt. We are human, and we get hurt. ... We are not machines.''

Instead of the reporters standing there giggling like schoolgirls, maybe one of them should have brought up the fact that Z was the one who said he was lazy, not Slezak.

And for good measure, Z took batting practice.

I think the correct title of this thread should have been "Z is an idiot".

I tend to agree with Carol. When you are a $90M athlete, you do your exercise whether you want to or not. You go and get treatments whether you want to or not. And, oh yeah, you don't get carpol tunnel (sp?) from spending too much time texting your relatives. When you get paid that much money, you need to treat your profession seriously. I love watching Z when he's on his game, but I'm still waiting for him to take an entire season seriously and get more mentally tough out on the mound. If he does, then maybe he can live up to his self-predicted Cy Young award.

The days of him winning a Cy Young gut Dustied a while back. At this point, I just hope he is capable of being a high 3's, 180-200 IP guy for the remainder of his contract.

Because, yeah, these guys would NEVER, EVER do anything like that EVER.

Wait, who are "these guys"? I know it seems like multiple people live in Zambrano's head, but it's really only one.

What's more likely? That a major league player on the DL is out playing a pickup softball game, or that some sox fan thought it'd be entertaining to call in and make crap up on a sports radio show just to set Cubs fans into a tizzy?

It's possible...it's just not likely.

ESPN 1000 this morning had a caller call in and say Z was spotted playing a pickup softball game last night. While on the DL for a bad back. :banghead:

you know what's even crazier? i saw him pitch in a [expletive] minor league game while on the DL for a bad back. A MINOR LEAGUE GAME! GET YOUR HEAD ON STRAIGHT, ZAMBRANO.

Too lazy to pitch in the majors.

He has admitted that he plays softball in the offseason. But playing pickup softball while on the freakin DL for a bad back while your team that was supposed to win the World Series tanks into the crapper, just does not smell right at all. In the very best it shows total lack of good judgement. In the worst, it is a breach of his contract. But of course, it's all made up by those sneaky Sox fans.

Z is the best pitcher the Cubs have. Over the course of his time with the Cubs he has an ERA+ of 128 and WHIP of 1.29. It really bottles my mind to think that some of the idiot sports writers and fans want to get rid of him. It's the same way with Aramis.

If the Cubs only had 25 Theriots they'd be great!

It could easily be. These guys have clauses in their contracts that ban them from participating in all sorts of physical activities. Teams don't generally call them out on it, even if the activity leads to an injury, but it's in there.

softball? Sure, I've read some things about the various clauses in the standard MLBPA contract, but I've never seen anything that would suggest that pickup softball isn't allowed.

The magic word "waiver" comes to mind if he's done this stuff before and the Cubs never called him on it..
