Meh...we didn't give up much (though I agree that Ascanio could be good), but we didn't get much either, IMO. Feels more like a move-to-make-a-move to me, we shall see. Still very curious why Jackson was pulled from the Daytona game....more interested in that than this trade

Makes me wonder if we're getting a bat later. Although I have to admit, after watching the Cubs put up 24 runs in the last two games it seems kind of silly to want a bat.

It never hurts to have a stronger bench.

Especially with the injuries this team has had this year.

The Pirates would be wise to plop Ascanio - not Hart - into their starting rotation.

So either there's another trade in the works or else Jackson was pulled from his start for another reason.

Jackson was demoted today.

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Smokies, Class AA minor league affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, announce a series of roster moves Thursday. RHP Chris Carpenter has been promoted from High-A Daytona. In a corresponding roster move, RHP Jay Jackson has been sent to Daytona.

Carpenter was 6-4 with a 2.19 ERA in 20 games started between Daytona and Low-A Peoria. In 98.2 innings pitched, he allowed 30 runs (24 earned) on 70 hits, with 41 walks and 93 strikeouts. In five starts with Daytona, he posted a 2-1 record. He allowed seven runs (four earned) on 15 hits, walking eight and striking out 33. Carpenter was selected by the Cubs in the third round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft.

Jackson was 5-5 with a 3.70 ERA in 16 games started with Tennessee. I n 82.2 innings pitched he allowed 35 runs (34 earned) on 73 hits, walked 41 and struck out 93. Jackson was drafted by the Cubs organization in the ninth round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft.

That's probably the official word. Jackson twittered that he was getting demoted a couple days ago and he was on his way to Daytona (or wherever they were playing). I wonder if he got pulled form his start because it wasn't made official until today?

Actually he was demoted, since he went from AA to A ball. But yeah, I didn't know he was supposed to start after the roster move, so maybe something is in the works. Thanks for pointing that out.

I see absolutely zero justification for demoting Jackson in the first place; he was pitching very well for Tennessee.

100% agree. He wasn't tearing it up, but he was definitely doing a competent enough job to keep his spot.

Yeah, that's the cause for concern. TheLogan was the one who said that Jackson had been scratched from his start today for Daytona.

So where's JeffH.

Probably hiding in his cataclysm-proof bunker from the fallout from this historically bad trade.

In his defense at the time there were grumblings it was gonna be a deal involving Jackson for Grabow who the Pirates were asking top prospects form other organizations for.

Agreed. 2 of his past 3 starts were bad (3 of his last 5 too) but he's had a good season and overall, his last 10 games have been good: http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?pos=P&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=543351

True, but I'm pretty sure he would have said the same sort of thing regardless of who was in the rumors. The guy just has an irrational hatred of Jim Hendry, as well as the gift of hyperbole.

From Bruce's blog:

Grabow will join Sean Marshall in the pen to give the Cubs a 1-2 lefty punch. The 30-year-old Grabow makes $2.3 million this year, and he becomes a free agent in the fall. Gorzelanny began his big-league career with much promise, and Hendry said the Cubs believe he's throwing well again. Hendry said "absolutely" when asked if Gorzelanny figures in the Cubs' plans as a starting pitcher.

The Cubs also optioned pitcher Mitch Atkins to Iowa. Sam Fuld arrived in Chicago in time to jump on the charter for Florida. The Cubs will activate him before tomorrow night's game against the Marlins.

Apparently, there is no inclination to move Marshall to the rotation, but the Cubs will need a starter next Tuesday in Cincinnati. It could be Gorzelanny.

No reason to try defending him because it wouldnt have mattered what the grumblings were, he would have been here posting the same [expletive] like he always does. The Cubs suck, Hendry is dumb and sucks, etc... Hes a broken record

Hopefully, the left-handed White Sox fan from Oak Lawn will wind up helping the Cubs -- if not now, maybe next spring. :D

The 30-year-old Grabow is 3-0 with a 3.42 ERA (18 ER/47.1 IP) in 45 relief appearances for the Pirates this season. He has posted a 2.22 ERA (7 ER/28.1 IP) and a .184 batting average against (18-for-98) in his last 25 appearances during the last two-plus months starting May 24. He has not allowed a run in 22 of the 25 outings, including 11 consecutive scoreless outings from June 24-July 22, covering 12.0 innings pitched.

Seems to me that Grabow has been throwing the ball real well lately.
