So as it stands now, Grabow replaces Hart on the Active roster, with Gorzo going to AAA. Does Gorzo get called up when Hart's next scheduled start would take place (Tuesday, @CIN)?
That's what I'd expect. Stevens will probably go back to Iowa. They probably decided to do it this way for now since Gorzelanny won't be needed until Tuesday, so in the meantime they can carry the extra bullpen arm.

EDIT: Or else Samardzija may go down instead of Stevens so he can get stretched out as a starter again.

Marshall isnt going to the rotation from everything Ive read.

If they let Gorzelanny have a shot that's fine too, either way I think it means more opportunities for Marshall since Lou won't be afraid to use him with another LH option in the pen. As good a pitcher as Marshall is, that's a plus for the staff.

So where's JeffH?

I'm surprised and quite pleased that Hendry made a decent deal here.

Grabow was my last choice for LOOGY, but he's got a chance to be an asset. It will be even better if he winds up as a Type B free agent rather than Type A.

It's nice to add Gorzelanny. Do what you can to turn him into Ted Lilly. If that doesn't work out, you can try to make a LOOGY out of him.

Harrison seems like he has a little potential with the bat, but he really has no defensive position. Eric Pattersonish.

Hart and Ascanio were nice depth, but this kind of pitcher is the one thing that our farm system is good at producing.

Hart may stick as a no. 5 starter, but in my opinion, he was bound to implode at any moment. Ascanio was an interesting arm, but probably nothing more than an average reliever.

The reasons I really like this trade is that: (a) hopefully Marshall will now be allowed to pitch full innings, instead of relegated to the LOOGY role, and (b), Gorzellany has much, much more upside and potential than Kevin Hart.

With the team appearing to play up to their talent level as of late, I don't think we needed to ship off any legitimate prospects. This has the potential to at least slightly improve an already good ball club, both now and down the road.

ETA: Basically what TT said two posts above - guess I should have just done the +1 thing :)

Gorzelanny is on WGN. Says he's headed for Miami.

What????

Umm... The Cubs play the Marlins next in Miami...

Yeah, but it was reported he was starting out in AAA, maybe the Shark is also getting sent down?

yeah, but he's supposed to be reporting to Iowa

Gorzelanny up Shark down makes the most sense. As much as Marshall deserves the rotation spot, hes been too good in the pen, and will ultimately end up back there when Lillys back, so why mess with his routine. Shark should be in Iowa as a starter. He sucks as a reliever. Gorzelanny could be good for a few starts until Lilly comes back. Unless of course the plan all along has been to flip Gorz for something else all together.

Marshall in the rotation instead of the pen won't be the difference to get us into the playoffs, but Marshall in the pen will be a huge asset during the playoffs the way he's going. I agree with the call...don't screw with him for the rest of the year. Work him back into the rotation next spring.

I'm not sure of the exact rules, but if he's just going to Iowa til Tuesday when he'd start, wouldn't it make sense to have him go with the big league team and throw his side session in front of Rothschild rather than the AAA pitching coach? He travels with the team "on Iowa's roster" and gets activated on Tuesday.

This is going to go down as a historically bad trade

/JeffH

Obviously you like to exaggerate. There isn't a player involved in this deal that is going to amount to anything better than a 4th starter, a middle relief picher and a bench player. Hart, Ascanio, and Harrison didn't really figure into any Cubs' plans whereas Grabow & Gorzalanny could possibly help this year and in the future. In any case, Grabow will get us Type A compensation if we let him walk.

Fuld isnt in Iowas lineup again, so Im going to guess that both he and Gorz are called up with Atkins and Shark going down. Im thinking the wait on bringing up Fuld is due to them considering a last minute trade for another bat.

Fuld is on the team plane to Florida and Atkins is not. They just haven't made the move official yet.

And Gorz won't be officially called up until his 1st start. They aren't going to waste the chance to keep 8 relievers for a few days.

After reading the thread, this sounds like a decent deal.

The best part for me is that it sounds like, at the very least, Marshall will be saved from LOOGY duty, which is certainly a good thing.

Yeah, this is a slight improvement without really giving up anything important. Good move, and I like it. Even if we couldn't make a big move it's always fun to get some new players to cheer for isn't it?

I was just looking to see what number Grabow would wear and noticed he wore number 34 on the Pirates. Will the Cubs let him wear 34, and what would the fan reaction be if he were to do so?

Not an earth-shattering trade, but it gives us the potential to move some guys around (mostly Marshall) into roles in which they'll better serve us. And we didn't give up too much for it.

At worst, this trade is a wash. At best, it'll turn out to be decent.

The Cubs should let him wear 34 if he wants. Fans loved Kerry Wood, but its not like he did anything to deserve to have his number retired.
