I like Gorzelanny and think that overall it is a good trade for the Cubs. As previously mentioned, Grabow's best pitch is his change-up and is more similar to Remlinger than someone like Ohman. If they keep Gorzelanny in the pen, he could be like Ohman without the baggage. Gorzelanny has increased the velo back to where it was in '07 and has thrown the slider as much as he did that year compared to last year where his FB sat around 88 and threw way more change-ups than sliders. His change-up can flash avg. at times, but often stays up in the zone to RH'ers. Hopefully, they can keep Gorzelanny at Iowa and let him build up some stamina, cont. to show similar velo reading, sharp slider, and show me change to RHers to poss. compete for a spot next year as a starter. I think Gorzelanny would be a good pitcher to work with Rothschild given what he throws. Worst case scenario, I think he ends up as Ohman and Grabow ends up as a misused lefty specialist.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure every move Hendry has made since acquiring Harden has been awful.

The Kevin Gregg trade has not been awful.

Note: I've been in the car all afternoon so I don't know all of the details of this trade outside of the players, so correct me if I'm wrong on anything.

I don't really know how I feel about this trade. I'm not a big Hart fan, but he's been pitching well. I love Marshall out of the pen, so I really don't want to see him moved to the pen at this point. Grabow is ok but not great. Gorzelanny sucks. I don't feel like this move really improves us at all from where we were at.

Can't say this was a bad trade. Hart's value has never been higher and I've always been suspicious of his control. Ascanio flashed some good stuff and had some upside, but he's always been inconsistent. Harrison is an eh prospect who'll probably be a utilityman down the line.

Grabow and Gorzelanny are not a great haul, but honestly, the Cubs didn't give up much.

Now that the smoke has cleared, while I dont feel that this is the type of trade that will make us curse Jim Hendrys name for years to come, it does seem like the Pirates get the better end of the deal. They get a back of the rotation starter who will keep his team in the game for the most part, a potentially dominant reliever who could possibly be a closer 1 day, and whatever Harrison turns out to be. We get a loogy and a guy who may or may not ever make it back to the big leagues, but I guess time will tell. Im just relieved that we didnt give up Jackson or even Fox. Edited by Little Slide Rooter

It depends on how Gorzelanny works out. I've always like him, but it depends on how he performs and I don't know that it will help improve this years team, so I don't really get the deal.

This is what I was hoping to hear. Gorzelanny is a guy whose MLB numbers should've been better given his minor league history, and hearing that his velocity/stuff is where it was during his best season(also the only season he showed some of the control he had in the minors) is encouraging as well. I like him very much as rotation depth going forward.

Grabow when looking beyond a small sample seems to be reasonably effective against LH hitters, which is all I really need since Marshall will be upgrading the rotation and the rest of our pen is good enough to face all but the most platoony LH hitters. Grabow is also on track to be Type A, although he makes a bit too much to possibly risk getting stuck with him in arbitration.

Marshall isnt going to the rotation from everything Ive read.

Why does Hendry like Gorzelanny better than Marshall for the rotation? I'm afraid all this is going to do is continue to allow Lou to misuse Marshall.

Marshall has been terrific in the pen.. how exactly is Lou misusing him?

It actually sounds like this trade will allow Lou to use Marshall more in his appearances (for 1-2 innings at a time for instance) since he'll still have Grabow as the LOOGY. I'd prefer Marshall in the rotation, but Gorzelanny intrigues me.

By using him to face 1 batter, and then removing him from the game. Although getting Grabow should eliminate that trend.

He can be effective against more than just lefties and can be more of an asset to the team pitching a full inning or two.

With Lilly due back in a couple weeks Gorz or Marshall to the rotation seems a bit like a moot point since either one is going to lose that spot after a 2 or 3 starts anyway. Probably just as soon let Marshall stay in the pen where he has been very effective. Since he is no longer the only lefty Lou will actually use him for extended outings instead of for partial innings so with him, Guzman, Marmol and Gregg the Cubs will be in good shape closing out games. Wonder what this means for BJ Ryan since I doubt the Cubs would want to go to three LH relievers in the pen.

I like this trade well enough. Grabow's 3-year splits show him as a pretty good LOOGY and Gorzelanny has some good stuff with the potential to be a decent back of the rotation starter for moderately cheap.

As for who we gave up, Ascanio is the only player who likely will become an impact player and even that is iffy. Ascanio's upside is probably a very good setup man.

So as it stands now, Grabow replaces Hart on the Active roster, with Gorzo going to AAA. Does Gorzo get called up when Hart's next scheduled start would take place (Tuesday, @CIN)?

Huh, I think I like this trade.

Grabow is fine, but could have ulterior benefits if it "frees" up Marshall to pitch more than just as a LOOGY. Gorzelanny is intriguing, easily moreso than Hart in my opinion.

I'm guessing part of the reason this trade was made was that Ryan topped out at 87 when he made his Iowa debut.
