  1. While this doesn't apply to 2013, I think Wainwright is a FA after next season. He'll command big bucks and may price himself out of St. Louis. Maybe save some bucks for next offseason.
  2. Not important, but. . . Assuming we re-sign Kerry Wood, one uni should say "T WOOD" on the back and Kerry's should just say "WOOD." Merry Christmas!
  3. Tribune headline: Fourteen years for Blagojevich. LATimes headline: Ten years for Pujols The Cards lucked out on this one.
  4. Because of the way last night's game ended, it looks like Philly might need a first baseman next year. A one-year or two-year deal for Carlos Pena would seem to work. And if I were him, wouldn't it be better to play for a real contender than for a team like the Cubs, rebuilding on the fly? Of course, after Prince leaves Milwaukee, they'll be interested in him, as well. I'm not sure we should pursue Pena anyway, but if we were interested, this just makes it more costly. Bryan LaHair anyone?
  5. If Hendry is retained, I guess this is the best possible alternative. However, if Hendry stays, I'm not so sure that Quade will be dismissed.
  6. Agreed, but it is far from a dump IMO. From the player's perspective, it's a dump There was some talk about digging deep under the playing surface to construct batting cages, larger weight rooms, etc. Aside from the structural problems that need to be investigated, I think they'll find that Wrigley is built on top of an ancient burial ground and there will be tons of lawsuits to halt the desecration of the burial grounds. This will take years to get through the courts and, aside from that, people will say that these burial grounds are the reason the Cubs have never won at Wrigley. There's a mini-series (for tv, not the baseball postseason) in there somewhere. But I digress. . .
  7. President David Palmer! Copy that!
  8. Just the first one. I'm waiting on three more. This was the easiest year to get in, but, like most everyone else, I kept getting the "busy signal" and had to keep resending. Oh, well. ________________________________ Sandberg>Mazeroski>Morgan
  9. The guy must love God. I can understand giving up a wife and kids to be a priest, but baseball -- this is serious stuff. ___________________________________ Sandberg>Mazeroski>Morgan
  10. In case you haven't seen it, there's a pretty funny youtube entry at Less than a month 'til pitchers and catchers report. _____________________________________ Sandberg>Mazeroski>Morgan
  11. Maybe he should consider transferring his kids to schools in another city. _____________________________________ Sandberg>Mazeroski>Morgan
  12. If the Cubs don't make it to the Series, I hope it's the Rockies vs. the Twins, so that we can watch a world series as it's meant to be played, in 20+ degree weather and snow flurries. _________________________________ Sandberg>Mazeroski>Morgan
  13. Even with all the upgrades -- which have helped Comiskey II tremendously -- it's still not a really enjoyable place to view a game. Behind the seats -- i.e., the concourse -- it's much better than Wrigley, but even with the posts, the views are much better at Wrigley (players don't look like ants from the upper deck). Close down Wrigley for two seasons, playing at Comiskey II, and rebuild the concourse. While they're at it, they need to add batting cages, workout areas, etc., somewhere, but I don't know where that would be. Hopefully, that's where Janet Marie Smith can add value. _________________________________________ Sandberg>Mazeroski>Morgan

  17. . . . so that Cubs players could turn around and look towards the outfield -- at the jumbotron -- as they return to the dugout after striking out, just like players do at just about every other park. Yeah, the rooftop idea might work. _________________________________________________ Sandberg>Mazeroski>Morgan
  18. Hopefully, the left-handed White Sox fan from Oak Lawn will wind up helping the Cubs -- if not now, maybe next spring. :D ________________________________________ Sandberg>Mazeroski>Morgan
  19. I could not find the complete text of Maddux's speech as #31 was retired in Atlanta yesterday, but in what I did read, I could see no mention of 'how great the fans in Atlanta' were or 'what a great place Atlanta is' in which to play. Anybody else see/hear him mention those topics or did he reserve those comments for the years he spent at Wrigley? ________________________________________ Sandberg>Mazeroski>Morgan
  20. Cub fans are stupid because they go to see a bad team play, sez Ozzie. I guess that means he thinks White Sox season ticket holders are stupid, as well, since their team -- in spite of their last seven or eight games -- is pretty bad. I tell ya, that Ozzie makes me wanna puke! Oh, sorry, that's been used for Wrigley. . . _______________________________________________________ Sandberg>Mazeroski>Morgan

  22. I recall a story a few years ago about a third baseman who was a minor league/Japanese League lifer and got an invitation to Cubs camp at age 31 or 32. He and his wife had squirreled away every dollar they could and had managed to save almost $2 million. At that point, he had been invited to a few camps and had a better chance of making the cut with one of the other teams. However, he had always wanted to play for the Cubs and, with the money in the bank, lived his fantasy -- at least for spring training. While I don't remember his name, I recall that he was a pleasant person and a good story for the papers. I don't think it was Casey McGehee, but his name was similar to that. Does anyone remember this guy? __________________________________________________________ Sandberg>Mazeroski>Morgan
  23. Yeah, instead of looking for another site on which to dump the Nats, just contract 'em and, to even out the numbers, another team, like the Marlins. Or, if Selig wants to keep the fish, another team could be off'd, like, uh, I don't know. . . the Cardinals?' ____________________________________________________________________ Sandberg>Mazeroski>Morgan
  24. A cool illusion. I guess this proves that Chico Esquella's advice was correct: "Keep your eyes on de ball." (He, of course, also said that "baseball bin berry berry good to me." ______________________________________________________________ Sandberg>Mazeroski>Morgan
  25. Luke, Nice pic of the old fart with his Pall Malls. __________________________________________ Sandberg>Mazeroski>Morgan
